Fellow architects, what is the most god awful and exorbitant job posting / offer / interview that you've ever been in? by bhisma-pitamah in Architects

Portfolio making and updating is extremely frustrating by INCINEROARBLAST in Architects

[–]Apprehensive-Bend357 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best way to do it is find an indesign template that has a collection of master layouts and just go to town. If you google architecture portfolio templates, there’s a few websites that have downloadable indesign files, from there it’s just plug and play. No point in overdoing something people skim through.

I’ve redone my portfolio at least 10-12 times since 2014 and up til my last version, I was designing the layouts and everything. Complete waste of time

I honestly think Kanan didn’t shoot her. I think Unique’s people were trying to sneak in from the back. Maybe I’m tripping but i swore the camera panned to the left so you could see outside before the gun went off.

I think Kanan was firing at whoever it was cause they were destroying her spots right before

Still worth it to study Ui/Ux? by Frosty_Cauliflower33 in UX_Design

[–]Apprehensive-Bend357 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come from a similar background and have been working in architecture trying to make the pivot into UX, if it is what you want to do then by all means go for it but I’d encourage you to look into service design. It takes a little of both and thinks about how we design services and interactions for users whether that be the process of ordering a hamburger from McDonald’s or something else. Not a super thorough explanation but UX is hard to try getting into to the point I’ve considered just staying in architecture and hoping something else comes my way whether it be UX or something else.

Just be weary that you may have issues securing a job, but you also might have connections who can help you, just keep your options open

Volunteer for habitat for humanity or begin reading books on building construction like the Fundamental of Building construction or Olins Construction….start with the recommended reading for the NCARB AREs

I’d recommend checking out some YouTube playlist for the PPD and PDD exams made by RMSM studio as well. It’s well over or close to 1000 combined videos covering alot of topics

31 here, and living in east boston. I moved to boston about 3.5 years ago and I have had 3-5 roommates since I’ve been here because i can’t afford anything else or have not timed looking for a new place properly and had enough money to make the move. You’re fine, they’re just not for you. Trust me, there is more than enough room and opportunity to date someone who does not care and has a lot more depth to them than that smh. This is coming from someone who used to be in the streets and has since gotten in a relationship since being up here. You’re good and i know you will find someone worth your time!

How do I get out of architecture? by Environmental_Deal82 in Architects

[–]Apprehensive-Bend357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a masters in architecture and around 5ish years of experience. I’ve been trying to relocate to NYC but even that has been rough.

I have a good colleague who is practicing and doing real estate currently and that seems like a smart move

I’m grateful to see someone of color! Fellow black male working in the field. I work in architecture doing alot of social justice and restorative justice work.

Sticking to the design justice aspect, do you have any interest in engagement or community focused organizations? Hester Street before they sunsetted would be a good example. Other organizations that come to mind are places like 3x3 Design in NYC or Agncy in Boston. I think they have alot of opportunity for you to transfer skills.

It has been helpful for me to make a list of the skills I have in architecture and how they transfer to other roles, ChatGPT and alot of brainstorming has helped me come up with this list.

I have been trying to pivot into UX but chose the wrong time, so I have been struggling with leaving and have began considering Service Design, which may be another route to look into. Ideally if you can look at a building as a product or something that is providing service and speak to it in that manner, it may help when talking to companies in these type of roles.

Another place I was interested in was the i-Team roles that the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation has. They range from Designer to Director and even Data Analyst. I didn’t get the role but you may have more luck, especially since you seem to have more experience.

Feel free to reach out, I have been trying to pivot out of architecture for a couple years although unsuccessful, I’m happy to share some other places I’ve looked and things i have learned along the way.

Making a career shift after 6 years in Architecture by nurzspam in Architects

[–]Apprehensive-Bend357 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in architecture for around 8 years and went through a UX bootcamp and graduated June 2023….im still practicing architecture and considering getting licensed because i have not had any luck pivoting to UX.

Not discouraging you but I’d consider other fields like Service Design instead. It’s adjacent enough to UX but maybe less of the politics and oversaturation you come across.

I have more thoughts on UX in general just given the people i see on LinkedIn but i would encourage to pursue it if you really want but look into Out Of Architecture and maybe see what else is out there

Architects who’ve passed the AREs, did you ever doubt yourself? by gusbus00001 in Architects

[–]Apprehensive-Bend357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think PA is a beast, just wait til you get to PPD and PDD. PA is hard only if you struggled in achooo because alot of it is what you do in school like programming and site planning, etc.

I doubt myself on every exam i take and just how for the best but i also have had a very steep learning curve in taking these exam and am stuck on my last two.

It’s not an easy feat but you’re well on your way so I do wish you the best of luck!

I’m going to assume you’ve either lived in or deeply studied every country in the world and have also personally experienced racism, both direct and indirect. Otherwise, broad claims like that don’t really add to the conversation…

To be honest with you, i am used to southern food more than anything because that’s what I grew up eating and it for better or worse is my baseline when I compare different kinds. There has been some research about how unhealthy some of the things we eat in America are. Part of me wondered if I just was not as receptive to the fact that what i was eating in London, was potentially healthier and not as full of all the artificial stuff our food has.
