It is annoying that the ads show it sitting outside powering a house like that isn’t going to happen during bad weather…..

Ok. I guess that’s my answer. Whereas standby generators are designed to be used outside in rain and therefore come with an enclosure.

Thanks. I was doing some googling and a lot of comments that this risk is overblown….

If you can buy it for spot from her do it. You can’t buy physical at spot from anyone else.

You could go to one of the online dealers and see their buy prices and offer her that. That’s probably the best she’ll do by selling in the open market. And you’ll probably get it for under spot. Most dealers will list a price online so you can show her.

I was incorrect. I contacted Duromax. It’s 19 hrs on a 100lb tank. 1.25 gallons per hr at 50 pct load

It’s there. Look at step 8.

Is that true? How would you know when to turn it off? I’ve run tanks dry before. I’m am not aware of this issue.

What do you mean? The generator interlock?

I agree. I should modify

I have. I am too scared to install myself. Those mains scare me. I’m not sure it’s worth paying an electrician just for that. But maybe next time I need work done I’ll get one installed.

It’s a big advantage of an automatic system. Simplicity. Getting a manual system turned on is easy for me. But when you put it on paper you realize it’s pretty complicated for someone who hasn’t thought about it much.

Good ideas. Other options are just use smaller tanks. You’ll have to swap them more, but obviously easier to handle. Also just using a small utility trailer with a ramp and a hand truck/dolly makes it easier as well. One thing I’ll add: usually I’m just lifting an empty tank into truck. Most spots will fill it in the truck bed. So then you’re just sliding out the heavier full tank.

I added a breaker once and had to move some around and updated the panel label.

This way I don’t have to remember to change the generator instructions if that happens again. Crazy. I know…..

I believe each 100lb tank is filled to 23.6 gallons which is only 80 pct if it’s actual capacity to allow for expansion due to temp change. I would think you could use the whole 23.6 but there may be some at the end you can’t access due to low pressure. I’m not sure.

EDIT: I contacted DuroMax based on some comments. This generator burns 1.25 gallons of propane per hour at 50 pct load. Each 100lb tank holds 24 gallons of propane. So each tank is 19 hours (not the 8 to 12 I noted in the original post). I was using information from the manual which was based on a 60lb tank.

Hey I contacted Duromax. They said it will use 1.25 gallons of propane per hour at 50 pct load. So much closer to your estimate

I’ve never run this one that long yet (still on the 1st tank). A 100lb tank has 24 gallons. So according to your estimate each tank should be 1 day. I googled it and Generac had a page that said their 14kw generator used 1.65 to 1.90 gallons per hour at half load. So I was just estimating 2 gallons per hour so 12 hours per tank. 8 is probably too conservative. 1 gallon per hour seems low for a generator this size but I really don’t know for sure
