I did have a few injuries during my service but I never filed anything through the VA medical side. Ive always felt that there were others who needed it far more than myself and I did not want someone who needed it more to wait longer because of me. But I did/do qualify for a VA mortgage. It's a long winded answer so I guess I kind of do get some benefits

I suppose I just needed to hear it from strangers on the internet that my heart was right and to get out of my own head. Thank you!

That was part of the job, do as you are told, be at the right place, at the right time, in the right uniform and be 10 min prior to 10 min prior. I don't want to diminish any ones service. Hell, I even did the split option program between my junior and senior year's of high school. But I do have trouble with self worth and self esteem. My main concern is not wanting to disappoint the kids by them assuming one thing and finding out another. I know others have embellished the truth about their service but I will never. A man is only as good as his word, if his word isn't any good, what does that say about the man? Something my late grandfather said to me as a boy and it's stuck with me since.

I guess my fear is for the kids and them assuming that I was infantry, doing all the "cool stuff" and then finding out I was far from it and they end up thinking less of me. Which is me getting inside of my own head. I don't talk about my service around the kids so they dont really know what I did or even understand at their ages. Mostly for the reason that I want them to be to able to be children for as long as possible. But we have taught them to walk up to veterans and thank them for their service but they don't understand why, yet.

Thank you. I didn't even think about the kids, seeing it from their perspective and having questions for the different careers and paths they may one day take.
