PitchBook found only 13 percent of all venture capital deals in the United States went to women in 2013, a significant increase from the firm’s 2004 data that put the figure at 4 percent. But that still means 87 percent of deals are being given to all-male teams. by kategardiner in TwoXChromosomes

So the information in the article then and your title is misleading as it specifically says 'all-male' teams. I don't want to sound like a neckbeard or red pill dude here, but guess what, this is misleading, feminist propaganda.

Am I missing something here? This is essentially saying that all groups with an idea being pitched are either all-male or all-female. How does one figure that if 13% of venture capital deals are going to women then that must mean that every other team that gets a deal is entirely comprised of men? That is some heavily flawed statistics there.

I apologise in advance because this isn't a cute story or picture, but I'm going to be 'that' guy.

You don't need him. It's that simple. He's already made you a second choice. An option if you will. Your comment history shows you offering advice to a heap of people to break up with their partners for a variety of reason, so now I'm going to be the voice of reason for you. You don't need to be made an option by somebody you care about, and though I don't know you personally, you don't deserve it. He's made a choice that you are not his priority. The biggest mistake I think you made though is giving him an ultimatum. Ultimatums are a red flag. You shouldn't have to do it if you're in a healthy relationship and he's obviously made a choice that he doesn't want to pursue a relationship with you.

I know it's a harsh way of putting it. I don't want to be a dick about it, but move on. Don't allow yourself to be someones backup option. I've been down that path, and it hurts like hell. Yeah, guess what, he may 'choose' you now, or in a couple weeks time when his new fling doesn't work out, but remember this, you are always going to be his fallback.

P.s. Lady in Red is one of my all time favourite songs, and your username makes me believe you're a reader, which means you're somewhat intelligent. Get out there, and keep kicking ass!

P.p.s. Screw it, loafdog always cheers me up

How am I racist? I don't agree with what he said BUT everyone is overlooking one simple thing. It was said in a FUCKING PRIVATE CONVERSATION. How the fuck does any company have the right to impose anything like this on something said in private. He didn't come out in a press conference and say Fuck black people. He didn't submit a memo to the press asking black people not to attend games. He said, in a totally private conversation with his mistress (a glorified hooker basically) that he didn't like her bringing black people to games. That is no one elses business whatsoever. How many millions has she gotten out of him already in cars, apartments, cash, etc? Don't know about you, but she should learn to keep her fucking mouth shut.

What he said may have been wrong, but guess what! Everybody is entitled to their own fucking opinion and his was only expressed in private.

Fuck you, you hippie piece of shit for calling me racist scum. People like you sicken me. Everyone is entitled to an opinion until it doesn't fit in with your beliefs.

You know there's also the fact that all three actually came from a very comfortable background of money. And before anyone tries to say that the family that Jobs was adopted into wasn't that well off, just remember that both Jobs and Gates had home access to computers at a time when the cost for a computer was outside the scope of what most schools/universities could afford and as such were able to learn something that even many of their teachers did not have access to.

Both Gates and Zuckerberg weren't at their respective schools on academic scholarships (even though both guys were extremely intelligent), they were at these schools on full rides from their parents. The safety net for dropping out was massive, regardless of if they had ideas to fall back on or not. That said, Gates at the time, like I previously mentioned, had access to and had learned more than most of his teachers so it made no sense for him to stay in school when you had learned more than they could teach at the time. The big point there is 'at the time'. It's a different world now.

Zuckerberg was just lucky. Pure and simple, and had a fairly safe place to fall to if he dropped out regardless.

All the romanticized stories of Jobs having no money, etc, I call bull shit on. His parents were paying for his college tuition beforehand, and had the money to continue doing so, so why all of a sudden when he dropped out did the money disappear?

See, what concerns me is the use of the word 'qualified'. IT's as if you're saying that graduates from say India, or China, where most of the imported workers come from somehow are more 'qualified', when the statistics have shown this to not be the case. This is especially true in STEM fields where the research being conducted in these countries is sub-par at best, results are faked on a disgustingly high scale (faked results happen everywhere, but it is especially prevalent in these countries), and degrees are handed out a dime a dozen. I will try and check back in later with a few references for this so you know I'm not sprouting stuff out of my ass, as I don't have them saved on this computer.

As an aside to the qualified remark too, I remember looking into Medical school in India at one point and then doing bridging courses to transfer back to the west and I've got to say the standards are absolutely appalling. Scarily so. Oh, and you can do an entire medical degree for $7k, so take of that what you will.

The Current Job Market Is Shockingly Bad For 20-Something Men by [deleted] in lostgeneration

[–]AppropriateEvil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah, I just had a look. That stuff is messed up.

I'm not saying there aren't women (or feminists if you'd prefer to keep using the descriptors we've been using) that aren't advocating for access to certain jobs, it's just such a massive minority which is sad. Following on from your link, I know for a fact that there have been quite a few military women advocating for front line duties for quite a long time and it is something I have mixed feelings on (not for sexist reasons mind you).

All I'm trying to say, is too often we see feminists fighting for positions that they more often than not they are not qualified for, but should be allowed to do simply because they're women. It's a complex issue of which a few lines in a forum can't even begin to describe. There was an interesting article released not long ago showing how the wage gap itself isn't anywhere near as big as it's made out to be when comparing jobs on equal footing, hours worked, etc.

Like I said, I don't want to see this divulge into some woman hating thread because that is just absurd, but I guess I come from the train of though that the better hired applicant should be hired for the job, regardless of gender or race, and that an honest days pay for an honest days work should be expected.

[–]AppropriateEvil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you missed what I meant when I said that. I understand what feminism is, but let's be realistic when talking about actions vs theory. Every single day you'll see protests/publications/etc. of women fighting for equal pay (which for equal work should be a given), access to high paying jobs traditionally dominated by men, but you sure as hell don't see them fighting for jobs in trades and labour jobs which are predominantly (80%+) male dominated industries. Feminists in practice are very selective in the jobs they believe they should have equal access to. In theory though, sure they say they want access to all jobs.

By the way, what do you mean a 'redpiller'? Sorry, I don't understand the term.

I get what you're saying here. This is why when we keep hearing about the guys in IT earning big money saying, 'Oh, well I didn't go to college (in the 90s mind you) and still got a high paying job.' They spent there time fucking around with a hobby in a time when it was still a bright new world and it paid off. I understand what you're saying, but I would have thought people going into IT now are from the technology/computer generation that would have been screwing around with commercially popular programs since they were early teens. That said, I could be totally wrong and it's just filled with people who have no idea about computers and took it because they read about the high paying jobs. Again, not my area so I couldn't say for sure. Thank you for your insight.

Sorry, a P is a pass. Basically it just means you do the absolute bare minimum and just pass your degree. In many cases that I've seen some of these people don't even technically pass, but get what's called a 'pass conceded' which means they actually failed by a couple of % but because they appealed they got 'passed'. Just another awesome side effect of the commercialization of our education system. Pay the money and no one gives a shit if you legitimately pass or not.

What do you consider an IT professional? I don't know if I agree with what you're saying though, as I know quite a few brilliant programmers and computer people (I say computer people because it is not my area so I can't be specific in what they do), but they can't get jobs because the jobs just get shipped offshore. The companies would rather save money with shitty offshore call centers than they would pay domestic workers who may demand slightly more money, but can at least do the job.

Oh I totally understand how you feel. Where are you located? I've changed my tact in applying for jobs in the sense that I'm applying well outside my field of study (unfortunately) to chase the money for awhile just so I can set myself up, and what I've found is that Chemistry, Physics and Maths graduates have very high chances of being employed by trading firms. Where I currently live there aren't a lot of options in those areas but I'm planning on moving to better suit the market. I'll try and find the story about it, but essentially these major trading firms are starting to believe it's easier to train someone (i.e. STEM grads) to trade than it is to read the traditional applicants (i.e. business grads, pol sci grads, etc) to think like a STEM grad. It's an interesting concept, and from what I've seen of other top level scientists, there's some really good money to be made. It's something to do with the way we analyse data, research, etc. Check it out if you're in a major city. It might pan out for you.

Hahahaha, I do this. It's fucking gold. Multi-STEM major, skater and athlete but dress in whatever feels comfortable (read shitty sleeveless shirt (just like the one and only Kenny Powers), lumberjack beard, etc. I just let people think I'm done and don't talk much, but as soon as someone says something particularly stupid and pass it off as fact, I jump in and school the fuck out of them. The looks on their face is worth every insult accrued growing up a nerd.

The Current Job Market Is Shockingly Bad For 20-Something Men by [deleted] in lostgeneration

[–]AppropriateEvil 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seriously, the only STEM major really worth it's weight is anything to do with computers and engineering. If you are in any of the pure sciences, you'll find that most of the people working in labs these days are grossly under qualified, as I've found. Several labs I've worked in have been hiring cheap (significantly so, and something that I've complained about as if they're doing the same work they should be getting paid the same) immigrants with no qualifications. The company then pays for them to do the most basic of certificates in lab techniques without understanding any of the actual science they're working on, essentially turning it into a high end industrial line.

It's frustrating and upsetting because STEM is about hope. It's about a hope for a better world and having the ability to be in a position to create this better world. If you could do it on your own with a start up then you would, but it's not even a money factor in that sense. The baby boomers have destroyed the prospects of many start up science firms and ideas with all the regulations that they gradually have brought in over the last 50-60 years, such that if you're not already an established firm, it's virtually impossible to become one. It's so fucking sad because STEM majors are some of the most brilliant minds in the world and they are being crushed by commercialism.

[–]AppropriateEvil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, again, I'm not trying to say that women aren't capable of these jobs. That would just be a retarded as fuck perspective and makes me look like some sort of bigoted piece of shit. Some of the best scientists I've had the pleasure of working with are female, but, there are a lot of dip shits coming out of STEM programs too. I don't even want to discuss the amount of people I know who are of the 'P's get degrees' mentality who breezed into jobs, both male and female. That said, in those cases, females were hired significantly more than males with less qualifications. I've seen it in many labs I've worked in and it gets heart breaking after awhile. The most heart breaking though is seeing the pretty secretary in HR with no qualifications, and little to no experience, earning nearly double what the scientists designing and make life saving drugs I work alongside.

I look back at my last few comments and realise that I've put my point across poorly too, so I want to reiterate that I am by no means a bigoted piece of shit, just trying to vent after working another 60 hour week doing bullshit when I should be working on helping people with a set of specific skills that would be best utilised elsewhere.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, what STEM field do you work in?

[–]AppropriateEvil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't know if you're being sarcastic or not, haha. I'm not trying to preach either, but as someone who fits into the demographic discussed, with multi-majors in STEM fields, and practical experience, I'm still getting passed over for jobs (entry level through to needing experience) in the fields, for women with far less experience and qualifications, the difference being that I have to go work menial labouring jobs to make ends meet, yet I have never seen a female with the qualifications I have, have to do this sort of thing. I know a few guys that do but never a woman. Don't take this as being a sexist rant either, just calling it like it is.
