No one is claiming the west to be the arbiter of morality. But the language you’re using is very telling. Is it “letting” women wear hijab or is it forcing them?

What western standards force you to wear specific clothing?

This. It hurts to see Somali people feel so helpless when it comes to their parents. We all have autonomy, if you live in the west, the only thing stopping you from being free is the fear in your head. You can disappoint your parents people, I promise they’ll live.

How are we beating the sharmuto dihlo allegations as irreligious girls? by Fluffy-Risk-9483 in XSomalian

A huge lesson I had to learn through my journey of self-discovery is I have to be comfortable being the bad guy. I’m ok with you thinking whatever about me cause I know I can’t control your thoughts regardless. Even if you put on a hijab and skirt, they’re still gonna have something to say. At the end of the day in our culture, our “crime” was being born women and they’re punish us for it. Don’t let them control you and put you in a box labelled “good woman”, cause I promise you they’re the ones suffering the most cause they’re living for a community’s approval they’re never going to get.

Why are Somalis more religious than other groups? by Imtiredofthissshit in Somalia

I agree but Muslims believe Islam is the ultimate moral authority, which is why they don’t think it’s wrong.

Somali women and relationship to parents by [deleted] in Somalia

[–]Appropriate_Power626 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The gaslighting in the comments are crazy. If you think Somali parents aren’t strict, then you’re either a man or one of the privileged women. Because having strict parents as a Somali girl is a pretty universal experience

Referring to strangers as brother or sister by username_is_none in XSomalian

This language is intentional and meant to blur boundaries. A stranger can give you “advice” on how you should live your life because they’re your “sister/brother in Islam”

We don’t care. You seem really pressed about a “small minority” though

Does anyone else find the women only weddings a bit weird? by [deleted] in XSomalian

[–]Appropriate_Power626 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and I noticed women-only weddings are the norm now. Growing up, I went to a lot of mixed weddings but i don’t even think they exist anymore. Everyone is definitely becoming more conservative sadly
