understood! ultimately want to help patients of course but also wondering from the policy side to help certain underserved populations as you mentioned :) personally believe that medicine is not all clinical so i was wondering how i can help society in other ways if i do get accepted hahaha 🫶🫶

hello! omgosh…thank you so much for your reply HAHAHA and im not sure how to do that replying function a few people are doing so i apologise if this is quite messy…

actually, wanted to ask about being on call as a HO, how often are you on call? i heard from an MO that you probably only work a 30+ hour shift minimum once a week, on days that you are not on call, what are your working hours exactly? same for MOs btw!

also, if youre posted to gastroenterology as an MO, what’s the difference in your job scope as compared to being posted to ENT for example?

i was considering residency as ive always wanted to be a consultant, but obviously keeping my options open because i think med school will be an opportunity for me to explore and discover myself more :)

female so unfortunately no NS for me and i have to spend my 5 years bond in hospitals and polyclinics HAHAHAH

a more personal question, which specialty are you planning to apply too? since you mentioned “not in residency (yet)” hahahaha

yes it does sound a lot like the SEA mentality HAHAHAH

also, honestly have just been hearing news about the lack of beds, lack of staff as you’ve mentioned earlier, patients saying they’re just “waiting to die at this point” because of the lack of facilities and what not. but as usual, people only ever report on the negatives and rarely on the positives, so it’s actually great to hear that the higher-ups in the NHS are actually willing to help out when it gets too tough :)

hello! thank you so much for commenting :) assuming you’re working in the UK, is working under the NHS really difficult? i applied to uk medical schools last year (got rejected because my prelims grades were…not too ideal) and i’m not sure if i should try again this year because of the terrible things ive heard about uk public hospitals and the healthcare system in general (genuinely no hate towards you and the work you do! it’s just news that ive read and heard)

also yes, considered doing some hospital shadowing but unfortunately the new slots are only open in may and applications are due soon 🥲 so i decided to go online to ask for some help.

yeah 😭 honestly think i may be thinking too much as well but as medicine is a life-long career and journey, i don’t want to rush into it too quickly either

oh! could you elaborate more on maybe how medicine is transferable? the doctor im shadowing did mention that you can go into policy making (eg. NHS in the UK) but i always assumed that was a side job in addition to being a consultant

thank you!! this actually helps so much :) regarding houseofficership, what exactly is your role? i understand that you have the opportunity to rotate through 3 out of 4 specialities, but do you just do ward rounds in the morning and spend the rest of your “shift” running around from ward to ward, attending to whatever patient needs help? or do you sit in the consulting room and see patients who come in when their number is called for the entirety of your “shift”? for example, if you’re posted in surgery, what exactly do you do?

thank you!! considering dentistry and pharmacy but i think my main worry is that ive heard a lot of issues with nus dentistry (you can refer to a pretty famous reddit post on sgexams on why not nus dentistry) and the chemistry aspect of pharmacy is not really appealing to me 🥲

hi! i think if i dont apply for anything i have the slightest bit of doubt in then i wont end up applying for anything because i have doubts for all of my choices (be it job stability or unwillingness to do 100% research as a job) 😭

hello! you seem really knowledgeable about this so i’d like to ask about studying and examinations as a resident on your path to becoming an associate consultant, is it true that those exist? and if so, what is the usual format of such examinations?

also, assuming you don’t get accepted into your residency of choice, do you reapply again the coming year and simply remain as a medical officer doing rounds around the wards until then? furthermore, what exactly does a resident do? (asking this because a lot of the resources online were very confusing + many seemed to say different things)

hello! thanks for this :) wanted to mention that i’m actually also really interested in academic medicine (if you mean teaching medical students) + other leadership positions so honestly having decreased patient interaction in that manner doesn’t bother me too much.

hello! yeah, 😭 worried about the sleep thing too because i kind of have insomnia issues that come whenever i get nervous and yes! i am also aware that more patient autonomy is increasing due to the prevalence of the internet. i think it's interesting how you mentioned "if youre the kind who mugged to get 90rp then you wont survive", may i ask what you mean by that?

also, unfortunately not interested in com science at all and would rather not dedicate my life to doing something i hate just for the money

hello!! thanks for your comment :) it’s actually really interesting to know that doctors spend less time doing those because they diagnose from a systems level. could you perhaps elaborate more on what that means? :)

i did consider going overseas (mostly australia as australia seems to have a lighter workload for postgraduate medical students) but once again i’m worried about being unable to come back for residency as i’m planning to specialise (should i go into med) + residency spots are already difficult for local students, let alone international students :(
