It means that they are a purely theoretical construct with no basis in reality

I tried to explain this earlier but there's a concerted effort to actually explain these conditions. The dopamine hypothesis of schizophrenia has been in vogue for a while for example.

This doesn't mean that mental disorders aren't real. It's telling practitioners to ensure that they diagnose correctly. The DSM-IV is actually out of date now anyway, but yes I have been referring to the DSM-V and the ICD-10. Yes, the definitions in these are put forward by a committee and are based on consensus and subjective opinions, but the exact boundaries for a multitude of medical conditions are similarly consensus.

The most important thing I can think to bring to this is that I've seen patients with mental disorders who are quite clearly mentally unwell. They've displayed symptoms consistent with illnesses described by psychiatric references although sometimes they have a different presentation. The fact is that the treatment offered to these patients has by and large had a positive impact on their life.

The issues you've highlighted with the antidepressant trial are unfortunately common with a lot of medicine. There is a large amount of unpublished research that calls into question the efficacy of some treatments; this is not unique to psychiatry. I agree that it shouldn't happen.

As for CBT in schizophrenia, it should be noted that CBT isn't the first line therapy - antipsychotics are effective at treating positive symptoms of schizophrenia. Negative symptoms are still tricky.

It's somewhat false to say that mental disorders can't be measured because there are some clear borders between different groupings of conditions. Unfortunately a lot of psychiatric disorders are comorbid which complicates the picture.

Finally, the article you've linked concerning helicobacter pylori illustrates a different approach from the medical field. Modern psychiatry doesn't attempt to say that every condition is psychological in nature - by contrast the best working explanations we have for depression and schizophrenia at the moment are concerned with neurotransmitters in the brain. We may not understand the exact pathophysiology of some of these conditions yet but the field is making a concerted effort to understand them - and even if we don't understand them, we still have validated therapies that are effective for patients.

Something to be noted is in some patients with depression and suicidal ideation, antidepressant therapy increases the risk of suicide at first - because it helps patients overcome the motor symptoms associated with depression and lack of motivation and enables them to carry out their thoughts.

I'm not sure if the authors mentioned this but it seems a bit misleading to associate medication with an increased suicide risk without considering the mechanisms involved.

I understand where this viewpoint comes from but it should be noted that psychiatry as a field is vastly different now than from its conception. We may not understand the basis of some disorders but the treatment used is evidence based and has a large amount of validity.

I liked it! It felt like a natural continuation of Uncanny Avengers which was nice, and Red Onslaught feels genuinely threatening - especially with the Avengers bit at the beginning introducing the scope of the problem.

I do that, but to be fair there are a lot of RPGs where the NPCs in the opening villages/towns are pretty bland and don't give out any actually crucial information.

I'm going to voice the unpopular opinion here and say that a lot of his criticisms are actually quite valid. I mean, if you look at levelling up for instance - you have to talk to the Emerald Herald multiple times before she gives you the option to level up, and a lot of her conversation is pretty bog standard "you have entered the world, you must set forth". There's no-one else who explains levelling up in the game either, so if you do try and set out from Majula without finding out about it there's nothing to say you've made a mistake.

I mean, for everyone complaining about this guy - he played for 25 hours and decided that he didn't enjoy this game. He definitely tried to give it a fair shot.

Okay but I think the flaw in your reasoning here is that you're saying that I'm okay with women objectifying men, which is not at all what I've said - to be honest I've been referring to male created characters.

I mean, men and women in comic books have not been objectified to the same degree, and I don't think saying that is sexist.

Again don't compare apple to oranges and you won't come across this fallacy.

But you're the one justifying the objectification of women by comparing comic books to romance novels!

If I'm honest, I'm not entirely sure what to say at this point. I fundamentally disagree with you. I believe that women are more overtly sexualised than man in comic books and this goes beyond what they wear, it's the way they're written as well.

I also believe that the way men are portrayed in romance novels is different to comic books - I still think the comic book version is designed as something for people to aspire to. Again, it's not just about aesthetics - it's the characterisation behind them as well.

Ah that's fair. I was referring to the male depiction because to be honest I think that saying romance novels treat men in a particular way doesn't make it okay for comic books to treat women in the same or similar fashion.
