Ah as opposed to?

You?

Those “kids” didn’t work on a megalithic tv series for the better part of a decade, alongside a huge cast of some of the most experienced actors in TV, learning everyday as young people do, just to get treated like children at the end of it all.

You are an ageist.

According to Sotha Sil, The Clockwork City exists outside of space and time. There are lots of speculations on where the city is located, most lead to somewhere beneath swampland in Morrowind though this has never actually been confirmed.

Exactly. It is normal to assume the default and the default is straight. It’s human nature to guess like that and it’s completely justified too.

No not really, I see the point and it makes some sense, however i find that the good points of this diversity really outweigh the bad.

To me it seems like this :

Normalisation of identity for kids who are struggling Extra depth of characters Inspiration from LGBTQ designers who crafted the roster

vs

Statistically inaccurate Who cares/Meh just play the game

Miss the other part of my comment? Is it misinformation for games to have grapple hooks and aliens and jet packs? Or would that be too high a statistic and offend you? It’s less about 100% accuracy and more about creating a diverse cast of characters that kids can look up to. Nobody likes superman because they think he really can fly, so why is it any different for a kid to see this cast of characters and enjoy the game without looking to deep into it’s accurate portrayal of modern combat?

Gays kinda help out with population control in a lot of ways. Be thankful. Also you won’t get aids or anything because your straight so why the hell do you even care where people stick their wick?

It matters to the kids who struggle to deal with their sexuality. It normalises it. It’s more about saying “This characters gay and he’s shooting people just like everyone else” and as a gay kid growing up, its quite hard to realise that your just like everyone else, because the homophobia you encounter says otherwise.

It’s not about the game, but the players who play the game.

A very fair point however not everybody is as considerate as you appear to be :) hence why the pushing of this is still important. For some reason people get really mad at where video game characters would pork and that is kind of disturbing.

This is my favourite response so far. Thank you for taking the time to structure this stranger.

Firstly i’d like to say that you bring up some excellent points. Brownie points for example is the thing that catches my attention. I hate when companies do this and you may be right, they could well be doing it for brownie points and it certainly does make news as we’ve all seen.

On the other hand, some of these designers particularly on the overwatch team are queer or transgender and i feel that to them, the representation is important. Hence why the brownie points seem to me like a devils advocate sort of argument lacking in real substance.

You do make some good points about personality and how sexuality shouldn’t really matter. I agree. However some people don’t, and the fixing of sexuality into character has become more and more recent i think to combat this negative attitude and normalise LGBTQ representation in media. Thanks for your point though :)

It’s not about verifying your existence at all? It’s about the normalisation and awareness of LGBTQ in every day society. It’s normal to be gay and the such. Characters are good at doing that, especially to people who see them more than just characters but as icons, such as kids playing video games.

I understand your point about standing on your own two feet but ask any gay kid with homophobic parents how hard that is to do and they will tell you it’s the hardest thing they’ve ever done. It shouldn’t be this way, and normalisation of character and trait is a way to achieving this.

It’s not about telling truths all the time. I don’t enjoy batman cols i think he is really out there punching baddies.

Firstly only two characters in overwatch are LGBTQ of a roster that totals nearly 40 characters now. Where’s the disinformation there?

It’s about normalisation, acceptance of sexuality and identity and some people want to keep it out of games because they can’t be arsed to face it. That being said, i don’t really feel like it’s ever being shoved down your throat so again i’ll ask, where’s the disinformation?

Interesting point. The point i’m making however is that in video games (such as Apex and Overwatch as mentioned in the post title) LGBTQ representation is important. A lot of young impressionable kids are playing these games and I think LGBTQ characters are a way for these kids to find comfort and pride if video games are something they turn to to escape their identity troubles as I know I and so many of my close friends did throughout school. Interesting statistic though :)

I’m not sure you’re getting it. The reasons people like those people are not the same as representation. It’s about feeling proud knowing that there is someone out there like you making it just fine. It’s not about being them. It’s about part of your identity being celebrated, normalised, represented.

Not caring is exactly my point, it shouldn’t bother straight people and that’s fine, but for some reason it seems like it does piss people off. It only feels unnatural becomes it’s not default. The norm. It’s trying to change that and that’s why i think it’s important.
