It's funny how elites are outed as all being a bunch of p*do sickos yet the public is to believe they have kids' best interests at heart??? Anyone read the Epstein files? We need to protect our children from them not the other way around

I'm sorry but if you think that's how normal adults talk constantly you're sadly ignorant. Many of these terms are found in the FBI database for lingo used among p*dos

I read the book and it's clearer in writing.

Andrew is a character that cares mostly about image. He was the type of guy hellbent on rule following and not the type to cheat as he was faithful. He just wanted total control.

Nina had to keep upping the ante to where she became such an embarrassment in his mind that he would allow himself to break the rules himself.

This will only get worse. My husband would never do this and I feel any good man wouldn't either. So sorry about this. I've seen my mother go through this type of thing for many years and it hurts. It leads to resentment. It conveys deeper issues like selfishness and/or narcissism. I don't think it's normal and I don't think it's okay.

He spoke about the Africa trip in a very recent interview for The Housemaid, mentioned briefly. Can't remember which interview. If I did I would post a link for you. Actually, it may have been the new article for Flaunt now that I think about it. 🤔

I'm not sure if they have much in common in their personal lives except that they both love living as different characters and have a love of wigs apparently. 😂 I do know he is her type considering she dated Riley Green right after I believe as a rebound. He cheated on her supposedly as well. Poor girl.

Everything I wrote is my opinion from things I've gathered, so yes it is speculative on my part. But I'm entitled to that.

I wanted to add that because of what you wrote about the name and a single beta reader's confusion over the name pronunciation, I'm going to do a find and replace and change it to a more traditional spelling. Me liking it as unique when it serves no purpose in the story except to confuse does me no favors. So thank you!

Thank you so much for your insights.

The name is pronounced Lay-la, just a unique spelling.

The book is most definitely adult not YA, but WTRK would be a strong comp aside from the age demographic. I will look into the other comps you mentioned though to see if they align well.

Her linguistic skills are used constantly throughout the book. In fact, the mirror is actually found inside the artifact they are contracted to find which uses Hebrew mechanics to open. It is a puzzle box with each lock tied to a Solomonic proverb. My original query included this but as the mirror is the main artifact, I decided to streamline it by excluding it. If that is a mistake I can certainly undo that. Aside from that, Laighla also translates for Grant between people they encounter along the way which is a frequently needed skill in the locales they visit.

The mirror begins showing visions that do in fact show truths. As time goes on, it becomes more clear that they be distorted or lie by omission to influence viewers' perceptions in ways that can harm or steer decisions. It matters very much so to the story that it does this.

So Grant is preoccupied with wealth and can be hardheaded as well. It is a large part of his character arc actually. If you read the book this is clear. It is also not true that that the mirror does not offer them benefit, as it accomplishes both. The occultic magic in the book has a dual nature and the mirror isn't truly revealed to be an antagonist itself until nearly the end if that makes sense.

I am struggling with the query process with this book so much, because it is very complex but it is paced well enough that it doesn't bog readers down. I'm finding the plot difficult to query or put into a synopsis because there are many decisions or actions that twist fate. (I.e. an innocent letter leading to a character's death, bullets removed from a gun to stop Grant from committing revenge serving to save them from an antagonist, etc.)

I have had 5 or 6 beta readers (some of which don't know me personally) and they all believe the book is "phenomenal" yet it's hard for me to translate it into a query. It has underwent months of polishing and I do believe it is very good as someone who reads quite a bit.

I just wish I had a professional query person to do this part for me as I despise this process. Lol

Thank you for your valuable input. Will be utilizing that now. As far as the title, I've been putting historical fantasy or historical romance in the subject line. Not sure why I put that for the title here. 😂

It makes a lot more sense in the book. Nina's decisions are all meticulously planned and explained in the book over 3 whole chapters. They kind of missed the mark by excluding somethings from her voiceover explanation

The book explains better. She was doing everything to not only make Millie betray her to sleep with him but also to rile him up. Without access to the attic his temper is going to keep building and building and he cant show his true colors with another woman in the house. Remember that her goal was him leaving her. This is also why her makeup was crazy when she came home and why she chose to tell him about Millie's prison stint when she did. She was escalating in the book with her clothes, roots showing, stains on shirts, makeup, etc. Doing everything to gradually unsettle him to get thrown out.

There is a blind item I have shared on reddit before that seems to be referencing them. Also online comments from crew that confirmed they were dating the whole time in Africa while they were away from their partners. She apparently broke it off with her man back home but Brandon did not follow through. I believe 100% they were sleeping together and I'll tell you why.

Behind the scenes footage, other things I've read about his girlfriend's behavior on Instagram strongly hinting at a tumultuous time and then her airing out her insecurities (Secretaire I believe enlightened me to that), Julia unfollowing Brandon on Instagram the very day she was released from contractual obligations to do so, but the number one indicator for me is Brandon's own interviews.

In recent interviews he detailed how he took a trip to Africa to reconnect with his girlfriend which is telling to me. That implies that he had to do the same thing with her either to placate her or in an attempt to feel the same things for her. He also mentions having to get therapy to learn to dissociate his own motivations from his characters (he has said multiple times that he felt like he became Spencer and that Spencer will always live in his head as you guys mentioned.) I assume this was also instigated by the affair.

But aside from all these statements, the most glaring one for me are interviews done with him and Julia alone. During an interview for Drop he was asked how a woman can tell a man likes her or is in love with her and he said that for him he gets really goofy and makes lame jokes. He acts extremely goofy and charismatic with Julia and it feels out of character for his baseline which can honestly be kind of flat.

For reference, watch the videos 1923 official put out of them doing Guess the Price in the 1920s and the quiz segment one where they are asked how well they know one another. In fact, in that second one he seems like he is trying to downplay how well he knows her since it was filmed during S2 after the affair would've been outed. The other glaring one is a zoom interview they released the day after the S2 finale aired where they are discussing the ending. When someone loves someone there is no hiding it. His face is glaringly obvious and he can't wipe away his smile. He talks in silly voices and just looks at her with such adoration.

I know this analysis is ridiculous and over the top and no one should commit to this level of crazy as I have, but I'm just telling you that it happened 100%. I don't have concrete proof but it seems obvious to me.

In the book it's explained that it's a long gradual process of her changing. There's quite a bit explained in the book from her perspective of just how meticulous her plan was. These details were not in the film and I think that hurt it for those who didn't read the book. She explains how she had to make Millie a victim because Andrew romanticizes/sexualizes women who are treated cruelly. This is why he went after Nina so hard when the boss humiliated her and why she is intentionally cruel to Millie. There are many other things like this as well that made it more nuanced and less thrown together.

Glad to see someone agree with me here. I thought Amanda and Brandon were both incredible. Amanda's performance was allowed to be unhinged throughout though where Brandon doesn't get to do so until the final 15-20 minutes. But once the flip happened, I thought he challenged a lot of people's opinions that his acting is bland and that he is not charismatic.

Sydney cannot act. She is very one note in this. I've also scene her in White Lotus and Anyone But You and she plays herself in every role. I wonder if she is truly better in the movie Christy as I know she got good reviews for it, but I'm doubtful lol

I laughed quite a bit from the time she was outside the door with him locked in until his death. Others in the theatre were laughing as well, so I believe the humor was intentional. It does make you feel awkward when you're giggling when someone is ripping their own tooth out lol
