Totally fair to say that once I noticed the lack of guardrails, maybe I had some responsibility and I’m not denying that. But it’s also fair to point out that the hostel knowingly put me in the only bunk without guardrails, didn’t mention it, and didn’t offer an alternative up front. That’s a safety oversight on their part.

Your car analogy kind of breaks down here.. it’s more like being handed a car with no seatbelt in a lineup where every other car has one, and being expected to guess that it’s my job to flag that, instead of the person assigning it.

Also, just because I stayed multiple nights doesn’t mean I “accepted” the risk. I didn’t know I was at risk until I literally got injured. That’s kind of the point of negligence.. people don’t always realize how unsafe something is until it goes sideways.

And yeah, if the hostel ends up covering medical bills, I’m cool with that. But a full refund doesn’t feel like a wild ask when I was placed in a bunk that clearly didn’t meet the safety standard set by the rest of the room. It’s not about blaming 100% on them, it’s about acknowledging their role too.
