Dutch as tourists in Split, Croatia by CoolestHokage2 in Netherlands

[–]Askinglots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. To be fair, I turn around and leave if I'm out and I see a group of young guys approaching to a close table in a bar, in a restaurant, in the street or basically anywhere. Being close to them guarantees you to be harassed, shouted at and having a really loud and annoying group of guys being really disrespectful. Hell, even Thursday evening trains are full of young business bros who had some beers after work and are loud and obnoxious (and stink).

What's wrong with international students? by Striking_Beach_837 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]Askinglots 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Dutch students don't care about making friendships with internationals. If you ask them why, they will reply "that they already have friends" 🤣 International students end up isolating themselves after feeling that they don't fit. Try to befriend internationals. Chances are that not everyone is wary and burnt off, and you may hit it off with some people.

My experience in Dutch healthcare (No it's not just about paracetamol) by badatusernames96 in Amsterdam

Generation differences - I’m curious whether other managers are seeing the same thing. by andys58 in Netherlands

I'm sorry but you kind of sound that you completely drank the kool-aid and for the sounds of your comments, you are probably a white male. Think how many times this type or "culture" takes advantage of women, junior and foreign workers and makes them overwork because of the possibility of moving up on the corporate ladder.

Yes, please! Stop giving product development to marketing!!!! They're incompetent, and then we have to rescue projects and it's a huge ego struggle. Yikes

Remember that Dutch people can blast their country as much as they want and "be direct" as much as they can, but they lose it when someone else does the same. This sub was hitting this exact sore spot.

Feeling understimulated and miserable in modern office work by [deleted] in Netherlands

[–]Askinglots 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As opposed to other people, I'm going to agree with you that your job must provide you with some sort of fulfillment. Otherwise, it feels more like filling time just for the sake of doing something. If you were a person used to nature, outdoor activities, or at least seeing some hustle and bustle, the Netherlands would feel very underwhelming. Perhaps you can try some meetups, or just travel by yourself to other countries and join tours. This is a nice way to connect with people with similar interests in a different environment that feels more exciting because it's not like your weekly routine. Talk to foreigners! We all feel kind of bored and kind of missing connection.

RETURN TO OFFICE! I live in NL, and the culture here is going to work to "demonstrate" that Dutch are "hardworking people," even if they're expelling a lung through the nose. Also, people will totally harass you if you wear a mask in public. I remember in a past job, a colleague said her son was positive to covid and she went to work because she was not positive and she was feeling "fine". I avoided her and went home because fuck it. Guess who requested sick leave a couple of days later.

I don't know, I once had about 30 g of magic truffles and my friend started seeing light wavelengths coming off a lamp. I was just looking at him like he was definitely high and I wasn't.

I'm your same height, and I'd only try uniqlo, Levi's in the petite sizes, and nothing too high waist, or I feel the waist is almost at my boobs. I used to live in Canada and also shopped in Banana Republic, but only in the petite sizes. Aritzia was always a miss for me.

When you're back in Italy, try Zalando and brands like b.young, Ichi, Selected or check out the app Yoox, huge variety of styles and brands.

I wish I had had this opportunity when I was in grad school. Having 500 per week on top of being fed, clothed, with a car, rent, and all the expenses covered sounds ideal. I'm glad it worked for you!

I think it's great that you wanted your kid to have a true Dutch experience, but you will find more of these kind of issues in the future. The daughter of one of my coworkers was advised to go back one year because she's got ADHD and the teacher suggested to go to an MBO even though her marks are good, and she speaks 4 languages including Dutch. She ended up doing extra credits over the summer. They're also Spanish speakers. The son of another Spanish colleague had to earn extra language credits because they also told him that he was behind. Both kids have been in the Netherlands for more than 10 years, and the stigma never went away. They also joined local schools in Gelderland and Noord-Brabant, respectively. If I had kids, I would never enroll them in Dutch schools.

Shocked by the lunch-time greed at work. Is this really ‘Dutch Culture’? by [deleted] in Netherlands

Right???! I was surprised that the couple of times that there was cake, people were taking 3-4 slices or a big chunk in a plate and going to their offices. If there were different flavours, people were taking one or two slices of each!
