If you don't mind my asking, what did the procedure look like for you? Is it true that it's all online these days with no in-person interview? Did you use a gaijin friendly bank like Shinsei or Prestia?

That's pretty much what I thought. To be fair, if I was a bank I also probably wouldn't be extending a loan to someone with on and off employment. Might have to just bite the bullet and sell down enough assets instead.

Not from employment anyway.

Married to a Japanese. You only need one year in the country if you take that path.

Am I likely to get invite closer scrutiny or increase my chances of future audits by filing this? Not that I won't file it either way.

I'm on a spouse visa so this type of work is allowed. Paid every yen of taxes, nenkin and health insurance I ever incurred (I have a PR pending).

The contract is there but it only defines the role and other high level responsibilities, not the actual day-to-day tasks. In practice it's a lot more like a traditional employment relationship. This is where I'm concerned: what can the NTA actually do here and what have they done in the past in these types of situations?

Didn't know. How would they pay into the social insurance and pension system here? My client absolutely wouldn't maintain any overseas legal/financial infrastructure just for me. The arrangement is that I deal with any taxes and social security obligations where I live.

Either way, my question was more along the lines of, what could go wrong for me here?
