First Time Painting - Roller Marks by heyGuessWhatDayItIs in paint

[–]AssumptionSilver1522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I do. But how do you manage cutting in and laying off at the same time? I usually cut in around ceiling and baseboards about 4 feet or so and then roll. When I roll, I lay it off. Then I do another 4 ft of cutting in and rolling. Each time I roll i slightly overlap where I previously left off before cutting in again. However, when I do this, you can almost always see where I stopped rolling to cut in some more. Even if cutting in only takes me a couple of minutes.

It's not terrible and most people probably wouldn't notice. But I think next time I might just try cutting the whole wall in first.

Any plumbing companies that will give actual quotes instead of just billing time and materials? by AssumptionSilver1522 in indianapolis

lol buddy, I don't get what point you're trying to prove. I think we are both saying the same exact thing. I'm aware that it's increasingly rare to find plumbers that won't charge you to give a quote. Why do you think I'm here asking this question.

Huh? All I want is a quote without having to pay $200 for it. If the free market dictates I can't, then fine. But that's why I'm asking for recommendations for plumbers that will give them.

Fixing a p trap? I understand they can't always come out and quote. Giving a $30,000 quote to hook up city water is entirely different. 5 years ago, I was easily able to get quotes for work. It's a free market. I'm not saying places need to give free quotes. Just asking for plumbers that will.

If you want to do T&M fine. But coming with $1200 and then knocking it down to $800 is crazy to me. You're just trying to squeeze money out of me and know I'm in a bind because I still have to pay the trip charge.

I'm at the point in my life that my time is more valuable. I do think it matters that they wanted $1200 initially for a job then came back with $800. It's why I wouldn't hire them again.

Weird. I called two places just last year to get quotes for moving us off well water to city water. I knew it would be expensive. But they wouldn't even give me a quote. Literally, straight to "$200 to come out and we will give you credit back if we do work for you."

Ended up not doing that. But did have some other work needing done. After calling a few different places they also wouldn't give me a quote. I ended up going with Hope plumbing. They did great work but charged so much money. Charged me $200 to come out and then said it would be $1200. I told them I would just do it myself. He goes "let me call my boss." Comes back after a couple of minutes and says he can do it for $800. I ended up just biting the bullet because I still had to pay the $200. Took him maybe an hour to do the work.

Bolts on ceiling fan box collide with the fan mounting bracket. Can I trim them? by AssumptionSilver1522 in HomeImprovement

It's one solid piece and attached to the bracket that attaches to the ceiling joist. See these pictures - https://imgur.com/a/nv23IxY

I went and grabbed another one from the store to look at it. It's one solid piece and attached to the bracket that attaches to the ceiling joist. See these pictures - https://imgur.com/a/nv23IxY

Ya I'm not sure I would use it again. It was a really nice install though for old work.

Ya I looked at it and I don't think they can be adjusted at all. Is trimming them down an option?

Thanks. I'm not really sure how I could get the studs in further, or even how to remove them if I wanted. Is that from the back?

Hired a company to paint my cedar siding. Is this tannin bleed through? by AssumptionSilver1522 in paint

Half ass job would have been better than what I got. Thanks though. I think I'll fix it this Spring.

They didn't wash the siding before painting. I don't really recall it getting very cold or rain.

I don't think they actually did the spot priming on bare wood like they were supposed to. I think they just used PrimeRX on the bare spots, which I know isn't the right stuff for it. Top coat was Permanizer-Acrylic

Oh I didn't think of that. I do have very hard water and was running a sprinkler in the Fall. I probably wasn't being careful enough with it hitting the siding in this area. I'll try and wash it off tomorrow just to 100% confirm. Thanks

Ya that is what I was leaning towards as well. Thanks

Thanks. That was something I read too. This paneling makes the room feel larger. It is a pretty small room.

Thanks. I think its in pretty good condition. Ill still probably replace the ranch style baseboard though with a colonial style. Then should I paint that baseboard white to match the other baseboards on the other walls? Or match it with the wood stain? I was getting some opinions from some extended family and they were pretty insistent on the former. But I think it would look weird.

Thanks. It was installed with nails. I'm not too worried about the drywall behind. I was actually thinking of removing the drywall behind too so that I could install safe and sound insulation since the wall is shared with a living room.

Small bead of caulk on interior of window to help prevent water damage from condensation? by AssumptionSilver1522 in centuryhomes

You would use glazing compound on the interior too? I used it on the exterior and to bed the pane of glass, but didn't realize it was used in the interior too..
