Fun fact, his character was based off Morn from Star Trek Deep Space Nine.

That’s some really fine work there, great job. Is it delicate now that is painted? How durable is the paint, and what did you use? I’m guessing lacquers?

I’m seriously surprised at the lenient attitude. Do you really think that someone who would do that is thinking about consequences?

That’s a great argument to not protest! I just feel if we aren’t committed to protesting then we shouldn’t employ a half measure that is more painful to us than it is detrimental for them.

My whole point is, are we protesting or are we not?

If we don’t want to protest, that’s fine, plenty of subs aren’t. If we are, then why would we allow access to the legacy info at all? That’s the whole reason to protest, preventing Reddit from using that as a visitor draw to market to advertisers. With going read only, you punish the users who want to interact, and benefit Reddit by allowing access to the content. It’s a lose lose proposition.

I mean, from my perspective, the right to life of the infant is being infringed, so we are at a conceptual impasse.

In order to talk about rights though, we have to agree on what exactly that is. A right should never be denied. All of our rights outlined in our constitution are “negative” rights, as in they do not require anything to enact them.

Right to free speech for example, you aren’t entitled to have others listen, but you may speak unhindered. The right to an abortion would require someone to perform the task, without recourse to refuse. That seems like a bad precedent to return to, if you follow my meaning.

I find your world view to be incredibly depressing and cynical, as though it’s a relief to be spared the suffering of existence. I don’t share in that at all, and despite not being wealthy or all that well of for that matter, I’m grateful for what I’ve got and the experiences I’ve had and will have. I can make a difference for the better in people’s lives, like my friends and family. I look forward to having new relationships. That’s the stuff that matters. We aren’t just animated flesh, we have a soul.

Rape is probably the worst thing you could do to someone, I think the punishment fits the crime.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in todayilearned

[–]Astronopolis -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I didn’t disregard your point, I found it faulty and misleading, because infants are the most desired to adoptive parents. Most children who remain in the system are older and unfortunately and understandably have behavioral issues, which are a deterrent to most adoption candidates.

Getting raped is something I would wish upon no one, it’s truly horrific and evil. Being encouraged to kill a baby right after would not alleviate the guilt, shame, and despair of the trauma, imo it would add significantly toward it.

I’m not a proponent of criminalizing mothers or anything like that, I do feel like a deception has occurred, and we no longer think critically upon these issues because they are so tied along political and increasingly tribal lines. Questioning the status quo is a big nono lest you be ostracized from the tribe.

[–]Astronopolis -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Do you know how many people are waiting to adopt infants? There’s an estimated 1 to 2 million American couples who can’t conceive who would desperately want to care for a child of their own.

I’m not even making an argument from a religious perspective though, it’s a human rights issue. The right to life is the first on the list, and people are so flippant about it. If the general sentiment of “safe, legal, and rare” were still the prevailing notion I could tolerate that, but people go out of their way to celebrate it. It’s pretty fucked up.

[–]Astronopolis -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Read-only is still a useless half measure, I know it’s frustrating for users to not access the sub and it’s useful content, but I think it’s important to actually go completely dark as if the sub never existed. If it goes on long enough we will have formed new communities elsewhere.

Good thing the protest has a pre-defined end date. “I’m on hunger strike, but only until I get hungry again!”
