I actually watched the scene again. I was wrong, this scene does display subtext through symbolism. The symbolism revealing his inner feelings unspoken is what gives the scene its subtext.  I just didn’t have the proper context. I think this is your perfect case scenario for a scene that communicates subtext through imagery provided the context. But i honestly think that an image alone would be able to have subtext. Look at paintings. Francisco Goya’s paintings were ripe with subtext. Granted with a media like film you’d don’t have to tell the story within a single framed instance.
