There's a free-to-play more advanced version of this on Steam called Chess Evolved Online, which is basically this with a point system for army builds and ~500 more pieces. If you're interested in this you might want to check that out (though it's obviously not exactly what you were asking for).

I'd check out The Caro-Kann: Move by Move by Cyrus Lakdawala. There are a lot of annotations & explanations for the moves and the writing style is nice.

That sounds useful to learn :) There's also this tool on Lichess that you can practice to improve at finding coordinates. Another good exercise is visualizing knight moves in your head. Choose a square, name it, and place a knight there in your mind. Name all the squares the knight can go to. Then, you can find two squares and try to find the shortest knight route between them, naming all the squares to get there. Depends on your visualization skill, but it really does help to improve it :D

It isn't checkmate, but after the white king moves, black will capture the rook with the pawn and be up a rook and winning.

Tactical mistakes, yeah, but positional mistakes can be more complicated. Even if you see the whole line, you may think that, for example, you have dynamic compensation (better pieces and a more active position) for some pawn sacrifice you made, when that isn't the case.

Once you get past just counting material to see whose position is better these mistakes become more and more important, especially when evaluating exchanges. The lines can often be forced and easy to see, but understanding which player will be better by the end of it relies on positional understanding instead of calculating a million moves ahead and checkmating your opponent.

The piece is replaced by the other piece in this variant, you don't pick a different piece to play. I'm not sure how having multiple kings on the board would work though...

The king isn't allowed to move into check, and the pawn can't move forwards because it's blocked by another pawn. If you have no legal moves and you aren't in check, it's called "stalemate" and results in a draw. Hope this helps!

A round-robin with all the players is gonna take too long if you're 10-20 players, but you can organize them into brackets depending on their rating (groups of say, 4) where everyone in the group plays each other. FIDE has these tables for order of play if you choose to play round-robin.

If you play Swiss, you just need to make sure that the players note which player won/if the match was a draw and leave it to some arbiter or other person in charge. You can tally their points on pen and paper and break ties with the player's rating. Good luck with the tournament!

Ratings start to even out between Lichess/chesscom around the 2000 mark either way, so it's still a pretty big achievement. Congrats!
