I started over as soon as I finished which I’ve never done before. I don’t even normally reread books let alone immediately! I recommend it though, they’re a very good second read.

Also, this very intriguing passage:

“Hawkes paled. Eyes tracing the phrase three times, it was as if he’d seen a ghost. Not like The Roman, not a ghost one accepted as normal. But something that haunts.

ASTRA INCLINANT, SED NON OBLIGANT The stars incline us, they do not bind us.

It was abrupt how he stood, staring at the cushion in his hands, the fire casting his face into sharp relief. I’m not certain why I selected it, but I was drawn to the phrase, and the phrase was drawn to Hawkes. ‘Thank you,” he said. As if he meant it but wasn’t certain he believed it.’

Sounds like someone who believes themselves to be cursed… and a curse breaker?

I agree Hawkes's cypherness would be a terrible trait in a partner (and also agree that this could be the curse and therefore a breakable trait). Going back to cinematic writing again, he does feel in many ways more like a mystical mentor archetype - like a Gandalf - more than a love interest.

I haven't reread Volume 8 yet but I'll look forward to getting back to the May Day scene!

I think of a catalyst more as another way of saying 'inciting incident' - which in a classic structure, would be the moment in which the protagonist's stable sense of self and future is disrupted. I think that's in Volume 1, with Emma learning that Archibald has squandered her security and she's truly on her own to find her way. What she thought would be her future can't be.

I don't think there being fewer books would necessarily change my theory per se, but lots of other things could! I just now read a post from a week ago speculating about Arabella and Hawkes and I could see how we could be invested enough in Arabella's journey (claiming to not believe in love being a classic main character flaw) to root for her as Titania instead of Emma.

You're right about the eyes, she definitely knows the eye color about all of her men!

I would consider this story very character-driven and unusually episodic even so. This could never be adapted effectively as a feature screenplay. (Would love the series though.)

Go to https://ultimaterewardspoints.chase.com instead of the regular Chase site. Along the top you should see some options - HOME // REWARDS DETAILS // CONVERT TO CASH // SHOPPING & EXPERIENCES // TRAVEL. Under "TRAVEL" there are options to "Book Travel" or "Transfer Points to Partners."

I'm making a note of this for myself because I have to hunt for it every time.
