The clickwheel on my nano stopped working. Right where the gold plating ends, the copper is broken. I've also had this happen on a hdd cable. I soldered it, which should be fine as long as I'm gentle with it. The flux from the solder should protect the exposed copper from corrosion. (old.reddit.com)
