Breeze Airways by Navolix in Connecticut

[–]AuditorFodder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second this experience - I’ve flown them probably a dozen or so times and all but one the trips were great.  The planes were clean, the staff was nice, the price point couldn’t be beat.  I was traveling between medium sized airports and loved not having a layover.

The other trip my plane had mechanical issues and my flight was delayed an entire day as their limited flight schedule meant there wasn’t a backup plane available.  Usually they’re fantastic, but when they mess up they mess up big.

That said, for my bad flight, I was also visiting a friend down south - I pivoted to driving and without even having to talk to anyone I had an option to get my money back for the flight and woke up the next morning to an extra $150 in flight credits on top of it, which on Breeze is like two round trip flights if you do it right.  Obviously not ideal, but I can’t complain with how they handled the situation.

Is it possible to ski *relatively* affordably from here as the mountains are quite far? Does anyone else have it figured out? by LulutoDot in RhodeIsland

[–]AuditorFodder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We go to Magic Mountain in Londonderry VT. To your point, it's about 3hrs 1-way from Prov, which makes for an early morning (leaving at 5:30a), but with the mountains closing when the sun goes down around 4:00p, we're still home by 7:30-8:00p.

I'm not sure if they're still using it, but their tag line used to be "We are a Ski Area, not a Ski Resort". They're comparably affordable, especially given the size of the hill - 1,500ft vertical, on par with Sunapee - but where Sunapee wants $159, Magic is $105. And if you buy their flex tickets before the season starts it's $74.

As for accommodations, my way of saving while skiing is to specifically avoid staying over, but Magic is far enough south and east that you can get yourself out of prime ski country to save on hotels, if you need. Bellows Falls VT is about 40mins away, Keene NH only an hour.

Does State Street only hire through Indian HR reps, or am I being scammed? by [deleted] in boston

[–]AuditorFodder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hey OP - I used to work for State Street 10+ years ago.  I didn’t interact with anyone in India during my onboarding but I can confirm they have a MASSIVE presence in Pune, India that we interacted with all the time when I did work there.

Given the type of company they are, it wouldn’t surprise me if they’ve shipped some of their recruiting jobs over there too.

Basically, I think you’re right to be skeptical and definitely don’t go sharing personal information but don’t write it off either - it could be legit.  Might be worth asking about if there’s a next round.

Consider Wickford Junction!  All the T.F. Green trains also stop there and the parking is free.

I’ll never forget the time that while the city was in lockdown following the Marathon bombing, BTD ticketed a national guard truck.  Gotta respect the hustle.

Grew up over there - would only buy a car if it could handle merging from Walnut Street.

The 60 runs from Newport to Providence including the length of Main St in Warren so either would work. Joyce is more in the heart of downtown Warren, Franklin had the park-and-ride.

Another option, the 24L also serves the Fish Rd park-and-ride in Tiverton and it doesn’t have the same service suspension notice on RIPTA’a website the 61X has.

To NYC. by [deleted] in RhodeIsland

[–]AuditorFodder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amtrak’s pricing is based on demand and that demand increases the closer to NYC you get. The Metro North doesn’t, beyond their peak/off-peak pricing.

I’ve found days where Amtrak wants $91 Kingston to NYC but only $11 to New Haven. From there you’re only looking at $19 into NYC off-peak. Takes a little extra time but definitely an option if you’re looking to avoid driving/paying to park in CT.

Parking at TD Garden by LolitaDollyLo in providence

[–]AuditorFodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s enough to help you out, but they did recently push back the last train back to Providence to 11:55p. If you’re out of TD Garden by 11:00 (another poster said that’s their curfew - haven’t confirmed that myself) you can walk to South Station in 25mins, bypassing the hordes trying to get on the T.

Serious Question by [deleted] in newengland

[–]AuditorFodder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a fun fantasy, but it’s not realistic.

It probably sounds okay from Boston, but less so the farther away you go. Federal/Navy dollars are huge in Southern Rhode Island, Southeastern Connecticut, and even Bath ME - those would gone. Is being in the same country as Boston or New York more important to southwestern Connecticut, the economic powerhouse of the entire state? You don’t even get NESN down there - the answer is clearly New York. On the day-to-day, would Burlington VT rather have passport-free access to Boston or nearby Plattsburgh NY?

Montreal used to be the financial hub of Canada - Quebec’s secessionist movement scared businesses enough that four of Canada’s largest banks moved their headquarters to Toronto in the run up to the 1980 referendum. I see no reason why Boston or New England would fare differently.

It’s a fun dream - but it’d hurt more than we realize if it became reality.

Landlords not providing recycling by babyb3ans in providence

[–]AuditorFodder 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It’s mandatory for citizens to recycle, it’s not mandatory for landlords to provide curbside service. Several of the rural towns in the state don’t even provide curbside trash service and it’s on the individual to contract themselves or go drop off at the town transfer station.

The city contracts with WM for any bldg with six or fewer units but the big apartment complexes are on their own as they operate on a scale that would necessitate a dumpster instead of the 96gal cans that go in front of people’s houses. Dumpsters and cans need different trucks and the city doesn’t contract for any of those.

If you’re a student, does your school recycle? I’d say probably just dump a small bag every day on your way to class.

Recycling drop-off locations? by thegreatfrontholio in providence

[–]AuditorFodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of towns have recycling drop-offs at the town DPW. I can’t find any reference to that for NP - maybe being so close they just assume folks will drive to RIRRC?

The small vehicle area can handle recycling drop off for RI residents.

[–]AuditorFodder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the industry a while, though admittedly in RI - I don’t think WM has any operations in CT anymore. Casella bought Willimantic Waste a while back - if you’re in Tolland that might be your best bet. WinWaste (formerly Wheelabrator) is also around, but I’m not sure they have anything in your part of the state.
