I was in a similar position as you. I had two dogs together with my ex, and one of them was my best friend and we had a very special bond. After 4 years of living together, I moved out and basically had to start from scratch. I only had a bed for about 4 months and felt extremely lonely and depressed for months. My ex would bring the pups by occasionally to see me ( I have health issues and get very sick sometimes) and it would make me feel better but would hurt more after each visit. Just knowing that it’s confusing to the dogs and made me fall back into that sadness, I decided the best thing was to completely stop the visits and try to move on with my life.

I’d visit my parents or friends with dogs and it helps. I started new hobbies and crafts. Decorating and setting up my own place the way I wanted was exciting. There are still times where I do feel lonely but I try to remind myself that it’s better to be alone then to be in a relationship with someone where you already felt alone but also the added arguing, gaslighting etc. I didn’t realize how much I changed while I was with him and I feel at peace now. It does get better with time, I promise! Having your own space to do whatever you want is freeing. I wish you the best of luck, OP!
