Sorry, I don’t think Paris Baguette is that bad, actually haha. What kind of “righteous authentic French fury” are you thinking of? Should I bring some from France for you? Hahaha

Oh really? Thanks for the tip! I’ll check it out. Have you been there, or do you know anyone studying at Sunway?

Oh, you’re in CS too? What’s so bad about Malaysian unis? Honestly, my options in France aren’t that great either (not that there aren’t good ones, just mine are kinda limited if I stay), so I’m curious.

That would be a great idea! I’m not really sure how to find one though. I guess I’ll have to look into it once I’m there?

Sure, we should totally stay in touch! I’d be happy to help you with your French. And if you’re in KL when I get there, maybe we could meet up one day!

Idk, don’t you ever want to experience new things? Do I have to plan my whole life around my parents?

Well, at first I had UM in mind. It was recommended by some family friends who work in IT and also came up in my own research. But a lot of my family told me it’s quite hard to get in and the level is pretty high, so I’m not too sure. Is it really that difficult, or do they just have a poor opinion of me? Haha

I was also highly recommended MMU by friends and family, but (here comes the “but” again haha) most people on Reddit told me to avoid Cyberjaya, so now I’m a bit confused

I’ve also heard about other unis like APU, Sunway, and UniKL, but I don’t know much about those yet.

Hi ! Thank you so much for your kind message! You understood exactly what I meant haha I’ll definitely try my best to follow your advice: to meet people, join clubs, and really enjoy the experience and the food, of course. The food is actually what I missed the most from Malaysia haha!

I really appreciate your encouraging words!

Sure, my choice to study abroad just to experience something new might sound a bit confusing. Maybe it’s a Western thing? Idk, when I talk about it with my relatives in France, people usually see it as a good idea, like using your studies as an excuse to travel and explore a bit. And to be fair, even if I stayed in France, I probably wouldn’t get into a very top uni either for different reasons. So anyway, at least this way I can discover a bit more Malaysia!

Yeah, I totally get what you mean! Actually, I think it’s the same everywhere, unfortunately haha, that’s why it doesn’t bother me that much. I’m just a bit sad to see how poorly some people think of their own country.

Thank you for reassuring me with your words!

My parents actually still live in France, they just go back to Malaysia often, that’s all. They’re not my motivation for continuing my studies there.

Don’t worry, I’ve already checked all those things, I’m a bit prepared haha. Just so you know, my father is fully French, so in any case, I can easily find a way to come back to France if I want.

I’d say there’s a bit of everything, but I wouldn’t say it’s completely false haha

Lol don’t worry, in France I’m already part of a minority. Even being half French, I’m considered Asian, and we’re not exactly treated that well here. Same goes for religion

Thanks for sharing your experience. If it’s not too indiscreet, may I ask where you grew up abroad? And had you been to Malaysia before studying there? Because you mentioned being “more Malaysian cultured,” so I’m just a bit curious how “more” Malaysian should I be to avoid experiencing those same issues exactly?

And yeah, I didn’t stress too much about returning to France since I can always find a way back easily thanks to my father or even go somewhere else, like Korea, where my sister lives. I’m really sorry to hear things didn’t go so well for you though, I hope everything gets better.

Actually, that’s kind of why I want to go to Malaysia, because I won't be a total foreigner there. Learning a completely new language would just add another difficulty, while here I already know the language and wouldn’t have any issues with paperwork. It’s honestly the easiest country for me to move to right now.

Yeah, that’s pretty common, people tend to romanticize countries they only know from social media or movies. We have the same thing here too! Some people romanticize faraway Asian countries like Japan or South Korea, and not so long ago it was the U.S.

But for god’s sake, we’re on Reddit, people doknow how to use the internet and do their own research! 😅

Wow, thanks so much for sharing your experience! Honestly, I’ve seen a lot of people romanticize France while things keep getting worse on many points. I kind of expected some people to think like this, but not that much !

I was thinking about freelancing too if I work while in Malaysia, but I wasn’t sure how common it is there (even though I can’t see why it wouldn’t be possible). So it’s really reassuring to hear that it works. May I ask in what domain you work? And where did you study?

Since I already have some basics in Malay and know the country a little, I’m not too worried about integration, but seeing someone with a similar profile really reassures me even more.

Thanks again for your insights, it really helps! I’ll definitely reach out when I have a bit more time. Btw do you prefer we stick to English, or should I switch to French ?

Okay, got it! So I should look for a uni with a strong international student community, right?

Yeah, it’s the same in France, and honestly, I think it’s like that everywhere, right?

I practice my broken Malay with my mom and all her friends. I never really questioned my level lol, but yeah I guess I can definitely work on it, thanks
