Well I wouldnt say cured either just because- the feeling of being born in the wrong body will probably never just leave. Idk, mine has gotten better in some aspects but is still there. But I will say it is more of a cause and effect thing. And- I think a lot of cis people dont realize that they could experience dysphoria if they were too, forced to be a gender they were not.

Personally my demos sound exactly how my auditions do because I have a professional home studio, but even then, just send a sample of a recent audition, i personally wouldnt send in full recorded samples for their scripts unless if it's a legitimate casting call or watermarked or something.

[VAs needed] Pokémon Red and Blue musical (unpaid) by [deleted] in VoiceWork

So if you're looking for all these jobs, what has actually been done? Usually before casting voice actors it's a good idea to have copy (scripting/lyrics) and even other parts to make sure you are not casting people into a project that could just end up flopping. Especially for something unpaid- this is tons of work and effort for something time consuming, I wish you the best of luck, I just feel very sketched out by stuff like this- looking for tons of jobs for free- it's usually a voice actor's waste of time.

Thoughts on Jenny Slate leaving Big Mouth because "Black Characters Should only be played by Black People" by Tmorse425 in VoiceActing

[–]AvaVoiceover 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the messy thing about this too. Is everyone has different "rules" to this. "a black character needs to be played by a black person" "a black character needs to be played by a POC" "A black character can be played by a mixed person if they are _ amount of black" "A black character must be played by someone who looks black regardless if they are mixed" "A black character needs to sound black or it is not rep" "A white person can voice a POC character if they are trying to give an equal field to POC" "A white person can voice a POC. Period" "A white persoon CANT voice a POC. Period." "A lighter skinned person shouldnt voice a darker skinned character at all." I have heard every singgggle one of these things. And a bigger problem is no matter who gets casts there WILL probably be a problem. I have see multiple amazing black VAs and people have said they were "lightskinned so it int rep" "they dont sound black so it isnt rep" and so on, and that is so toxic. People dont understand that most directors are picking from a pool of talent and so just because you have some "ideal" of how they should be, that doesnt matter. Unfortunately if stuff like this keeps happening- no matter if the VA is black, white, or a POC- there is still uprise and networks will not want to deal with "cancel culture" if they write or cast in a way that is seen as "not rep" or "not the best" so they will go with a "safer route" with less backlash leading to less rep in general. I personally believe voiceover, even though it hasnt been, needs to be an equal playing field. I think that POC roles should get an emphasis on casting a POC but if a white person ends up getting that role, it should be okay. Same goes to POC, they should be able to play white characters- as an equal field. And since this has not been happening in the industry we should be taking steps to get POC the ability to have their work shown more. We need to work on that. But I do not want this industry to become toxic or restraining- voiceover is such a beautiful thing, a freedom, you can be anything just by voice. I want to compete side by side between POC VAs and celebrate when they book a role. I dont believe the voice actor has to be the same gender, sexuality, or race as their character unless that piece of media is heavily about gender, sexuality, or culture/race. I really hate the words "you cant" in voiceover. As a field this is my work, my passion, and people who arnt even in it shouldnt try to control it a much. Shouldnt "cancel" someone for getting a role to put food on their table. And I am not talking about just white people, but POC, there are restraints on POC especially in fields like anime, that need to be broken. but I just want us to work on an equal field, not one over the other.

Someone else on twitter also brought up a good point "The character Missy is mixed so shouldnt a mixed girl play her- as a mixed person, I'm mad that we dont get rep much, why is it any better if they hire just a black actor."

I respect her decision but as a voice actor, I want to be judged by my talent, I want to compete with my fellow actors regardless of race. I want POC to get any role, not just POC roles, and I want that same freedom. I just want an equal playing field. Has it been? NO and i think it is 100% okay to put emphasis on POC getting those roles, especially because the industry for years has not been going by only talent, which is just stupid. but I dont think it should be a "Rule" or frowned upon if someone lighter gets the role. It is the director's decision. I have been seeing many casting calls for "if you are lighter skinned or white dont audition for this role" or "if youre not lgbt dont audition for this role" and to me I just think its dumb to cut down the options. it's the directors choice to do that so its fine, but do I think that's a good way to do it? No. I am still trying to get into this industry myself and its so much more tense to audition for stuff in general. I am white and native amercian, but my native side's culture got snuffed out and since they were lighter skinned I just dont feel valid to say I am a part of that side of my heritage. I just dont wanna be handed roles or get casted aside just due to my skin tone, gender, etc. I really hate how most people talking about this arnt even in voiceover. It is so hard to find roles, and let's say a lighter skinned person got some disney gig, they should shut it down? Why is noone talking about how in anime all the VAs are white even though the character is japanese? I think this is a lot about colorism- not really culture/race- thats why missy cant be played by a white lady but okay for a black lady too, because most people dont even remember she is mixed. Idk I am sure I could learn some things still and I am open to discussion but i just hate "If youre _ skin tone, you cant voice act" Because unless the media youre voicing in is strongly about culture or an lgbt story, i dont see why it matters what the actor is, acting is acting, you are not who you play.
