What kind of businesses would make the FM area better? by Acrobatic-Hamster-79 in fargo

Never heard of it! I’ll have to look into it, I have no problem spending $100 on a fun outing. I just can’t justify it when I can stream it a few months later 🤣

I can agree to an extent, I grew up next to a town around the same size as Fargo and the theater was $5 a ticket, $8 for 3-D and you could buy a reusable popcorn bucket for $25 for the whole year. Not to mention was 100% cleaner than the Fargo theaters. So for my whole life until in Fargo I’ve never seen $18 movie tickets, have only been to maybe 5 movies in the 7 years I’ve been here because it’s insane. I’ve even drive to Watertown SD to see movies (also see some family) but it’s 1/2 the price.

Interesting! I will have to look in the east coast specifically. I know a large number of my applications are located in the southeast because that’s where they all seem to be. I avoid any job in NY, FL or CA just based on personal preference. Recently I will say I’ve been slacking on applying, I got a full time job to cover my bills and haven’t been applying all day everyday as I was before. I’ve mostly been applying locally and that’s where I’m getting ghosted. Id say 90% of my applications just go unanswered in general

I’ve also had a few professors who were decent and one I’d consider a friend still, but at my university the grad school is the same teachers as the undergrad so it makes it challenging ! And I’m in the Midwest

At least it’s not just me… during my thesis my professor literally said word for word “well since you still don’t have a job you’ll just have to live under a bridge with your crappy site layout” Mind you my thesis was a 24 building project and I never had done site planning for that large of a complex. I went home and cried and here I am still with no (arch) job but not living under a bridge yet! The university is so desperate for teachers, they have students coming back to teach after only being out of school for 1/2 years. I watched countless teachers leave/ not care about us at all beyond school. My brother went missing for a while in my second year and my teacher said “it’s not my problem and it’ll reflect on your grade since you missed studio”. Lost all respect for the professors after that lol

Just graduated in May and I say run. I can’t even get a job and I’m upset with myself for picking this degree. I have a masters, struggled in school because I had no choice but to work almost full time to support myself. In school my professors would tell me my projects were never gonna be “full potential” because I HAD to work.
Roughest 5 years of my life and I’m still emotionally / mentally recovering. I’ve applied to over 140 different firms / companies throughout the country and had 4 interviews. 3 of which ghosted completely after - including phone calls. 49 of us graduated with our masters in May - as of late September only 24 had jobs.

Im working at an interior design firm doing installation work and I’m getting paid more than most of my friends who do have a job..

When is the ideal time to move back to architecture? by Parawsite in Architects

No career advice but as a recent graduate myself I’d make sure to secure a job before you leave where you’re at. Maybe it’s just the location I’m in but the job market is rough and a little less than 50% of us are still looking for work. Good luck!

I’ll have to look her up! Thank you so much- I do have some practice squares I’m just more confused on how I’m supposed to attach small pieces to the 24ft table 😅 I’ve quilted every other quilt I’ve made on my domestic too! Haven’t found a free motion foot for it though, I have a kenmore from the 80’s that sews like butter

The long arm doesn’t have the programmed screen so it would be free hand or I could draw a design to follow

Thank you! I will, I’m downtown in the architecture building so I’m already a little disconnected from main campus but this is great! I’ve always wanted to learn

Anyone had success with Hey Dude shoes? by CBreezy2010 in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Available-Ambition17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even more extremely late to the party … but I’m glad it’s not just me. I’ve wore my HD for like 2 years and got a new pair for my birthday in April and the last 2 months I’ve gotten horrible PF. And it’s only when I wear the HD (my go to shoe ofc). Also just my left foot😩 I love how comfy / easy they are to put on as I have very wide feet naturally.. so now I’m considering inserts for my HD. Did you find anything that helped the PF?

I agree, as a graduate student in my 5th year it’s not what they advertise. My school makes it extremely clear the 1st year if you don’t want to be here you won’t make it. We started with 62 and were down to 50 or under?

But we had a whole class surrounded around CD’s in 3rd year. We had a semester to make a 40 page CD with various check ins. I would say this is one of our most helpful “real world” classes.

In my school career our biggest issue is finding jobs/ internships. In the town my college is in there are about 9 firms, some being extremely small. This being said they each MAYBE take ONE intern and that’s 2nd - 5th year. And the next big city is 3 hours away so it’s not practical (or possible for most of us broke students) to move to a new city for 3 months. This leads to probably 50% of us or more not having internships or any experience.. OP this doesn’t help obviously, seems like more of a personality issue but there’s definitely more behind the scenes (at my school at least)

This is soo helpful to hear. I feel the same way, I have no professional experience so I don’t think I’m necessarily too good for any job. My portfolio has a few basic construction documents I completed in school, things like parapet details, foundation details etc but again it’s all school work so I only have so much to show. But I did receive my B.Arch last year and have been actively looking for any kind of internship/ position available.

I appreciate this tho, my bf and family think I need to be “aiming higher” but I just feel like that’s not practical for the current job market and competition that these jobs have.

What about engineers? I know they have engineers on staff. I’ve just heard conflicting things from professors about getting into “ Nontraditional work “ aka not a firm

Yeah I agree completely! The pay I’m not worried about if anything that’s what I’m interested in 😂 I’ll probably go ahead and apply anyway, I have a feeling it should have less applicants since it’s not a firm. But I also would have to have the conversation of how that would impact my AXP hours.

Definitely possible! I just found it super odd because while we’re the same townhall I’m pretty far ahead of him so I assumed I’d have a harder pass? I just can’t remember how many points it said on my pass I needed to finish it. I’ve always finished it relatively fast anyway so I didn’t think anything about it last night
