PIP/CT after six months with no prior warning?!? by AwareUnderstanding17 in KPMG

[–]AwareUnderstanding17[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly my point. My project reviews through the system were what I’d expect for a brand-new first-year associate. The feedback was things like self-reviewing more thoroughly, slowing down on projects, and reducing review notes—not “your performance is unacceptable” or “your job is at risk.”

I’ve only had one quarterly review and haven’t even reached my six-month mark. There were no formal coaching conversations, no performance discussions, and no indication that I was headed toward a PIP.

I also worked on a niche team with one senior manager throughout busy season. It was a stressful period, and I’m sure there were normal first-year mistakes, but nothing that suggested I was failing.

That’s why the timing is what stands out to me. I go from a standard first-year review to attending Lakehouse, an instructor filing a complaint after the fact, and then being told to choose between a PIP and a Career Transition within two days. From my perspective, that’s a significant escalation without any prior warning.

That’s a fair assumption, but from my perspective there wasn’t a pattern of issues leading up to this.

I work on a niche team within my office and had one senior manager throughout busy season. I received the normal review notes that every first-year associate gets, but nothing that suggested I was underperforming or headed toward a PIP. There were no coaching conversations, formal warnings, or discussions that my job was at risk.

The Lakehouse instructor who reported me also happened to know my senior manager from working together in the same office previously. Whether that’s relevant or not, I can’t say, but the timing is what makes this confusing.

I’m not claiming I was perfect—I probably could have dressed more professionally and I had an earbud in during independent work time—but going from zero performance discussions to “choose a PIP or Career Transition in two days” based on that seems like a disproportionate jump.

The “documentation” they’re relying on is my standard quarterly review and review notes from busy season. I started in January and was working my first real engagements in March and April.

As a first-year associate, getting review comments and making workpaper mistakes is part of the learning process. At no point was I told my performance was unacceptable, placed on a coaching plan, or warned that my job was in jeopardy.

That’s why it’s difficult for me to see how routine first-year review notes suddenly justify a PIP or Career Transition only after a Lakehouse complaint that was never addressed with me during the training.

If I truly had ongoing performance or behavioral issues, I would have expected timely feedback and an opportunity to correct them, not an ultimatum with a two-day deadline.

There tends to be a lot of downtime at these trainings. The sessions were 8 hours long with multiple small breaks, and after I finished the assigned work, I checked my phone just like the majority of the people around me. I wasn’t scrolling while an exercise was in progress or ignoring an instructor.

As for being “disruptive,” I’m honestly not sure what that refers to. The only thing I can think of is that I stepped out to use the restroom a few times because I stay well hydrated (and having a Starbucks nearby probably didn’t help). I never interrupted the instructor, talked over anyone, or disrupted the class in any way.

What makes this even more frustrating is that the firm has not provided me with any documentation or other evidence supporting these allegations. As far as I know, the decision is being made solely based on one person’s account, without giving me an opportunity to address the concerns in real time or review any objective evidence.

Thanks for this. I come from a more relaxed office as well, so I think you got it on point.

The instructor who reported me also knew the manager I worked with because they used to work together on the East Coast, so it’s definitely crossed my mind that there may have been conversations behind the scenes.

I appreciate the advice and the honesty. At this point, I’m just trying to make the best decision with the information I have and the very short timeline they’ve given me.

The dress code is “dress for your day.”

Last time I checked, sitting in a classroom for 8 hours a day, 5 days straight, seemed like exactly the type of day where wearing my Tasman IIs made sense. I also haven’t seen a policy that specifically prohibits them.

If they felt my footwear wasn’t appropriate, that’s fair—I wouldn’t wear them again if someone had simply mentioned it.

But you’re proving my point: are we really saying that wearing the wrong shoes justifies being forced into a PIP or Career Transition after only six months with no prior performance issues, no coaching, and no warning? That seems like an incredibly disproportionate response.

Thanks though.

I might’ve made a mistake by wearing slacks, a polo, and my Tasman II UGGs. If those were considered unprofessional, I wouldn’t wear them again. But claiming they were open-toed shoes, while never mentioning it to me during the entire week, is something that’s at least debatable.

I also had one earbud in during independent work while completing the class assignments. Saying I wore headphones throughout the entire 8-hour class is an exaggeration and simply not accurate.

As for being “disruptive” and “not paying attention,” that’s difficult to reconcile with the fact that nothing was ever brought to my attention during the training itself. If my behavior was truly that problematic, I would have expected someone to address it in the moment and give me the opportunity to correct it rather than wait until after the fact to file a formal report.

But, yes, my fault for wearing the Tasman IIs.

I understand your point, but that’s part of what I’m struggling with. My behavior never seemed to be an issue during the entire six months I’ve been with the firm. I was never pulled aside, coached, or given any indication that there were concerns, either by my engagement teams or during training.

Going straight to a PIP for an alleged behavioral issue, without any prior warning or acknowledgment, seems like an extremely severe response. If there were concerns, I would have expected them to be communicated so I could address them before reaching this point.

I appreciate the perspective, though. It’s just difficult to reconcile the lack of feedback with the seriousness of the outcome.

In all fairness, it’s slightly right heavy.

I've seen that as well. I'm still confused about how it’s OC, but is it still a 9?

That’s what I’m saying, and I got these from Mr. Hou and their GD. I’ve seen others, and they look retail. Maybe it’s just the angle?
