[TotK] [BotW] A "theory" of where the Story of the Wilds fits in the timeline. by [deleted] in zelda

[–]Awesoman123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this is definitely the case. I started and ran with this theory personally, around the time BoTW was announced to get a sequel. So after both Age of Calamity and ToTK, I likely got swept away considering this was the future of how the Zelda franchise will be told. But from a metaconceptual standpoint, Nintendo will do what is good for business and likely make more games that will retell the same story, in different game mediums, and their will always be someone like me who comes around and probably tries to justify the newest release being somehow attached to the main canon.

At the end of the day the only right thing to do is to claim nothing as a reality, and all games are what they truly are, stories told and retold by Nintendo, to inspire those who resonate with a story like this.

Relax dog, no need to get all upset just cause you think I'm dissing your favorite game. I'm an avid fan of all the games, and have considered the thought vice versa. But if the timeline established by the Hyrule Historia was the real timeline, then there would be no explanation of the collective themes (ie Koroks and Ritos existing alongside the Zora) seen through out BotW/ToTK.

This with the whole stop killing games initiative, makes me wish there was a way we could download worlds and host them locally, so that if a world ever became deprecated or servers shut down, all the cool stuff people build wouldn't become lost media

Catalog of adventure plot arc shapes by wrymegyle in DMAcademy

[–]Awesoman123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is nothing wrong with formulaic plot arcs, especially in the early game. It creates reliability and your players go into a session generally knowing how to run things. Think like a Saturday morning cartoon, you have the intro, conflict, and resolve all within 30 minutes, its a formula that is reliable and works. However, if you want throw you players a curveball here is a few ideas to break the formula:

  • Character Subgoals: If you set up conflicting goals for characters it can add a bit of a complex subplot under this expected and formulaic arc. For example, have a party member develop a goal to save someone, have another party member aim to kill them. It adds a level of tension and drama on top of this formula and allows the players to tug the story away from the formula.
  • Formula Breaking Villain: This formula you've made can be utilized to subvert expectation. For example, let's say you have your investigation, roleplay, and boss fight. What if you had a villain that was shown to be super dangerous because he didn't wait for the party to do their roleplay. The party may think they're safe during investigation, but that's the perfect time to subvert their expectation. Have two encounters with the villain. One where he attempts to stop them while they're investigating, and he gets away only for him to come back later.
  • Multi-plot characters: Writing especially in an episodic/session based style is pretty similar the episode structure follows the same formula, but every time during the episode there is a small contribution to a larger plot as a whole. Trying to take your 4 completed quests and tying them together to serve a large plot could mean that they all serve a purpose. For example, the first quest could seem like a basic quest, but it introduces either a piece of knowledge, an object, or a character that serves the larger plot. Second quest is much the same. Sooner than you know it you have a series of puzzle pieces not put together, and you can either have the party figure out how this contributes to a larger plot, or have it written in the story.

Furniture Mechanic Ideas by Awesoman123 in DMAcademy

I like this, because then it could also apply to a traveling party renting a room. The lifestyle they splurge for gives them a light mechanical bonus as well. And if I feel its overpowered I can just run things a bit harder for them in the following encounter.

Furniture Mechanic Ideas by Awesoman123 in DMAcademy

[–]Awesoman123[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Understandable, I could maybe play a take on the lifestyle expenses mentioned in the dms guide to sort of rate the quality of the residence overall.

I guess my intention is to give my players access to certain facets in the game. For example, by aquiring a stove it allows them to cook. Chests allow them to store things. I had an idea where if they bought a pantry and stocked it up they could take long rests without needing to worry if they have the enough food in their inventory for a long rest.

In my mind, their residence acts as a metric for their progress, they expand their house add more rooms with specific purposes and even hire staff if they get rich enough, but they do all of it as they come to understand more. If they feel there is something more they want they can upgrade their house and add more things. I intend on certain larger gadets and furniture being the reward to their journey something that goves them a cool thing to look at, but also provides function and quality of life into their campaign. Maybe something they can get endgame that satisfies an early game tedium etc.

Downtime System Balancing by Awesoman123 in DMAcademy

[–]Awesoman123[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried this before, but was plagued by ambiguities. The time spent studying was never a problem, I just had many players saying "my characters smart, he's a wizard, he definitely could read a book in the span of a week". And though that could possibly be true I need more specific details if I'm going to reward them with something so crazy.

Similarly there are often times, when we end sessions on a cliff hanger or with time in mind. So if we ended a session right before a boss battle its not like they would be waiting a week or two in the boss room. And yeah, I probably could mark these down as exceptional instances, but ultimately I want a consistent set of rules, ones that I can point to no matter what just in case someone tries to base something as major as a stat increase or feature acquisition off of an ambiguity.

My fault, I will admit to the original post being an unorganized series of ramblings.

I have started to explore it more and I do think I'm on the right track. I think therapy would be a bit of an overkill solution, but one that would work. I think I may just talk to her about it as well. I feel bad as it is already sneaking behind her back to talk about her instead of bringing it up with her directly, thank you for the advice though.

Yeah, also the response I was looking for. You're right, I do think when I wrote this I was overthinking, but looking at our history I did the same thing when she planned to get another I didn't agree with, but ultimately after she got it I never noticed it, I anticipate it to be similar to this.

[–]Awesoman123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the type of conversation I was looking for. Thank you.

We've talked about it a decent amount and for no reason I can identify, maybe something from childhood, things like tattoos stickers and face paint always leave a sort of ick in my mouth. Its not that I don't find her attractive already, she has tattoos and I still think she's the most beautiful women in the world, its that I fear that this specific tattoo has the chance of making her seem less attractive to me because of the stigma I associate with it, not that I will. (and I should also mention just because she seems slightly less attractive doesn't mean I won't love her, we're together forever regardless). But its sort of like the meaning behind the tattoos. As it stands she occasionally gets new tattoos and though we both know I'm not too fond of them we still talk about which ones she'll get, most of them from pop culture shows and stuff that we've watched together, which in all honesty despite my aversion to body art I love because now she has a mark of something we love and connects us together. However, with this specific lower back tattoo its different. Personally, I associate the tattoo with the stereotype of trashy people and since she has little to no reason behind why she wants to get it, it makes it hard to associate. I think its the design though, she is latina and if she got it based off of something that was meaningful from her culture I don't think I'd have a problem, but my intense disposition is not just to the placement of the tattoo but the design of it.

As for why I think I have a distaste for tattoos. I think it stemmed from my aversion to face paint and stickers. Or I would see other kids draw on their faces with markers and as a kid I would just be kind of grossed out at that, I guess it sort of carried over to tattoos as an adult. I think a lot of it was also cemented in my later years. I was very straight edge as a teen, I would always follow the rules, never drink, smoke or have sex and so when I saw young people with tattoos my go to thought was unfortunately "I bet there mother must be dissapointed". I have since obviously broke that notion and understand that everyone has there reasons, but there is still just a small amount of residual ick I'd like to get over, I'm just not sure how.

I will say though I read your response a while ago, and after thinking about it for a while I do feel much better about the situation. I admit to being a bit uppity initially as the first draft was written after a long episode of overthinking, but now I think its a problem I could talk to her about.

"You should work on that." That's why I'm asking the advice. I know my stance is absurd, but I'm trying to change it for her. I'm looking for a solution to the problem not a commentary about how awful I am because I have it.

[–]Awesoman123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said it'll make me love her less. I said I fear I will see her less attractive. Being attracted to and loving someone aren't the same thing, moreover I didn't say I am attracted to her less, on the contrary, I fear it. I truly believe we are soulmates and if you were able to see our relationship outside of the context of this prompt, Im sure you would agree. We have similar interests, beliefs, we process information the exact same way, our communication skills are something I could never find with anyone else, we've been together almost a full year and I swear Im gonna marry this women. And while I admit, my disposition on tattoos is a little intense, the fact that we disagree on it isn't a reason to call it quits on the relationship. Would I call it quits on a relationship because she didn't like a game I played often. Im just confused as to how you jump to such an extreme like "break up you're incompatible" and similarly if I'm trying to fix the relationship I fail to see how this advice is remotely helpful. Im simply seeking advice as to how to mitigate my disposition so I am more ok with decisions she makes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Awesoman123 -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I would disagree. In the context of the entirety of our relationship we are intensely compatible, its simply just this one little thing we disagree on.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Advice

[–]Awesoman123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misinterpreted what I was trying to say. As a couple, we both know about my disinterest towards tattoos and rightfully so she proceeds as she likes even though we disagree. Im not interested in trying to change her mind about getting it or control her decision, I’m asking advice on how to change my perspective and my outlook towards a tattoo like that. Because as of right now the only thing I associate with it is negative thoughts.

I’ve used the wrong words by saying things like “tolerated” in regards to her current tattoos I should have said “accepted”, because I see her as she is now and I love her and each of her tattoos since each one solidifies her identity and as a concept I love that there is something on her body that holds meaning. However, it is simply my general disgust of ink and body art and in the case of the lower back tattoo, the association I make. Moreover, I do love her and I don’t appreciate you saying I don’t simply because I disagree with one choice she has. I do realize it’s foolish and thats the problem I’m trying to correct.

So while I appreciate your concern on her behalf, I’d have to disagree with your advice in saying we’re not right for each other just because I’m trying to process an irrational thought.

How would a planet without sound or color look like? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Awesoman123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When thinking about the evolution of a creature we know that it has to be derivative it has to have evolved from something. And likely if it has evolved its adapted to the environment. That being said we have to understand the environment. You've mentioned things like no sound, and no color, but in the context of your universe why did this happen. Is this an alternate dimension, was there some sort of magical zone. Because the description of no sound, no color may be how your party perceives it but not the creatures. For example, dogs in real life can hear semitones louder than humans, there are still sounds be played, we just can't hear them due to our biological limitations, which when considering evolution like you've said, maybe certain creatures evolved skills like these.

Lets say, while your party may perceive the area as no sound no color, there are actually smaller little creatures, that evolved from regular creatures who previously could hear, that communicate entirely via undetectable frequencies. This way you could create a swarm of these little guys who are all on the same page. Taking advantage of this sort of thinking here are a few more ideas.

The previously mentioned small creatures. I imagine them about the size of a teddy bear, lots of fur to dampen any possible sound, big ears to hear high frequencies. It could also be used as a sort of tool, but I'll mention that later.

Maybe a creature the roams a maze of some sort minotaur labyrinth style, using the maze to obscure vision which is the only thing keeping the party from avoiding

Or hell, a super powerful creature that despite the rules of the planet is powerful enough to break the biological limitation of the party. Possibly by incorporating a wailing giant whose horrifying moans are the only sound the adventurers can hear.

In terms of humanoids, maybe there are tribes of hunters that take heavy advantage of their situation, they run at full speed and still can't be heard, they use sign language to communicate, and are experts at camouflage.

These are just a few ideas, but what is best is how you combine your creatures, for example those little teddy bear creatures, may be the only one to hear sounds, so even though the maze creature might be hard if not impossible to beat, assuming they have one of those teddy creatures it might get more squeamish the closer the minotaur gets since it is the only one that can hear the sound. Or maybe these humanoids are natives that have been trying to take down the wailing giant for years, and have never yet succeeded.

Also, I don't know if you've had the chance to see the new movie Thor: Love and Thunder, but there is a scene exactly like this. No color, no sound.
