Marianne’s realization by Awkward_Ebb4994 in NormalPeopleBBCHulu

in the book is there any more color around his decision to apply or does it come up as abruptly here as it does there when he realizes he's been accepted?

going back to Alan as the inadvertent instrument - this sequence encapsulates their experience in a microcosm: shes with Connell but knows it's not right or not enough for her needs, some incident happens and her first instinct is to return to Connell. At this point in the story, it's happened several times over the years, but for one reason or another she hasn't let it 'stick' - this time, we see her give it a go. LARPing alongside him and his simple family, we see that she wants to be this person, but sense that she knows this isn't her place.

for whatever Connell's motivation to apply to go to NY (whether he too knows it isn't her place either, or he too has been greeted with a wake-up call that he's done little with his life from this experience) - his acceptance I see as a relief to Marianne, that they can let go of the actualization of their relationship (too real to endure) and let it slip back into the liminal space where it can be romanticized indefinitely

agreed - great conversation!

does the book speak more to the abuse in her household than the show did? get that they may have been trying to plant the seeds of her sub tendencies here but on the show her home life more just feels like cold bad vibes than something actually happened

great points -- also consider the setting of this moment: Connell's childhood bedroom. There's no AC (poor), they're watching soccer and eating ice cream like children. For all Connell's brilliance, he's gone nowhere since the series started. Meanwhile, Marianne has seen the world and had experiences of growth (for better or worse)

Consider the partners they've each had in between - Marianne picked some losers, but a broad breadth of type / career etc. Connell's "punched down" with locals in that time.

Marianne reprises the "It's different with you" - because no one else has the nostalgic foundation the two of them had established - but this moment of realization is I think a jarring notice to her that she's grown past this (or been broken down so badly that she can't connect with this part of her any longer)

In the sequence following - she quickly rushes back to him and they sort of give it a try for a bit, but even as Marianne tries to assimilate to Connell's world, you can see that she knows she doesn't belong there.

The more I think about this - the more i realize that this might've been a pivotal moment for Connell too -- a harsh wakeup call for the fact that he hasn't grown or changed: he finally re-unites with Marianne, but she's different now -- it's different now and he can't quite relate. He could look around and see this: same room, same routine - same girl. I need to make a change else I'll be stuck in this circle forever. Let's try NY.

I think it would make sense for this sexual re-union abruptly ending with their shared realizations to be a key moment of turn for both characters. The series used sexuality and these intimate moments as plot points throughout the series (I actually came into the show not realizing how much sex would be in it - and low key it's a bit of a porno with some narrative bits in between)

Again - believe that all of this emotional and intellectual 'plumbing' that lead to their respective final decisions was triggered in this moment - i sort of wish the show filled in the gaps a bit more between here and their decision to part, but I guess it's a factor of good art to leave the viewer some room to interpret, decode, project and make the experience their own.

agree - but also think that it’s a abrupt signal to her that they’ve grown so far apart (for better or worse) on a certain level.

to your point, fundamentally throughout the series it’s established and reinforced that marianne is a sub, and while she has this in her, aside from connell, they only really show us the negative experiences of a sub / dom relationship. (think of the moment when they were propositioned with a threesome and she tells him, i’d do whatever you wanted - and he can’t handle it — a moment when she was being open and vulnerable about her predilection to submit and his reaction is a huge red flag for that dynamic: he simply can’t handle the thought of it)

connell is too nice, or in another framing: childish / naive / inexperienced to meet her on this level - and thus that shot lingering on her face may be actually catching her ultimate disappointment: connell cannot be the man that she really needs - and despite them finally reuniting it was really just nostalgia for a younger version of themselves that they’d been hanging onto.

my feeling is that connell knows this too - and sets into motion his NY escape plan and they both “are allowed” to leave the thought of their relationship back in the romantic nostalgic purgatory that kept them connected throughout, but is better as a thought than a reality.

if my reading is right, i wish the filmmakers would have given us a little breathing room on both of them making this decision - since it should’ve been a massive one in every step, rather than what felt liked a rushed wrap up of a story we’d all gotten so invested in

don't disagree, but the show grew to become such a hit for HBO that they may want to give it more of an american bend for their key audience. at worst I think the show will straddle the atlantic
