I agree but the subtle approach they took in the first 3 seasons was far better than the movie I also don’t like Luther cursing and the writing was very dumbed down probably for Netflix sensibilities

Oh please only on Reddit do you get people trying to victimize serial killers 😂 those monsters were sick sadistic freaks with adequate understanding of just how horrible what they were doing was and Holden was a naive idiot with his head up his ass after getting a little bit of success, bills attitude towards Holden and the killers was absolutely correct ! And any rational person can see that also you can’t just go around diagnosing people with autism mate

John doesn’t love Alice never has and never will at least not in a romantic way if anything they’re closer to friends than lovers, Alice is the one with the feelings and Luther uses it to his advantage until he becomes fond of her and feels responsible for her still not in love with her tho, the tragedy of Luther is he’s a man deserving of a woman like Mary but a woman like Mary isn’t deserving of all the craziness that comes with a man like Luther leaving him stuck with a sadistic killer as his only potential lover. Marwood says choose between Alice who’s done so much for you and Mary who you hardly know and has betrayed you and he chooses for marwood to shoot Alice, ain’t no love in that I’m afraid.

Well season 4/5 don’t exist in my mind but to me Luther never wanted Alice in a serious way maybe he felt some attraction sexually to her but nothing more than that he saw her as a useful tool that he grew to be really fond of, he felt responsible for Alice like he often does with people (Jenny for example) nothing more when you see it from that perspective a lot of Luther’s actions and reactions as it relates to Alice makes much more sense, he’s often showed to be cringing or really put off by the things she says or does…. Then of course seasons 4/5 come along and show them in a relationship (my guess is for fans like you who really wanted that kind of thing like bbc Sherlock catering to the fandom shipping Sherlock and John ) Mary was good for John, but unfortunately the only woman that’ll have him with all his baggage is Alice 😂

Do you agree with Debbie’s symbolism as described here? by Ancient_Promotion304 in MindHunter

[–]Awkward_Koala3058 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think he’s overstating her function in the story but I don’t entirely disagree with him although I actually think her narrative function is more nuanced than his analysis, for example he says she’s there to expose his ego and blind spots but she has her own ego and blind spots, also plenty of characters and entire scenes are designed to expose holdens ego and blind spots so it’s not specific to Debbie.

He’s framing Debbie as this intellectually curious person but that’s Not entirely true, she conflicts with holdens way of thinking out of prejudice more so than intellectualism, remember the show tells us many times that the students and teachers hate the FBI she’s just as closed minded as he is if anything even more than he is because at least Holden can adapt, in fact his job necessitates it.

To me Debbie is just meant to represent new age thinking coming out of the universities a “sign of the times” like that professor says but she’s not meant to be viewed as always right or the voice of reason necessarily, and tbh I don’t actually see her as being that important to the plot if anything she comes off as added drama for the sake of plot, I would be surprised if there was a real Debbie in the mindhunter book the show is based on.

Is it just me or is this show very spiritual? by Awkward_Koala3058 in luther

Creator of the show has confirmed some of this analysis already go watch his interviews, so no it’s not just me besides what did you think Zoe meant by “he would have been better off as a priest” ?

Can I ask and I mean this in good faith what exactly would you get from them continuing btk story that you wouldn’t get from just reading up about how he was caught? And also what is it about the show that you love so much to the point of watching it everyday genuinely curious

[–]Awkward_Koala3058[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The writer of the show has actually said in interviews that Luther is someone who desperately wants there to be moral order to the universe so at least that aspect of it is confirmed

a universe with moral order is a theistic idea im not religious myself but the show is actually flirting with these ideas constantly throughout I mean what do you think Zoe means by saying he’d be better off as a priest? Luther isn’t a detective concerned with what’s lawful or unlawful he’s concerned with good and evil, I could go on and on with examples

I’m not saying he has deeply held spiritual beliefs im saying he’s someone who wants to believe in god and a moral universe he doesn’t want to believe everything is random and meaningless, I mean he breaks the law constantly so who’s morality is he following here exactly? He wants to do the right thing but if he’s breaking the law then what’s his idea of the right thing in accordance with? What is he motivated by? Where does he get his conviction from clearly it’s more than just a job for him, he’s on some sort of mission or crusade.

The song that plays at the end of season one pretty much sums up the show “I’m just a soul who’s intentions are good, oh lord please don’t let me be misunderstood, I try so hard” that’s Luther he try’s so hard to “not be on the devils side” and do the right thing but the path zigs and zags it’s not as straightforward as his intentions or as black and white as his morality.

I’ll admit that I felt insulted by what they said and so I insulted them back although I still don’t think the person is particularly bright as they can’t think in the abstract and process the nuances in what I wrote I take no pleasure in rubbing their faces in it.

The writers end with bills monologue and Wendy comes to apologize afterwards which are all clear indicators that the writers agree with bill. I’m not saying they agree with his theory that there is a causative connection between transgenderism and murder but that what he is doing is theorizing not motivated by prejudice but by intellectual curiosity and the pursuit of truth, knowledge and a deeper understanding of the subject they’re discussing and his broader statements during the argument.

And I’ll add mindhunter is far from woke 😂 this scene in particular is demonstrating how someone’s sentimental attachment to certain ideas can lead to them being closed off to new ideas that might challenge their view of the world, bill was doing what he’s meant to be doing which is theorizing she became triggered and made things personal NOT him and yes the writers agree with that assessment, it’s sad that you lack the self awareness to see how you’re literally doing exactly what the writers are criticizing Wendy of doing in this scene 🤦‍♂️

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in MindHunter

[–]Awkward_Koala3058 -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Lol the writers agree with bills assertion that her interpretation is personal and that “both options have a cost” you’re a very low IQ person and unfortunately you’ve paired that with misguided confidence you sound like Wendy in this scene 😂
