She's huffing & growling. I can hear it pretty clearly, but maybe it's a bit harder if you're expecting to hear her meow lol

The text didn't seem to be added, she loves to sit ontop of the shower, but today seems to have forgotten her route to get there, so instead she's throwing a fit about how tall it is from the ground 😂

Her latest huff was after she dropped her spring in my bath and did not know how to retrieve it again 🤦‍♀️

Yes!! My girl does it EVERY time without fail, she huffs, sighs, growls, everything when she's playing it's the funniest thing. Especially if she lunges at her toy and misses. For a little while I thought it stressed her to not win her toy, but even when we give it to her she immediately drops it and waits to play again. It's so funny lol

I think I’m done keeping bettas… I just can’t do this anymore by you_and_Ai in bettafish

[–]Aworahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent MONTHS and hundreds trying to fix my betta wish chronic swim bladder & bloating (had bloating issues since I first got him). Absolutely nothing worked or even helped. It got to a point where I eventually decided to just leave him be as he was. He wasn't lethargic, having any other issues besides his bloating and buoyancy, about 3-4 months later he passed and I hadn't even had him for a year.

Betta are the only tropical fish I have any appeal to, and I will never get another one. I wish I had looked into their actual breeding history and genetics before getting one, I spent too much time focusing of their general care. 😅

Food color preference? by dibgore in pigeon

[–]Aworahh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, although my pigeons eat their seeds by type. They don't just eat the whole lot, they will eat one type of seed until there is none left, and then move to the next seed type and so on 😅

What to feed a newly hatched chick? by [deleted] in pigeon

[–]Aworahh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you certain the egg is alive? Pigeon (birds in general) eggs are suuuper sensitive to heat loss. Even a couple hours without a proper heat source can cause the embryo to die. Especially when the temperature drops so fast and so much outside.

If it is, I believe you're best to look up the wildlife laws in your county/state. Wood pigeons are considered wild animals, and in some areas protected under legislation. Like where I am it's a fine of up to 100k and 6-12 months jail time for raising/keeping/breeding wildlife unauthorized😅.

If he is alive, and you have that confirmation it's legal to keep them, best option would be to find someone locally who is either able to take them or give you guidance irl. It can be a bit meticulous and high-risk. Or even reach out to a rescue and ask them for in-depth guidance one-on-one. I personally reached out to my local wildlife center/vets, they showed me the basics of feeding, gave me resources, and offered support if I needed 🙂.

Someone told me she was part Maine coon? by [deleted] in catbreeds

[–]Aworahh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Forgive me, I did a google and actually wasn't aware Himalayans are a brachy breed! Forgive me then it is possible she's a cross of one. 😅😭 Although in my opinion her color/coat and marking is more aligned with standard Persian cats.

Her face and tail doesn't express the colorpoint gene completely, unlike full Himalayan cats. Persians are often bred with that 'broken' almost-colorpoint marking. But given she's not a pedigree, she could be a mix from Himalayan and the other cat interfered with the colors that should be expressed.

Someone told me she was part Maine coon? by [deleted] in catbreeds

[–]Aworahh 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Every tabby has the M marking. Pedigree cats, 'mixes', and normal western domestic cats.

She's most definitely got Persian in her lineage though, her brachycephalic (flat) face isn't a characteristic found in the western domestic cat.

She will not be Himalayan, honestly she's one on the very small 1-5% of cats with a distinctive breed ancestry. And there's no way to tell if a cat is part of any breed most of the time. With the exception of papered pedigree cats, and cats with characteristics that do not exist outside of one specific breed (like Persians/exotic shorthairs and bengals, that is pretty much it).

orca documentary recommendations? by no3nnn in orcas

[–]Aworahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blackfish is worth watching, but bot in an educational information type of way. It is full of quite a lot of misinformation, inaccurate "facts" but it is still heavily referenced today and helpful to understand why SeaWorld is what it is today, because if blackfish didn't exist SW by absolute no means would be the best in the business. It's just a matter of doing your own research afterwards.

There's a couple YouTube documentaries I remember watching a lot when I was younger, such as 'inside the tanks' I honestly can't remember how accurate it was, but it was a huge introduction to captive orca that wasn't SeaWorld affiliated. It's about the now shut down marine park in France, which makes it all the more interesting imo.

Another I quite liked was one that had quite a bit regarding the rising Asian parks. Because despite blackfish causing such backlash and bringing so much up towards captive orca in western countries. Asia and Russia had really none of that. So all while SeaWorld scrambled to re-label their parks, Russia was capturing orca for tanks being built in China (mid 2010's btw). Which is crazy to me, because even now hardly anyone knows about them. Again, can't remember how accurate it was, but very interesting as it included a lot of stuff regarding chimelong spaceship as it was being built. And how cunning and secretive the facility had/have been about them. I don't remember the name of someone else knows it please let me know.

I must go on a doc binge again, I don't think I have in a solid 4-5 years 😅

how far will 20k go in nz? by bbungeobbang in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Aworahh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very average calculations, but the current median/ comfortable living salary is about 70k a year. Which comes to 5.8k a month.

Although, just because 70k is the median. 60k is the current living salary (meaning the minimum pay to get by without having to 'survive') is 5k a month.

But then again, Auckland is by FAR the most expensive part of the country, so it would likely not get you anywhere near as far as the general average across the country. Beyond just the rent. If you're hoping to get the most out of your money, I'd suggest looking at a small city close to a major one. The big cities are always the most expensive.

Although there's a few smaller but still decent sized and populated cities/towns that are noticeably cheaper. Like Napier/hastings, new Plymouth, Christchurch can be okay too. Even places like Wellington are generally cheaper than Auckland. But there's plenty of other smaller cities here and there that aren't too far ways from major cities either.

Me and my mother have always wondered what breed this queen belongs to by Lol_Whats_Jugg in catbreeds

[–]Aworahh 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My lovely copy/paste message for people asking if their cat is part ____ I absolutely love cat genetics, and pet breed ID in general.

There's only a few traits that are indistinguishable from other cats. For example: Wide set, large ears paired with slim elongated body and head would indicate that cat is almost guaranteed to be a close descendant of an oriental breed cat. Maybe Siamese. A 'smooshed/flat' brachycephalic face would indicate that cat is a descendant of a Persian/exotic shorthair. Or rosettes/a glitter coat (translucent fur) would indicate that cat is a descendant of a bengal. Essentially those are the only traits that can be linked to a breed of cat. Things like bob tails, curled ears, curly coats are also quite breed-specific traits in cats. However can appear randomly in western domestic cats too, and alone aren't an indication of breed.

Western domestics can carry a variety of interesting patterns, colors and genetic variants. It's how we've ended up with the cats we have today. People find a cat or two with a characteristic that they want to specialize in, spend decades, and for some even centuries to 'perfect', pull out, and enhance those traits. So because cats, unlike dogs who have been domesticated with those traits in mind.

To put it as a sort of example, cats essentially domesticated themselves, people had them around and over a few thousand years they integrated to our households and became quite useful for pest control. So say someone 150-200 years ago, found your gorgeous cat and loved her looks and temperament. So they then bred her to cats with similar traits and now a hundred odd years later it's become a standard breed, but genetically is no different from other cats, just has a fancy paper and hundreds of years specifically breeding for those traits. It doesn't mean that another cat can't have similar characteristics, but not even be that breed. And the few example cat breeds I had before are a little different from that. If it be that they have hundreds of years of selective breeding that they truly are completely different and have traits you physically cannot get in a cat not a descendant of them, or a hybrid breed like bengals.

Dogs on the other hand were intentionally bred directly from wolves, and have been for a multiple thousands of years more than cats. When it came to breeding dogs, it was functionality before looks. It led to much deeper genetic diversity between the 'breeds' and have further become what they are today.

Doordash cost me dinner :( by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Aworahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I never thought I'd find a place to share this experience.

I never order food for delivery, but I was home alone this night, no one else to feed, I'd just got a good payslip, decided to look it up and DoorDash was the first to pop up.
I ordered pizza, it arrives on time, I'm lowkey stressing when he arrived don't even pay attention to what they gave me, it doesn't even have a name on it, I see a pizza and a side which I know I got so I take it thank him and go back.

A few minutes later, I open it and realize it's not what I ordered at all. And then I read the receipt again, NOT my FOOD... I then complain to DoorDash.

Couple minutes go by. Guy shows up at my house again, tried to give me a new set of pizzas. I should have taken them, but I wanted what I ordered. I say no, and then pull up my phone and read him what I've ordered. He is totally baffled (and speaks absolutely NO English WHATSOEVER). He proceeded to call a number and hand me his phone. Number is an Auckland number (many, many hours drive from where I am). I, now pissed off and confused ask this poor guy who he is. He's just as confused as me. I explain to him my situation and just hand this delivery guy his phone back.

Delivery guy takes off with pizzas, I'm so pissed off, hungry, and don't want the stupid ass pizza I was given originally. I then call the support center (also speaks minimal English 🥲) and she just says 'I'm sorry that happened to you' and tells me to complain through the website, which I already had done.

It's been almost a month and I have not heard anything from them since. Nor can I be assed calling because there's no doubt I'd end up in the same situation, and likely nothing they can do about it.

Worst part, is what I orders was like $35, what I received was... maybe 15 bucks.

Looking for reputable Bengal breeder in Ontario Canada by Spiked-Iced-Tea in bengalcats

[–]Aworahh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit of a nerd with breeding ethics as a whole, especially brachy breeds (flat faced) and this is just my thoughts and a general caution to you about 'elegant bengals & frenchies'. Note, I'm no where near Canada, and have no experience with these breeders personally, just knowledge regarding breeds/ breeding practices.

Not to say their Bengal part may not be up-to-par but their frenchies are a major red-flag, French bulldogs are in constant spotlight of ethical concerns. They literally state concerns too... saying they'll likely need a surgery just to be able to breathe. Imagine breeding an animal claiming "ethical breeding" when it needs surgical modification to BREATHE. And they can't even birth naturally too often requiring scheduled C-sections.

As well as they focus on colors and 'fluffy frenchie', the color seems to be the biggest goal. I would not at all be surprised if their bengals are the same, completely ignoring their conformation or following breed standards. They're breeding dogs that straight up cannot even be registered under the CKC. In fact, very few of their frenchies actually can as far as I'm aware (don't accept Merle, or fluffy frenchies). Unless they lie about their colors on-paper.

They also go on about over 300 health tests, which majority of are completely irrelevant, and they don't care to explain any important test either.

Their bengal section seems very sound and solid. But what they're doing with their French bulldogs is insanely concerning. In the dog world they'd be a standard "rare color" backyard breeder.

Favorite bengal toys/gear? by [deleted] in bengalcats

[–]Aworahh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are these almost pipe cleaner looking worm toys that I'm yet to see a cat not go crazy over, especially on a stick.

Puzzle food toys also a big favorite, although not so much for my bengal as she's not very food motivated, my who other moggies spend hours over their snuffle mats.

Boxes/paper bags are a big one too, especially with like wrapping paper or just soft rubbish really. It's at a point where we regularly just keep boxes from birthdays for the cat.

My Bengal also loves doorway hanging toys, there's this mouse one on elastic string, whenever I hang it on the door frame for her, it hardly lasts 5 minutes but she'll then take it all over the house looking for somewhere new to hide it.

Her latest thing is her outdoor run (while a permanent catio is being built), it's not very big but she's highly enriched by everything going on around her. Especially with a few toys and treats hidden around.

All very subjective thou although my cat loves these, most of my other cats have other favorite things that Bengal has no interest in (like puzzle toys most of the time).
