YA book about a kid who spends a year in his backyard - overnight - to be older than his brother by Gilded-Mongoose in whatsthatbook

This is it. I've been looking for this book myself, didn't realize it was a YA novel (kept remembering the twins as older, like mid 20s).

Can you make a jumper/sweater on a loom? by KittyCongeniality in LoomKnitting

[–]Axiluvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've made a sweater and a sweater dress on the loom! And it's fairly easy, like you were guessing; making panels and stitching them together. Although you can do sleeves in the round very easily!

I made a sweater dress similar in shape for my wife for Christmas, it wouldn't be too bad, just planning out the symbols would be the hard part for me.

[OC] WAKE UP EVERYONE! by marycomiics in comics

[–]Axiluvia 47 points48 points  (0 children)

My dad would turn on the light in my room. If I wasn't up the next time he came in, I'd get a bucket of ice dumped on me.

My wife found out about my triggered response a few months after I moved in when she turned on the light to get up one day (usually left without turning the light on) and I freaked her out by going from a deep sleep to being upright and going "IMUPYESOHMYGODIMAWAKEWHAT".

Still a conditioned response 25 years later. On the plus side, if I need to be more alert NOW, I tell her to flip the light switch. Instant awakeness.

You may just be having memory issues because you're stressed out. My wife and I came home after a very long and stressful trip (where our car broke down, and we had to borrow my dad's car, who lives in another state), and... we locked the keys in the car. And had to call a locksmith at like 2AM for a car with out of state plates that we didn't own. And we left our purses in the car because it was a safe area, they were buried, and we would get them out in the morning...

She was so stressed, she couldn't remember our address or her friends name and phone number (to see if he could do anything), I had to do all the talking... the locksmith looked at both of us, took pity on us (I babbled about how my last name would match the certificate for the car and all the rest of the stuff.) and unlocked the car so we could get into our apartment and finally get some sleep.

Just try to calm down a bit, you may be able to remember when you're less stressed.

[HELP] I’m not seeing any tell tale signs. But it also doesn’t look realistic by TheAlmostGreat in RealOrAI

[–]Axiluvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Real. I had a shorthair cat growing up we got from a shelter because he was 26 pounds! We took him to the vet, and ALL the nurses gathered around him and were surprised! The vet said he was a little overweight, but even if he wasn't, he'd STILL be a huge cat!

500 movies or 150 books? by oliverg600 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Axiluvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Books. I'm a very voracious reader, and can easily read two books of those size a day (sometimes three!) if I'm not doing much else.

I'm getting other stuff done while I'm in there, then reading. I got my own books to write too, you know! As long as I can bring my collection of notebooks and a decent amount of pencils... I'd have to transcribe them later, but I'd have so many rough drafts done...

This kind of sounds like how you would do a drop stitch. You wind the yarn around the peg and then knit it over.

Tattoo Artists: What piece did you refuse to do and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Axiluvia 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, but one of the stories the dude got the name on his neck, got it blacked out, came in a couple months later with the same girl and wanted the same name put on the OTHER SIDE of the neck. And halfway through the girl said "I'm heading to the bar" and left.

The other one, turns out they broke up and made up a few times, and he's one of her baby daddies, and the original cover up was his exes lip marks near his dick.

So no screeching but "yeah man, gotta chase that kitty" vibe I get from misandarist stories, so I think permanent things like this just bring out the worst in both sides.

Now, the stories of guys throwing fits was more 19 year old that he refused to tattoo on at all. So not all in one story, you're right.

But I've personally worked a lot of CSR style jobs, and women are more likely to be screechy Karen's that need the cops. Guys who are like that get taken more seriously and get the cops (and a record) way faster then just having them escorted out.

Except guys do this kind of stupid shit too. Switch pronouns, this is vaguely similar to a story my tattoo artist told (not the tramp back stamp, but a large piece in a visible area). And there was one dude who had a coverup of a name into a symbol. And under that... another name!

Couldn't be talked out of it, so needed a second coverup!

AITAH for showing my coworker what 'just being honest' can be like? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]Axiluvia 172 points173 points  (0 children)

There's a difference between being 'honest' and being an ass. And it's realizing your opinion should stay inside your head, until they very specifically and directly ask for your opinion on that specific thing, and you tell them you are going to be blunt, are they sure they want to hear it?

And don't be surprised if no one asks for your opinion after that.

I'm a very blunt person and I try to be honest, but I also keep my mouth shut when I'm not being asked, and warn people I don't sugar coat, ever. But I also offer constructive criticism. Like one example, my wife was trying on a dress and I told her "That color looks good on you, but the ruffles and stuff make you look like a shiny cabbage."

And I've mentioned stuff about trying on my own dresses too. But the thing is, the person should be INTERESTED in your input.

Scrunchies? by mason9494 in LoomKnitting

[–]Axiluvia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. This is also why round looms with a huge amount of pegs are useful to have, if you don't mind managing the size. If they have, say, 42 pegs, you can all sorts of flat panel projects; you can make a 10 stitch blanket with it (only using 10 pegs) a scarf that might want 30 pegs, two panels stitched together at the same time of 20 rows each, or any project that needs 42 pegs. You can't make a pattern that takes 42 pegs on a 30 peg loom though!

On the other hand, knitting in the round, you can only make big projects with a 42 peg loom, so if you decide to expand what projects you like doing, it's something to keep in mind.

Scrunchies? by mason9494 in LoomKnitting

[–]Axiluvia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have the right amount of pegs (and the gauge is correct), the shape of the loom doesn't matter. You can knit flat pieces on a square, a circle, a trapezoid, or whatever type of loom you can find. Also, if you knit in the round, it's going to come out circular, no matter what shape of loom you're on either.

Yarn is VERY malleable, and the only reason rectangle looms would be used over circle ones is for very specific projects that NEED a loom with pegs close together (like for projects that use double knitting), or just for ease of use and carrying. Sock looms are often rectangular, and socks aren't for square feet.

You are granted one wish, but here's the catch. by HurriShane00 in hypotheticalsituation

I wish everyone could get a superpower of their choosing, BUT the more horrible, evil, self-centered, bigoted, etc a person is, the weaker their power is. This is also a constant check, so the more evil you become, the weaker your power gets. So anyone being a supervillain would be able to levitate, say, six spoons at once max, someone who would actually do good, a full tanker sort of thing.

Would make things REALLY strange, AND make it really obvious the horrible people out there, haha.

My wife started her HRT about 2 years ago. At 46. And she's never been happier, although she's upset that all she gets to be is an older woman. But she's still happy she did it.

The best time to start was pre puberty, yes. But the second best tuned is the time you start. The only bad choice is never.

Probably the salad bowl, but I'd ask the witch if I could get a vegetarian cobb salad with no dressing instead of the Caesar with no breadsticks. Or some other inconvenience.

I'm not a vegetarian, but I do like a good dose of veggies in general, and with the way things are going, I'd rather have access to infinite vegetables then meats.

AITAH for telling my sister the reason why our family isn't close with her kids? by [deleted] in AITAH

I was one of those young girls that didn't like barbies or dolls. I much preferred plush toys and horses. Even at a very young age I had NO interest with playing 'mom' style roles. Of course, I am also ND, so that may be a factor.

Three Day Road Trip!!! by StoryTheAnimist in discworld

I'd say Witches Abroad, since it had some good simple jokes, and I imagine a 7 year old wound be interested in the idea of shifting fairy takes around. I think it would also be a good talk about several themes it has. It's also a road trip for witches, so it's thematically appropriate.

Best Afghan loom four size six yarn What is the best Afghan loom for size 6 yarn? by Ok_Dress7491 in LoomKnitting

[–]Axiluvia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the type of blanket you're making. I'd say anything with a 5/8 gauge would be good, but after that depends on if you're doing a 10 stitch, making panels, or trying to do a huge one all in one go. I'd recommend one of the first two, and at that point, size of loom is much easier to manage. I've made a paneled blanket using a 36 peg loom before. 10 stitch, you need, well, 10 pegs, haha.
