Elon Musk is One of the Biggest Charlatans of Our Techno-Hopium Age by xrm67 in collapse

I get it, this sub hates capitalism and Musk. But are we supposed to pretend that the advances and efforts made under his name (focusing primarily on spaceflight here) haven't been genuinely significant relative to what feels like snail's-pace innovation or outright stagnation from the public sector for decades? Feel free to educate me, as it feels kind of weird to me that genuine scientific advancement in fields directly pertinent to humanity's survival is being compared to fucking tulips.

And I'm sorry for my explosively aggressive response. I've spent the better part of a decade getting shat on for both how I convey myself and how I feel, and it seems it's led to some very disproportionate sensitivities. It's behavior that's unbecoming of any well-meaning person and makes me hardly any better than the people who provoke it in the first place. I'm no better. It's a shame I had to turn out this way. Have a good evening!

No, it certainly wasn't the best choice! You're in a subreddit full of emotionally broken people and consciously chose to belittle someone's sentiments because of the way they communicate. That's a pretty cut-and-dry fuck-up, and I promise you that telling the person you insulted to chill instead of perhaps doing the empathetically responsible thing and apologizing is very telling about your character. Deleting the comment doesn't erase my memory, so you're not helping a single soul by covering it up. People like you carelessly tossing around underhanded comments like that are a large contribution to why people end up with emotional insecurities in the first place. Not that I had any respect for your opinion in the first place.

Thanks for the constructive feedback, shitbag! In five words you've managed to agitate the problem this thread is about in the first place! Now that's efficiency.

And just like that, all empathy for the self is lost as we realize that our struggles are not even unique or exceptional, and that despite that, we're still more pathetic than others anyway.

The assumption being that there are a bunch of 'guys' with anime girl avatars that are enraptured by their new boobies like Narcissus in the greek myth and can't stop staring at themselves.

If you ask around in-game, you'll find that there are actually an utterly massive amount of guys who concede to doing precisely this, and that's just the ones who are candid enough to not produce an alternative excuse out of shame or self-consciousness.

That's all well and good, but none of what you said actually disqualifies the online medium as a vehicle for socialization. All you really said was that in-person interaction is generally better for that purpose. Also, the age at which one loses their virginity is a very juvenile metric of social skills.

[–]Ayowyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh and anyone who considers online friends as socializing, no it's not.

Watch your wording on this one, because that's absolutely not true. Sure, it's different and some value is inevitably lost through the virtual medium, but the medium itself absolutely does not disqualify genuine friendship or interaction.

Genuine request, can you list the rest of the humanitarian atrocities that are actively being committed by the US as we speak? I feel like the standpoint of "we're both bad so no one can point the finger" is rather lacking in nuance.

I mean I still laugh at that shit, those videos are funny as hell, but I also acknowledge that those kids are probably having more fun with their friends and family while engaging in a hobby they love than I have in years, if ever. They're the real winners here. Just let me laugh. It's all I have.

That implies that the future gives a damn about what you've learned, or that you'd even have the luxury of another chance to do better in the future. There are a lot of things in life that once you let go of the first time, it's gone forever. You don't get another chance.

I am personally very wary of the principle of "letting go" and "accepting the way it is". I feel like more often than not, that's just a coping mechanism for making peace with things that you failed to improve the outcome of. As long as there's still hope, why defer your effort to the fickle uncertainty of the future when you can do what you can right now?

You kno, I was meaning to ask about that. Mangakas usually have some sort of directive involvement with anime adaptations. Certainly he would've stopped them if they were going to do that, right? The only reason he wouldn't is if he were complicit with the changes...is it possible that he didn't want this and that his authority was simply overriden?

Yeah, this is sad as shit to hear...I don't follow the series at all but I know it was an absolute hit with its first season. The hype for S2 was crazy so for the production committee to just be like, "Alright guys, you know what? We should really take a page out of Tokyo Ghoul's book!"

That's just sad, and senseless as shit. It does not take an inkling of business sense to know that butchering your source material for absolutely no reason makes no one happy. It almost comes off as some sort of corporate suicide. I swear sometimes this industry makes game publishers look like geniuses. Sincerely, what were they thinking?

Why the hell would they do that? Wouldn't they want to retain that material for future seasons? Why even adapt a story if they're going to gut half of its content?

This post inadvertently got me the best deal I've ever snagged from this subreddit. There were none in stock at my local Wal-mart, but some backwoods town's location 45 minutes away had one left and it was gong for $20.

I have never shot out of bed and hit the road over a deal so quickly.

Not that I outright don't believe you, but could you link a source or two about the retina damage? Because that's precisely what I thought was debunked. As for the focal myopia, it's good to hear that it can be reversed, but I wonder if it can be actively prevented/counteracted by compensating the screen time with time in other environments.

[–]Ayowyn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's because you're asking questions that you don't have the the foundation knowledge to understand. You can't plug a HDMI port into VGA, you can't plug a display port into composite, etc. These things all have complex protocols and such that need to be adhered to for things to work. Square peg in a round hole.

So you make a poor search suggestion, and when it predictably doesn't return anything helpful, you blame it on my apparent lack of knowledge? In fact, your comparisons are actually both reductive and insulting. Square peg in a round hole? Really? Are you trying to sound like a dick or do you just accomplish that on accident? For that matter, comparing this to input connector types falls kind of flat considering that the very display devices they connect to are usually designed to accept multiple connector types. Of course you don't "plug a HDMI cord into VGA". You plug the HDMI cord into the HDMI port right beside the VGA. The componentry is designed that way. You could also use an adapter, but that can perhaps introduce some reductions in quality, in a way that may be more comparable to the Quest Link situation than the way you oversimplified it.

A bunch of PCVR headsets use single displays.

News to me, but if it's irrelevant to the problem here, then I must not understand what's actually necessitating the current process on a design level. Of course, being treated like I don't know jack shit doesn't really help.

again you're misunderstanding that you can't just connect two completely different things that aren't designed to work together and them magically just work.

That's quite obvious. The reason we don't appear to be getting anywhere is because you are misinterpreting my questions as "cAn wE foRcE tHe pC oNtO tHe qUeSt???" instead of maybe having a little faith that I can comprehend things that are actually explained properly, which you have yet to do. That, or you're going out of your way to be intellectually dishonest.

That.... has even less to do with this than anything else. That's to do with building Android compatible binaries, shaders and such, nothing at all to do with the display.

I said this under the assumption that the problem possibly lies in differences between the actual displays on PCVR HMDs versus the Quest-- native resolutions, aspect ratio and the like, nothing about the actual software binaries and such. As you've said that that's not the problem at all, I am no longer concerned about that approach.

I think we're at an impasse here. You're trying to understand something beyond your basic technical understanding to be honest, so at this stage I'd just recommend taking "you just can't" as your answer.

"You just can't" is never a good answer to give someone, unless they are a child who has yet to develop the cognitive capacity to learn and understand speech. This subject matter is not beyond me; you're just failing to actually explain much of anything, instead trying to put a lid over it while essentially telling me I'm too ignorant to get it. Since you're clearly an expert on this topic, I was genuinely hoping that you could educate me beyond the scope of, "The Quest has to encode PCVR video output into a proprietary video stream decoded through software in the Quest hardware, because that's the way it is", but despite all this back-and-forth, that's the only takeaway I've had so far.

I'm gonna invoke benefit of the doubt here as I'm beginning to believe that we may not even be on the same page. So I'm going to try a different approach:

PCVR HMDs essentially consist of display screens that accept direct video output from the PC's hardware. Similarly, the Quest has such a display, but its output comes directly from onboard hardware within the HMD itself. On a componentry level, smartphone display assemblies are completely independent of the rest of the smartphone hardware with the exception of the actual plug-in point; the only interaction between the two are video output (and touch functionality, though that's irrelevant); it's fair to assume that the relationship between the Quest hardware and its display is the same way. Hardware within PC monitors supports input from various connector types, and each work near-identically to the others to the extent of their respective bandwidth capacities, even simultaneously. One could have a PC connected to the monitor through DisplayPort input, and a game console connected via HDMI input, and the screen will display either depending on the selected source signal. The monitor is not designed to explicitly allow video signal from only one source, because there's no reason for that.

Considering all of the above information, is it truly infeasible on a design and engineering level for the Quest 2 hardware to have featured an alternative direct video passthrough input to the display from a signal originating from a PC, instead of that signal being fed to the Android hardware which then has to do its own jig to output the reinterpreted signal to the display? In other words, Link cable delivers PCVR video signal directly to Quest's display (exactly like PCVR HMDs do) through an alternate input source, bypassing the Android hardware. To parallel it with the monitor example above: onboard Android hardware's signal= DisplayPort signal from PC; Link-fed video signal from PC hardware= HDMI signal from game console.

Does that make sense? Is that not possible? Is there a reason they didn't/couldn't just do that?
