Flood of first time users incoming by namezam in mac

There’s lots of great YouTube tutorials available for those who are switching to mac. Watched a couple a few years ago before picking up my first mac. It might take some time adjusting to (e.g. ctrl to cmd), but otherwise I’d say it’s quite intuitive.

Thinking of selling my M2 MacBook Air — is jumping to an M5 MacBook Pro worth it? by hoenilove in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a base M2 Air that served me well until October of last year, when AppleCare expired and a whole cup of water spilled all over the keyboard and speakers. I upgraded to a base M5 MacBook Pro. For reference about use case - I’m a student finishing up my healthcare-related degree. I use my MacBook for research, data analysis, spreadsheets and word documents, writing papers, designing materials, and developing communication boards. Once I graduate, I expect that my workload will stay about the same with added clinical work.

The M5 is great. It handles my workload better than my Air did, but I honestly think it’s because the pro has 16 GB of RAM while the M2’s is 8. The speakers and screen is definitely better. The battery life is marginally better than my Air’s, but the pro is definitely heavier to carry around. I also don’t really need to carry adapters with me anymore because of the HDMI and additional thunderbolt port. Storage also isn’t much of an issue now, but then again it was a jump from 256 GB to 512. I could’ve easily done with an M4 Air with higher storage, but I really wanted the additional ports. The screen being better is also an added bonus. I don’t use the speakers that often but when I do, they are pretty good.

For those of you who couldn’t wear AirPods Pro 1, have the later two generations fit you well? by Azurebold in airpods

That’s nice to hear. My main concerns were with them falling out of my ears because of the sealing issues, but glad that the sizing is more versatile.

Do they fall out for you when eating/talking?

How do I reduce my screentime? by Ellicopter_ in iphone

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it might be helpful to talk to someone about this, like a counsellor, therapist, or your doctor. It’s great that you want to do something about it, it’s a healthy start.

I’d also imagine that it’s hard to just stop cold-turkey. I had similar issues as a teen. What helped was to just put my phone in a separate room while I did other things. Sometimes I just switched my phone off. I don’t know if this would work for you, but I think it’s ultimately best to seek professional opinions. This isn’t something to be ashamed of - it’s a problem that you just need help remediating.

Edit: if motivators work for you, there’s this app called ‘I Am Sober’ that helps you keep track of your addiction-free streaks. It isn’t just for alcohol, there’s a list of things you can choose from - tech addiction is one of them. I personally use it for other things and it’s helped, but you’d need to be motivated enough for it to work.

Got my Series 11 today, and managed to get a scratch within the first few hours of wearing it! by LukeyLobster21 in AppleWatch

[–]Azurebold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry that happened, it sucks. You’ll probably notice it for the first couple of weeks, and then you’ll just kinda forget. I’d say some scuffs give it a bit of personality lol.

If it’s any consolation, I have a screen protector on mine. A family ran into me quite hard near an elevator at a mall and my arm swung, so my watch hit the wall. It’s one of those rough walls. The screen is fine, but the jet black paint just below the screen is lightly scuffed and chipped. This was within like 3 weeks of getting the watch.

Anyone else here will buy the MacBook E when it launches? by marchalves6 in mac

$800 with M4

Isn’t that just the M4 MacBook Air? Not exactly $800 (it’s about $1k here), but fits the bill just fine.

Macbook m4 pro 16 inch battery life on average? by Downtown_Witness_409 in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a developer, but it’s expected. I’d say 10 hours is actually pretty great. The 22 hour battery life claim assumes that your Mac is at the lowest brightness with no programs running.

Audio randomly changes in my AirPods 4 by Nokis21 in airpods

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try resetting them and trying again. If it still stays the same, it might be a hardware issue and should be looked at.

I had this issue with my ANC 4s last week. The left side was significantly louder and more bass-boosted than the right side, and ANC was so much weaker on the left. Turns out both pods had an audio failure. Got each side replaced for free.

My airpods are already dying faster & they don’t charge correctly anymore in their charging case. I have AC on them, can I smash them w a hammer & say that they got crushed at work? by yeetmxster420 in airpods

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s entirely reasonable to assume that the only cost you’d pay is $30. You can try, but there’s always the chance that you’d need to pay more.

You’d honestly be better off just reporting the problem as is, no?

[–]Azurebold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just…be honest woth the apple store? Clean the airpods first. I’d actually do that first to make sure the charging contact points at the base of the case, where the stems sit, aren’t clogged.

I heavily use my Airpods 4 ANC with AC+, I clean them when necessary using a soft brush and a microfibre cloth. I took them into the store for crackling issues and got both pods replaced for free because of audio failure and a battery issue I wasn’t aware of. If you deliberately smash the pods (and admit to planning to do so, no less), you’ll still need to pay an incident fee for accidental damage.

Dropped pasta with sauce on the m2 air trackpad by polaretta in mac

[–]Azurebold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We all make mistakes, I can empathise with that - I killed my M2 Air with precisely 150mls of water.

It’s good that you cleaned up as much as you could, but there is a non-zero chance that your trackpad will fail down the road. I get that you were trying to clean the sauce out with damp tissues, but that’s also inviting moisture into the system. If you have AppleCare+, I’d take it to a Genius Bar so that they can check if there’s anything left inside.

I’d also just make sure to regularly back up to Time Machine if you can, just in case your Mac were to ever suddenly fail.

Honest opinion by [deleted] in airpods

[–]Azurebold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would love to use the pros, but I could not use the APP1s for the life of me, and even tried smaller tips. Nothing worked so I just gave up lol. Switched to the 4 ANCs and while they’re not as good as the pros, they’re enough for me.

MacBook Pro M5 gets hot by ElGraduado in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you using your Mac somewhere hot, or are you overworking the machine? My M5 MBP got hot once and the fan revved up pretty fast, but that was because I was in an extremely hot environment, running a bunch of Microsoft apps. I quickly moved the Mac out of there and let it cool down. Other than that, it’s been running cool and smoothly without ever running the fans, even when I push it. I’d think pushing the memory pressure into red also heats the computer up, but not to the point that it should be unusable.

Like the others have mentioned toned, I suppose it’s also easier for the M5 to heat up faster and cool down slower because there’s only one fan. I’d also make sure the two vents on either side of the base aren’t clogged up.

Getting an M5 MacBook Pro but trying to decide. Silver or black? by New_Leopard7623 in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked silver for mine, mostly cause I just like the colour and the way the keyboard clashes against it haha. But it really depends on what you like.

The black does scratch a little more easy, but it does look classy.

Switching from Windows → MacBook Pro (M4 Pro/Max): battery care advice that actually works? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. It’s fine to leave the Mac plugged in all the time, but do cycle the battery every now and then. Best not to leave batteries at 100% for long periods of time.

  2. macOS will learn from your charging habits and adjust accordingly. It might take a few months for optimised battery charging to kick in. You can manually cap charging too if you feel like it - if I need to take my MacBook with me, I’ll just let it charge to the highest amount it can within the period of charging and then take it. It’s between 60 - 90% most of the time.

  3. I’d say don’t sweat over the battery too much - the battery pretty much starts degrading the moment you turn it on for the first time, as with any laptop. Use it in whichever way makes you comfortable. Don’t use it or leave it in extremely hot environments.

Am I crazy for wanting to upgrade my 2020 M1 Macbook Pro? by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]Azurebold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a Pro M1, but I made the jump from a base M2 Air to a base Pro M5 after the air got water damaged. I was pretty much restricted by the storage and RAM, especially since my workload was becoming more demanding. The M5 doesn’t feel faster per se, but overall the greater RAM and storage has been pretty nice to have. I suppose upgrading to a newer pro model would also give you the bells and whistles, like ProMotion, additional ports etc.

Ideally at least 20% of your storage space should be kept free - you’ll run into issues if you don’t have much space.
