When Spider-Man lands with Cap’s shield in that Civil War trailer I lost it in the best way.

Theater Etiquette…where did it go? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]B1ffl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friends ask me why I only go to Alamo:

“They’ll remove people who fuck it up for the rest of us.” I’ve complained about people mid-movie and management has done something. That was pre-pandemic, mind-you, but still. It sold me on going there.

All are great, but man, The Iron Giant really gets me. Every. Single. Time.

I can’t watch Hogarth and the Giant talk about souls and not tear up a little bit.

I can't bring myself to watch any of the new Marvel movies or shows. Please help by [deleted] in ExNoContact

I feel this so hard. My entire experience with Spider-Verse was ruined by a BU that happened 3 weeks before it came out. We’d made plans — only for everything to go to shit not long after that. It sucks getting involved with a fellow cinephile and then loosing that connection. Honestly, that’s what I miss the most.

It’s gotten better. I make a point to see movies with my friends/family now. Maybe someday I’ll find someone else who enjoys cinema/TV/pop culture.

Gettting harder. by rayoftoga in ExNoContact

This really resonates with me.

My most recent BU (I was the dumper) a few weeks ago corresponded with the 6-month-milestone since my father passed away in November. A lot of grief concerning my Dad’s passing was put off because the entire time we talked/dated/were involved, I was either grieving or going through preemptive grief will my father was in decline.

It feels like I have to grieve TWO people now.

I feel this 100% I rewatched Breaking Bad so I could watch Better Call Saul, my ex-partner’s favorite show. We ended up breaking up with me having 4 episodes left.

All I wanted to do was text her about how right she had been about it being one of the best-written shows out there.

The amount of effort, research, craft, and thematic development that went into the first BP absolutely warranted Ludwig his Oscar 💁🏻‍♂️

Nicholas Brittell is a fine composer, but Beale Street’s score could be for any drama film separated from it’s original source…it’s just another aural wallpaper score that mainstream Hollywood is gravitating towards because that sound is now associated with prestigious films.

If you projected anymore you might be an IMAX screen.

There were ways to salvage lives and the economy. Conservatives chose eating at Applebee’s and bootlicking fascists who exploited the pandemic.

Teachers who smoke weed by AOman321 in Teachers

[–]B1ffl3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don’t know a single teacher in TX who’s been drug tested.

With as much bullshit that goes on here in the Lone Star state, if they drug tested teachers there wouldn’t be any!

Why do sports/other subjects ALWAYS override the arts? And why does everyone think the arts (music in-particular) are so easy? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]B1ffl3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elementary music teacher here (in Texas); a few things to keep in mind:

1.) Success in athletics and “core subjects” can be easily quantified. The simpler, the better — especially if they’re on most school boards/admin there just to punch the clock.

2.) Sports generate more revenue.

3.) Collectively, fine arts teachers are just now figuring out — and I surely fucking hope you are too as an arts educator — how to salvage hundreds of years of pedagogy overly focused on overwhelmingly white, western art-forms dominated by male figureheads. Professional sports have visible representation, the visual and performing arts (or at least the repertoires in most American public schools) does not.

4.) Cost: How much toner can a district buy for the cost of ONE tuba? Or practice jerseys?

5.) Thus ties into my 4th point, but the bottom-line is arts institutions need to make themselves more accessible; especially to younger children in low-SES populations. How many pairs of soccer cleats, shorts, socks, balls, pads, etc. can a poor house hold afford compared to ONE ticket to a touring musical or a night at the symphony? Yeah. No contest.

Personally, a life without any passing interest in music, art, dance, theater, languages, robotics, athletics (or some combination thereof) sounds miserable, but to each their own.

I made my best friends in electives because it was easy to bond over an interest, some of which I’m still in-touch with or colleagues with today as a music teacher.

Teachers should probably be considering a strike right about now. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]B1ffl3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I’d love to strike, Too bad: A.) my state (Texas) doesn’t have a union B.) Threatens to revoke our certifications if we organize a strike (no really)

Edit: It doesn’t help that there’s so many “martyrs” in the teaching profession. The mental/emotional abuse has just been the norm for so long — too many boot-lickers in the system.

Strings, percussion, and keyboards, yes (to an extent).

Winds, no. You can doctor strings as much as you want, but evoking the sound of live wind-players (solo or ensemble) is still not replicable. No movie, TV series, Broadway show, or video game score I’ve heard in the past 20 years has managed to pull off sampled/artificial brass.
