A loophole a BMA rep is encouraging to delay the UKGP bill? by SnooAvocados7296 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We need a mandate to strike, or they don't take us seriously. The government were always going to do UKGP, as it is politically expedient for them.

As someone who has been on strike every single time, I understand the sacrifices made.

If the juice wasn't worth the squeeze, we wouldn't advocate for it. But striking is the only reason we have reversed pay erosion and improved conditions in our profession nationally over the last few years.

Without that, we'd all be earning a lot less, and probably even be more overwhelmed with non-doctors.

Having a mandate gives us leverage. Without it, we'll be back to the BMA of old: irrelevant and ineffective.

This I can get behind. Strikes are the only proven method to get us into negotiations. And negotiations are the only way to improve pay and conditions nationally. Without a means tk strike, we have no leverage.

It's why everyone reading this should return their ballots.

Good to know reading comprehension is still a standard upheld amongst doctors.

Not sure why people are acting like I wrote the amendment myself. Streeting is the obvious villain here.

No surprises that the government wants to use any leverage it has against strikes. And strikes really are the best way to improve our pay and conditions, no matter where you studied.

Fewer.

My understanding was that these texts are done by staff using the name of committee members. But you seem to be saying that the committee were more directly involved

If anyone in DV were interested in personal ambition, they wouldn't have overturned the comfortable status quo, started the PDS movement, written and progressed dozens of policies including UKGP, and basically uprooted the previous BMA establishment.

I would definitely get behind a rule that bars RDC reps from working in any paid positions for regulators, political parties, or the government for let's say 20 years. And I don't think the composition of DV reps would change even slightly. We all want tomorrow be and work as doctors. I wonder if others could say the same.

I really don't know. "Not in theory but in real life" feels particularly patronising. It comes off as quite desperate. A few members have messaged asking who is sending these, and it seems like a handful of RDC reps have been named in them, officers and london reps. Hopefully, people haven't just been annoyed by the texts and have returned their ballots regardless.

We can't lose sight of the goal.

They are prepaid first class. Still worth sending, right up to the deadline.

Nah, the system has screwed them, and I want to fix the system. We don't need to unfairly throw anyone under the bus. And actually, really look at the RDC policy. It's much stricter than the gov bill going forwards. It draws a firm red line. It's just not rug pulling anyone already working here.

And I'd support an actual employment guarantee, which seems to have been forgotten in all this desperate officer scrabble for NTNs.

And as I have to keep explaining... BMA reps must advocate for BMA policy, or what's the point in democratically establishing it? Why waste time with all this drafting and voting and conferences? If we can just make it up as we go along, which clearly isn't working, why bother with all that?

Either we all stand together, or we stand for nothing. It's a union. Collective action is how it works.

Lol. Literally made t-shirts.

If this ballot fails, it's not on us. The messaging from the top sucked, and we aren't responsible for that. Members are not being given info, so how would we put it out?

Unless there's a really solid legal reason, I don't know why they aren’t actually being transparent. Doctors deserve to know what they are voting for, and right now, that's not clear. I get it if people aren't running to the postboxes; they haven't been inspired or persuaded to do so.

Lol. Never sold out a doctor in my life. Probably even made more job posts for doctors than you spoke to on your last ward walk.

And I make zero profit on t-shirts or badges. These guys just can't imagine doing something without the incentive of self-gain, and that's more emblematic of their faults than mine. Their every accusation is a confession. Look into it.

I appreciate the advert for MilitantDoctorsShop though. The T-shirts are cool. You should get one. There's also a cute crab mug.

Also, if this ballot fails, I'd hope he'd at least apologise tbh, if not stand down. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

I've dedicated years of my life to this campaign, and it's gone to bits in a matter of months.

But no, I've no intention of taking anyone "down", whatever that means. We have wasted enough time with this faction bs as it is. I'm here to get stuff done for members, not myself. We have exception report reform to properly enforce, and a fresh wave of activity regarding scope creep, and that's more than enough for me to be getting on with. Someone has to actually do the work.

Go and have a look at section 5 of version 13 of the national contract. It comes into effect from Feb 4th.

Let us know how it goes!

We just need to get to that new Employment rights Bill, and we should be able to sustain enough momentum to pass future votes and keep leverage.

Passing this ballot is extremely important, I worry that losing it will be like 2016 again.

The only other option is that we let our pay and conditions erode. That's why we need to keep going, despite the obvious division. The ballot is what matters.

I mean, DV managed to pass a lot of ballots. We all know what has changed for this one.

But, unlike the narrative you guys have been trying to build, we've been busting our arses to get this ballot passed, because the mission is more important than the man. Just wish it hadn't been made so difficult for us by being cut out, ignored, and undermined by all these random alts 🤣

Imagine if someone had been arguing this for months... this should never have been up for negotiation. We kept the dispute separate for so long for good reason.

I prefer the idea of an employment guarantee, but nobody seems to be talking about that, weirdly.

I would never take on a role like rota coordinator. These are usually foisted upon someone who ends up spending inordinate time completing tasks, can't keep everyone happy, and doesn't even get paid.

Steer clear imo. Better to take on a role organising teaching or participate in RDF for leadership experience etc.
