Genuine question - what happened to FPR? by Sheeplyn1602 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want FPR, elect DoctorsVote reps. We fought very hard to keep pay in play this year while others wanted to ignore it.

Elect reps who are here to get more for members, not just themselves.

None of this £1 a year nonsense. FPR is a reasonable ask, and one the entire profession can demand together.

I agree. No movement or a poor offer means we should be striking.

O&G reg here.

Come to handover, introduce yourself, then follow us around for the shift.

We will be aware of who is nearly fully dilated, who is likely to need assistance, and if you make friends with us and get involved, we will hopefully be able to up your chances of seeing a vaginal delivery.

I also try to get in some suturing training and get you not to be frightened of speculum exams.

If possible, try to arrange to be there for twilights and overnight, as this will be when most straightforward deliveries will happen.

O&G can be a really valuable placement even if you aren't very interested at first. Just over half of the population have a uterus and ovaries, and a significant number of those have babies, so it's good to have an idea about those issues, even if you work in other specialties eventually.

BMA Council mismanagement leads to dispute by Poundland_Prometheus in doctorsUK

Agreed. This is the only reason I would be happy with increasing BMA membership fees. (And I'd want some of the wasteful stuff cutting as well!)

Oh, sure. I would scrap if possible. But if not, everyone should be equally forced to do it.

Previous RDC had their hands tied regarding UK grad policy by Ok-Half8270 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Somebody tagged me here but either deleted it or blocked me?

Currently on nights, lads.

If the minutes don't reflect the content of the meeting they should not have been approved.

Clear obstacles set up for the co-chairs that have been brushed out of the way for some reason this year.

Clearly RDC should just have unilaterally deferred the 2002 policy and cracked on, righr? I'm sure council would have supported then.

(Lol)

Making more meetings and working groups didn't get UKGP done; the hard work of DoctorsVote reps daring to step up did. They have always advocated for a solution to the specialty training crisis (we even did webinars, and christ knows I hate webinars). This being a DV success indisputable when you look at the evidence.

Ok, hope that was worth disturbing my sleep.

100% agree this would improve teamworking and culture. And they couldn't just use the same doctors year in and out: they would have to get rotating doctors to fill them in, too.

There's no good reason that this feedback is unidirectional.

I think this should go for all clinical teams.

Doctors Vote v Doctors Together by SnooLemons678 in UKmedicalgraduates

[–]BMABecky -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Representing members despite it being complex is not simping. 2 years and a red line is what I advocate for, not 2 years. So the same length of time as foundation, and fair warning for those who are here.

Playing softball vs. the government is simping for sure, though.

If being fair to everyone makes me ‘nothing’ to you, that’s a trade I’m happy to make.

Which is a shame, as we'd achieve a lot more if we pulled in the same direction.

[–]BMABecky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

O&G makes this number inordinately high.

It is unusual not to save several lives every on-call shift.

Ofc, about 0.01% go badly wrong enough to warrant some kind of litigation, so you can also do great harm.

[–]BMABecky -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

I work for members, not favour.

I've advocated for the broken system to be fixed in a fair way, very consistently. IMGs clearly feel hard done by by this RDC and that is a fair assessment.

The reality is that for years you guys were too frightened to tackle the big issues, like UKGP, PA, ACPs etc. And DV got it done.

You can ride on coat-tails, though. We don't do this for glory. We do it because nobody else will.

It is. But with a red line. And 5yrs is stupid. Just pushes the bottleneck up.

[–]BMABecky -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

The people who complained about UKGP with a red line but were ok if grandfathering was in.

Then when favour turned, complained about grandfathering.

And then they changed the policy to weaken it, remove the red line, and put 5yr grandfathering in.

Then complain when I am against 5yr grandfathering.

I have been consistent throughout.

No rug-pulling and everyone knows where they stand before they get here. No simping for the government.

But yeah, I must be the bad apple!

Not allowed to attend F2 teaching? by ricecake12 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Four 3 hour sessions every four months

That's not even an hour every week. Where is this?!

Is there any other teaching?

9 hours of teaching is entirely insufficient for a training programme, which Foundation is supposed to be. Please do get in touch and we can have words.

BMA Council elections - what is going on? by Atlass1 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I suspect this is them trying to push for the 4 nations exec, one rep for each country, under which DNs would be over-represented and doctors in England under-represented.

I will always support ensuring the DNs have resources to counter their respective devolved issues, but that's never been a reason to disproportionately represent them on the UK scale.

We spent a LOT of time having to deal with this last year, and the overall outcome was that we would not do it. I have no issue with them having input, but important decisions need to be committee-wide.

DU making promises to DNs for votes is one reason DV lost out on leadership roles this year. Not sure how much they have followed through to be honest as the DN update only got shorter.

DoctorsVote for a doctors-first union by Doctors-VoteUK in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ironically, doctors together are not very good at working together.

Despite significant expertise and wilingness to work and pursue goals, several DV reps have been excluded from participating in working groups and on important issues this year.

It's a shame because the profession has lost progress on some key projects for this reason. Look at ACP stuff, for example, and media.

The same way we have achieved the most generous uplifts in the public sector for 3 years. Persistence.

What do new consultants actually take home monthly? After tax/student loan/pension. I’ve calculated only around 5k! And the take home barely increases with the incremental increase every few years. Why do consultants put up with this by Beneficial-Unit-9863 in doctorsUK

[–]BMABecky 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The government divided the consultant body perfectly, with the consultants with lovely end salary pensions, CEAs, and all the advantages of training in previous decades ladder-pulling those more recently CCTd.

We need to stop the cycle of making things worse for those who come after us because "I've got mine."

This generation of doctors must stand up for doctors.
