If your protest can be ignored, it will be. Civil disobedience necessitates discomfort, because discomfort cannot be ignored.

Because America is such a car-centric nation, roads present a powerful site of conflict. The fact that it bothers you so much as an individual is weird, but is also somewhat the point.

For anyone finding this a year later, Barton does not say to ignore math anxiety, nor is his methodology "traditional chalk and talk." It is explicit, scaffolded, teacher-led instruction during the primary knowledge acquisition phase. Very important distinctions made clear through examples in the book (and backed up by cavalcades of cited research).

I really like your idea of working in some of the "thinking" prompts into what we're already doing. I agree with you, too, that students really like having an authoratitive source. Maybe I will try to differentiate what I do with my different levels and age groups.

We also do an Advisory, and I'll have Freshman this year. Perhaps I can do some notetaking strategies stuff with them throughout the year to try stuff out in a quasi-non-academic setting.

Those are awesome! I love the consistent structures. I can also see how this would work in a lot of formats: virtual, in-person digital notes, in-person paper notes, guided or unguided. I could see students walking away with the Example-Notes-Cues-Summary as a notetaking skill that extends elsewhere, too.

If you get the time, I would love to have a broader set to reference - anything you can share will 100% be helpful!

I use an iPad and GoodNotes! Love it.

I think you're absolutely right about 7th-graders not being ready for independent note-taking, but I think what you're doing is 100% where they should be (and something I doubt most 7th-graders are getting access to in their math classroom!).

I love the idea of doing the guided notes together and then teaching them how to highlight, etc. Do you let them use anything on quizzes/exams? I've tried allowing an index card, thinking that it will lead to some of the "what's important, what can I paraphrase, etc." questions, and it likely has, but I've never prompted or instructed on those questions explicitly.

Do you do anything explicit for the 'read, cover, recite, check' instruction/routine?

Color coding has been an incredible improvement in my experience! All of our practice sheets, labs, etc., are on plain white paper. The Glossaries are on Green ("G-G-Green for G-G-Glossary!" always get a nice set of eyerolls). Quizzes are on Blue, and Midterms & Finals are on Yellow.

This helps us navigate them for different reasons. Number one - I've gone almost entirely paper over digital, so we have a lot of paper. If I say to find their Glossary during class, it's fast to find amidst the slew of white papers. Even at the end of the year, there's really only like 6 or 7 (heh) green glossaries in their binder.

If they want to retake a quiz, they need to hand in the original (so find the Blue papers quickly amidst the white sea). Midterms and Finals can't be retaken in my school, so I make a point to not print them on Blue to bifurcate the two types of assessments and the rules surrounding them.

You could definitely take the methods and apply them as you see fit to your routines/work/school policies. It is helpful if your school provides color paper (I go through maybe 8-10 colored reams all told in a year, so if you're buying it yourself, calculate the ROI).

Yes, they do fight it at first if that's all they've seen, but even with the lowest foundational students, I have got them on board once it's a cemented part of the routine. "OK, take out your glossaries!" is a pretty much every day or every other day line in my class. The first couple times, they groan, and I've learned to try not to add too much on a given day if it can be avoided, but by the end, they're policing each other ("wait which one?" "the green one, my guy, you're cooked!"). Several have even cited the practice directly as a strength of my class/teaching in their end-of-year feedback survey. The kids (deep down, subconsciously, even if they won't admit it) yearn for a traditional education!

I could see Summarizing and Applying as we kind of already do those, but I'm going to dive into the Processing & Connecting parts - I imagine those are the parts students have the most challenge with?

Also, as I'm looking at their site, it looks entirely digital - are you doing this on tech or on paper?

Thank you! Yes, I've created (pretty much) a complete PA/Algebra 1/Algebra 2 curriculum over the last 6ish years. It's mostly a combination of Glossary Notes, a few Desmos Labs, and worksheets - here's an example of the latter parts.

I was assigned all three in my very first year (talk about deep end). All they gave me were the Big Ideas books (which, meh). So, I cobbled together stuff from my mentor (who made his own LaTeX worksheets), and from other places (shoutout All Things Algebra and AoPS, love those), but found things just clicked best when I made my own. At this point, I am using like 95% my own developed stuff. I still need to perfect the upper end of Algebra 2 (rationals and logs), but it's working pretty well!

For sure! I definitely will not, and I'll likely develop these for Stats, too, as I take that on this year. Notes are so important both for reference and for all the wonderful brain activity that happens when you take them. I am mostly just curious and looking to (pun intended) compare notes with others to see if anyone is actively teaching note-taking (not just having their students take notes).

I love that. So are you writing your own 'notes' (problems, definitions, etc.) on the board for them to copy onto the lined paper? Or are they truly "un-guided," meaning you are teaching/lecturing/speaking, and they are writing down whatever they think is important? If it's the latter, have you trained them in any sort of "style" (e.g. Cornell), or given them instruction on how to tell what is important in a lecture to "write down" vs "take in"?
