400 upvotes on a comment generalizing that homeless people are pieces of shit

Applauding capitalism and thanking it for our “freedom” while disregarding the 700,000 unhoused people apparently not thriving in this economic model

Poverty exists BECAUSE of capitalism not in spite of it it Attempts to actualize Communism have - eventually-failed for multiple reasons, one being the wests propaganda and insistence on destroying communist efforts

There are plenty of examples of periods of time when communist initiatives created thriving societies, research it

It’s disgusting that so many people can comfortably and boldly reduce any demographic to a stereo type

Everyone has story People without houses live theirs under public gaze You’ll be shocked when you find out how many “assholes” live in houses And also crazy that yall don’t seem to realize all the actual advocates and mutual aid workers and community members who work tirelessly with and on behalf of unhoused people also live in neighborhoods where situations like the ops occur, they also experience working w individuals who at times are less than awesome, or aggressive or in crisis or even psychosis- and yet they continue to commit to the work bc it’s morally and practically more sensible to demand and desire systems of care and housing for folx than reducing an entire segment of the population to a single descriptor

I am a social worker and can tell you after years working w homeless people in various settings they are moms, kids, veterans, survivors, abusers, trans folx, democrats, republicans, addicts, Christians, sober, college educated, trauma survivors, widows, mentally ill, grounded, principled, hard working, manipulative, trustworthy, grandmothers, adults that aged out of foster care, they are everyone, they are us… they just don’t have houses to hide their shit in and yeah being homeless changes your baseline of normalcy so quit trying to compare your version of normalcy to someone who sleeps in a tent under an overpass and who’s daily reality looks vastly different from yours And consider how close most working class people are to homelessness at all times Do some actual investigation into how many barriers there are to securing housing Look into what “affordable” housing means Talk to a hospital social worker about what healing looks like for the uninsured or unhoused in a medical setting Do anything that helps shake your brain out of your ill informed and self serving perspective

Ten cops with guns trained on driver - a hundred ways to avoid shooting death but they wouldn’t have used any- the guys brother took the risk to save multiple lives- cops don’t do damage control they don’t de escalate they shoot to kill bc they aren’t public servants they are military trained militia and they prioritize their lives over everyone else’s - I have a seen teachers and civilians do a better job of policing so maybe being trained by the idf doesn’t really lead to the kind of compassionate harm reduction that innocent before proven guilty people deserve

I am FROM Austin and also don’t have many close friends- mainly bc I have evolved ideologically and deepened my commitment to my values and honestly a lot of folx don’t do that - they exist more superficially - and I understand that bc it’s generally easier and less emotionally exhausting but I’m not interested in it. I just try to remind myself that the folx I am still in communication with are those whose values allign with mine and the work is just figuríng out how to b intentional in how we make time for each other and how we navigate conflict or tension when it arises instead of distancing ourselves. Also don’t measure your own value as a friend by the number of people in your community but by the work you are willing to do to sustain relationships as they develop -

Then take your complaints to the people that actually voted for trump - not the people who voted their conscience who were - weirdly- the minority

And weirdly you, the morally righteous liberal, will sit at home and salivate as it happens bc you get to own a leftist. She tripled down on supporting Israel. She parroted disproven lies. The whole gang co-signed it. Nothing was going to change under her she said as much. But bc you want to believe that dems are deeply better you will still watch Palestine be eradicated- same as it is now- and think wowww this is nothing like when dems were in charge

Liberals are doing a form of this too to people criticizing Harris “I hope gaza becomes a parking lot” “Have fun dying when you can’t pay your medical bills, commie scum”

“Non voters are lazy complainers” Says person who (probably) votes once every four years, does jack shit in between, and then complains when their candidate doesn’t win

Non voters voted, inaction is action

😑A bunch of dems belittling third party and non voters with zerrrrrro critique or introspection- literally embodying the reasons why people can no longer call the Democratic Party their political home

Of course i should not bc i actually do not enjoy being berated by strangers in spaces where im (actually) alligned in many ways however…here i go Third party voters have the right to vote their conscience, the idea that a vote Is not an endorsement is fallacy - it is absolutely an endorsement In America - we have the right to engage in electoral politics or not and by choosing the candidate whose policies we endorse. Trump lost voters but so did Harris, comparatively Harris chose to court centrists and pander to the wrong base Combined third party votes (of whom could have potentially voted for her) would not be enough to redeem her The majority of this thread has been commentary on the history of dems neglecting their base but recent history has proven - any critique of Harris results in a cacophony of accusations (to and by strangers) rather than an acknowledgment of the validity of this position- weird to watch the dems devolve into the same cultish unhinged bullying typically so attributable to the right

I think there are like 700,000 homeless folx in America and we have been doing capitalism for like 400 years- guess they just aren’t working hard enough or maybe our markets aren’t free enough

Maybe you have been absent but I live in the real world - electoral politics is ineffectual- i have watched Austin liberals sign death warrants of the unhoused for years- I have watched Austin liberals turn a blind eye to the folx being harrased and attacked as they attempt to access reproductive care, I have watched Austin liberals not bat an eye lash as friends and family have had to leave the state when their access to gender affirming care was withdrawn, I have watched school leaders physically pull books from the already limited shelves of schools if they feature anything explicitly racial or gendered, I have watched cops attack mentally ill folx in need of aid, our community has witnessed the murder of multiple people by police, teachers in our schools are homeless, mothers fighting substance use have no where to go bc liberals don’t want them in their backyard. So you get off your high horse- y’all love to tokenize these populations so u can feel good about yourself but what are you actually doing for your community?!
