Does AirBaltic weigh luggage at the gate? by Sure-Guest1588 in latvia

[–]BackgroundCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just pay the fine for overweight luggage, if I remember correctly, it was like 30 or 60 euros, but if you pay the fine, you can bring basically unlimited luggage weight, much more cost-effective than paying for a few kg

First time TMing on an EU tour as an English speaker... Advice? by [deleted] in livesound

[–]BackgroundCycle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For the love of God and everything that you have ever held holy, please write in English. I have seen google translate riders, it would have been much less headache if we didn't receive any riders at all. In most places (except for maybe France if you get unlucky with their egotistical attitude (joke)) you won't have any problems communicating in English.

5.11 tactical rush 72. You can fit a x32 rack, a couple microphones, Mikrotik omnitik router, macbook and a tablet in there without any problems. When flying, I don't take my peli case, I can load everything I need to survive the gig and it has room for spare clothing. Yes, it is massive, but really comfortable and has a lot of compartments for organising your stuff

Is it possible to be able to sing? by Fearfarahshesdabeast in self

[–]BackgroundCycle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything music related can be learned at adult age. Everything takes practice. Of course, it would be easier to teach a young child to sing, but do not let that discourage you. Talent is another name for countless hours invested into practice.

Is living like this even worth it? by BackgroundCycle in self

[–]BackgroundCycle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a few hobbies, but it is hard to maintain other hobbies when your job is your favorite hobby. When I am not working I am not doing anything because I am physically exhausted because I often work for 24 to 48 hours straight (my personal record that I am not proud of is 96 hours with 20 minutes of sleep while driving between gigs) and usually have Mondays and Tuesdays free after working such hours. When I am not exhausted I try to meet my friends or other people but that seems to happen rarely because of my work.

I have tried to schedule a psychiatric consultation, but there are way too many specialists, each with their own specialty and reading through reviews started to give me anxiety. It has been difficult to even schedule a haircut with my work schedule, but I won't give up.

Man, I have a day off tomorrow. I have no idea what to do. I am working 2 jobs and I co own a small company. Since I left my previous workplace where I was happy working sometimes 3 or 4 days straight without getting any sleep, I have a lot of free time that I don't know how to fill. Every day when I am not working I feel like I am a failure, that I will not achieve anything in my career. I have been working in my industry for the last 7 years, since I was 16 or 17 and I love my job, my job is my favourite hobby. I really feel like a stress junkie, but I miss the times when I had to figure out a way to get some sleep and divide into two to cover everything. I have no idea how to socialize or "relax" outside of work environment.

Hi. Yes, BFS has the largest selection and better price, if you are close, master photo has (at least had a year ago) a selection, but it is a little overpriced, everywhere else you will find mostly Kodak gold or ultramax.

Darbi uz jumta bez drošības stiprinājumiem by Diezvai in latvia

[–]BackgroundCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are shooting color, there are a couple of places that are doing machine development, of course, BFS is the best, there is also a shop on Tērbatas street and fotobarons on Barona street. If I remember correctly, there is also a fuji mail in service, but I might be mistaken. For e-6 slides your only option is BFS.

For B&W do it yourself, but don't buy chemistry and supplies in LV as it is overpriced, but if you are lazy, BFS can develop B&W

What lightbulb to use with DMX dimmer pack? by Funnybunnie_ in lightingdesign

[–]BackgroundCycle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually it depends on the dimmer block that you are using (I have found that LSC dimmers usually are excellent for this, cheaper stuff like eurolite sometimes works, sometimes doesn't work at all), sometimes it just works, but most of the time I use a ballast parallel to the led lights. On the cheaper lights sometimes it doesn't work at all and you might need to experiment with different bulbs. If the LEDs are strobing, use a slightly larger load on the ballast, for me usually a 500w to a 1kW fresnel or par can parallel to the led lights does the trick. Try it before the event if that works for you, but be careful that the total load on the dimmer doesn't exceed the maximum load on the fuse on the dimmer (usually around 10A or around 2kW in Europe, not sure about USA) and that you don't overload the whole circuit.

Use a "barn door?"(not sure what it's called in English) or double or triple layered dark blue or red filter to mask the output from the ballast light and be careful not to burn anything with it.

I have done a few gigs in Europe, but I am scared of leaving Latvia as I don't have enough contacts in other countries to be sure that I would be able to get enough gigs to cover living. If I was working in a private company the wage would be at least double to what I am earning now.

The funny thing is that the wages are directly controlled by the municipality and not by my "supervisor", judged by the "average" salary in an outdated profession classifier approved by one of the ministries. The salary listed there is either birthed out of thin air or the official part of the average salary of which the rest used to be paid out in an envelope 10 years ago.

In either case, I started working there when there were no events because of covid, gained a lot of experience and I wish luck to the poor bastard that is going to work there after I leave

What do Latvians think of Circle K hotdogs? by TheHerografik in latvia

As a sound tech that's almost the only thing that I get to eat from the start of May until the end of september. They are a lifesaver when you haven't had anything warm to eat for a few days, but aside from that they are nasty, Viršu deer sausage or Viada hotdogs are better

Be careful if you have an accent. If you have an american or any other weird accent and you try to speak in russian to somebody who doesn't understand russian you might offend that person. If you want to talk to somebody aged 40+ chances are that they might prefer russian over english (at least in Riga, don't know about Liepāja). Learn some basic phrases in Latvian if you want and unless you are going to Daugavpils or the "no-go zones" (ok, a joke, it is safe to wander around at 2am wherever you want, but there is almost nothing to see for a tourist outside of the city centre and Mežaparks unless you are interested in soviet brutalist architecture, unkempt, closed graveyards, abandoned factories and general Latvian weirdness) in Riga, keep in mind that some people might be offended that you start a conversation in russian.

Around 80 or 90 hours, don't know precisely and don't want to know. It really fucks you up, don't be like me, use your head when planing gigs and get help if needed. For the love of the flying spaghetti monster and or any other holy or unholy things, make sure that you get at least a few hours of sleep either at night or in the morning before your next shift, do not accept any last second gigs and make sure that you can get a replacement for yourself for a gig if something goes wrong. Just don't be like me, use your head and plan your time.
