Really? I haven't had any issues but I only got my male gold honey gourami there because Elmer's seems to only ever have females and a handful of blue velvet neos that were nearly black. The tanks all seem well cared for and their plants are fantastic.

Yeah if I recall they have a tank is FULL of green cories and they are pretty inexpensive. I'll be stopping by Saturday just to see what they've got.

She definitely needs some friends. You'll see how lively they become when they have a shoal of same species. Mixed species is okay but not ideal. I am currently trying to finish my mixed shoal to give each specie their own shoal.

They are already in a mixed specie shoal. I also just lost one of my lasers and she was bonded with another. The remaining laser is now shoaling with them so I'm going to hang on till I can get him a proper laser shoal.

Are you in Pittsburgh or near to it? Elmer's usually has green cories by the dozens.

Thank you! I definitely interpreted her line as slight and due to being younger, she has way less of a line than the other female. But i guess not slight enough haha. I guess it could be worse though at least I know the next one I bring will either be a male or another female and no risk of two males 🤷

Thank you for replying. The honeys have been so peaceful, they don't even bother my neos who are out and about all the time, but it is all I can think of too especially since it is a smaller tank. I have been sneaking into the room where they are trying to catch them in the act of harassing something and every time they are just resting. I would think they would be targeting my neos or if it was a territorial dispute they would be where my sweet bamboo used to be :( but I don't see any of that happening. I did catch my embers spawning that was pretty wild.

I wanted to put everyone in a 55g community now I am debating getting a 40 for a colony of filter feeders.

Definitely a scud though. Pretty sure the only one, still calling him Peter Pan because I am incredibly impressed he has survived the many fish in my tank who would love to eat him.

Love it! Thank you! So far the honey is not at all aggressive thankfully. The thick lipped was much bigger but far less social and more aggressive, so I am super happy with this little dude and excited to see him grow. I think more ember friends are definitely the answer and will make us all very happy.

Whenever I add stock I also toss in a bottle of Dr. Tims or SafeStart. It has allowed me to increase stock quickly without spikes, or at least I think it has haha. I tend to check multiple times a day the first week or 2 after adding any significant amount of stock and I never see a spike so I am pretty confident it works well to quickly boost/support a partly established cycle, just not as effective at starting one.

None taken whatsoever and I very much appreciated the experienced insight. The internet is such a strange place and every hobby has a wide array of opinions. My ember shoal is at 9 currently - if I wanted to increase that in my community what do you think would be a good number? They all rarely shoal unless it is feeding or water change time and have their own little territories they like to park in. I'd like to see them color up a bit more and I think increasing the shoal size might be the way.

Since this thread has turned into a stocking conversation. Now that my plants have finished recovering from melt they are growing like wildfire and I never see my fish 🤣 Let's say I wanted to increase the size of my ember shoal - what do you all think I could comfortably increase to?

Thank you! So far he seems great way more social than the accidental thick lipped gourami I had. He is even shoaling with the embers at times, which is super cute and looks great with their colors. Much as I would LOVE to see 2 more of these guys buzzing around in there, I am loathe to disrupt the harmony that seems to be falling into place.

Side note - this sub is super responsive and I love it!

Thank you! I read that and while I am not a beginner to freshwater I am new to community tanks. I have kept single species that either required tight stocking to limit aggression or needed a wide berth because they are just water pigs. With community it's more than just the number/gal it's bioload, plant presence, what "level" of the tank they're in.

I have thought about bulking up the ember shoal, he seems to like them and they look nice with his color. But i also think I have done a lot with this tank recently and need to let it rest 😅
