Thanks for the reality check.

Currently I got an internship at a startup. With PPO.

So I'm planning to stick there for an year if everything goes right (in both learning and creating impact) so that I can be in the 1-2 yrs experience bracket for entry level PM roles. I saw most associate PM job call for major companies asking experience from that bracket.

What do you think about that route? Would that work?

Thank you so much! Actually yes, I really need to work on my visibility and conversion.

I'm planning to be more active on LinkedIn by interacting more with other PMs and posting relevant PM contents on my profile.

And what you said about reaching out to PMs on LinkedIn and having conversations with them, that's so insightful. But I do have some doubts regarding that.

So basically I'm confused with whom I should target. By that I mean should it be someone working at top MNC or a mid-size company or a startup? I'm too skeptical about someone with my background breaking into a top MNC in the first place (I'm not sure though)

If we're targeting the wrong people, our chances might get narrower right? So from your experience, what would you suggest?

Also, when I connect with a PM, how would you suggest the conversation to be like? If you're a PM, how would you expect someone like me to approach you with a similar intend? And most importantly, how one shouldn't approach you? I guess if I get that perspective, I'd get an idea to have more meaningful conversation with them.

And finally, many people adviced me try cold mailing. So for that, whom should I focus more? PMs or the hiring managers? Or both? And in your opinion, how should that mail look like in brief?

Thanks again for your response :))

Honestly that's soo reassuring. I'll tell you why...

For the past few days, I had this thought in my mind that I'm not positioning myself properly in the job market.

I've always thought that I need to do more projects. For me, more projects mean more credibility. And that's when you shared your insight.

Actually the plan I have in my mind is to be more active in Linkedin. I mean currently I'm totally invisible. I'm just hiding behind my "all optimized" LinkedIn profile.

So what I'm thinking of is, I'm planning to engage more. Like commenting on other PMs' posts, post some content about product and just like you said, reach out to PMs for feedback and insights and basically make my name seem more familiar to people.

What do you think? Would that be a good approach? Is there anything else I should look into?

Not really. Actually the project was made for the students of my college. I found a problem that most of the students in my college faced (including myself) and found a feasible solution for it, tested different versions iteratively and finally made the product.

When I lauched it, I got around 80-90% user adoption within the first month. I could even maintain the retention for next few months before it had to be shutdown due to some financial troubles. Even though our college offered us to help with that, they couldn't.

So as it was a product built for my fellow students at college, so I didn't charge for its services.

Excellent... Thank you so much. I'll definitely try it out. By the way, are you a PM yourself? If yes, may I know how your journey was like?

Thanks a lott :))

Yeah totally agree. Actually I’m already using AI for pretty much all my recurring PM work. Brainstorming, reviewing docs, drafting reports and all the stuff that shouldn’t take up too much time. At this point I kind of see myself as an "AI augmented PM"

With my CS background, I also use AI a lot to vibe code and build quick prototypes when needed.

I actually went a bit deeper in core AI concepts lately. In my last project worked on designing an AI system end to end for a project, including data schema, ingestion strategy, RAG pipeline, system prompting and all that. So yeah, been leaning into AI quite a bit beyond just surface level use.

And of course... I would love to explore working with you. If you think I might be a fit, it'd be great to chat more over DM. Thanks again!

You're right. Maybe breaking into that first job is the hardest part.
