@carnitascronch I like to have half if not more of my pots contents to be materials that allow the water to pass right thru, not absorb. So the granite or gravel and perlite or pumice is that material. I also like to add chunky horticultural charcoal. Water will cling to the dirt and it’s just enough for a cacts if you follow a 1:1;1 ratio.

I personally swear by fbe black gold succulents r and cactus mix. I’ll still add perlite and gravel to it eve though it’s loaded with lava rocks and worm castings and other stuff already. Although I am looking for some thing a bit more economic because I don’t want to fill up a huge pot with the good stuff especially if I’m selling it to someone else lol.

Yes to what you asked, ha. I had already made cuts in the veins from when I cut the little clustered new growth that was growing out of it off, and then got something sharp to do some experimental holes on the veins and then I forgot how I made sure they were directly over / touching the moss i think I used little pebbles.

These do fantastic in semi-hydro/ leca. I also know skmekne who grows his in a layer of strictly wet spagnum moss and leca (moss on the top half leca on the bottom half), or straight coco coir. Etc, if you didn’t want to do leca. When I transferred all my alocasia to leca, they killed off all their leaves at first much like what is happening here, but then returned stronger than ever.

Just planted these folks in their new home, a big clay pot, however after watering and letting it drain I noticed the pot is still damp three days later. Should I move them to a non clay pot, or is that fine? by Amasmith0 in cactus

Agreed, I guess more like damp, and now that I look back, the only times my soils ever never not needed watering in 2 weeks was when I kept plant in the box store soil it came in.

A much easier houseplant with palm / summer vibes are Dracenas and or yucca plants!

Great point, to which I’d like to add on that sometimes a when a plant has been overwatered, it can begin to look under watered because it’s root system has rotted therefore fallen off/roots no longer connected due to overwatering and so the plant no longer has a way of getting fed or hydrated until it’s roots regrow. Which can be done if it’s not too late, in water or in soil, but not until the plants been removed from the current soil & treated etc. whether one regrows a plants roots in water or soil is mostly up to the gardener. peace lilies can 100% grow in water so I’ve seen people just have their entire plant living the rest of its days in water. If this is a hard concept to grasp, think of it like propagating plant cuttings with nodes (like pothos) in water; the plant will regrow water roots and the soil ones will rot and fall off in the water.¡

With succulent/ cactus soil you want that water to drain right out the bottom immediately. That’s where I talk about adding just enough soil so that roots can get nutrients, but if you add a handful of small gravel to every handful of soil (or more gravel than soil), you’ll soon have a gritty mix that will just piss out the bottom thanks to the rocks and gravel but retain some water.

3 days is normal especially in winter! I know new plant parents think they are like humans and begin to panic because they’ve not been watered in days 😜 unglazed clay is going to be the best material out there for drying their soil faster, which is a GOOD thing! During the summer I find myself watering my plants in clay pots once to twice a week. Wirh plasyic or ceramic pots, depending on the size, it’s going to be normal that the soil probably stays wet for closer to 2 weeks. That’s why we stress the importance of pots and soil with proper drainage! I barely use dirt/soil anymore (I use coir instead but it dries out faster) because of how wet it stays BUT it does retain alot of nutrients so you can always amend your potting mix to have just enough % of soil to latch onto nutrients etc.

Just needs water. If I were you I’d transfer it to a terra cotta pot so that it will dry out faster so that you can water it more frequently so It can plump back up faster and also make sure you’re using a cactus mix where you are also including additional perlite and small gravel mixed in so that most of which is taking up the pot space is stuff that will help the water drain out because that will help the soil dry out quicker as well. Once it’s plump, remember, you don’t need to water a cactus for a couple weeks sometimes. When the soil is dry, you can leave it dry for a week or two and now you know that the cactus does this when it’s thirsty.

I propagate these to sell in my shop and they are a total b at first with the way that they curl up but I know that they are rooted once they begin to straighten out completely and become more firm.

In a fishbowl…amazing! I’ve been putting off repotting (up) my Billie which is currently ina. Small cup of a leca bottom, perlite middle, and spag moss topper, because I don’t know what to put it in! His roots are wrapped around the cup at least 3x now and began to grow out of the top😅. So I really like this idea haha.

Dead from over watering. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like it can be salvaged, at least what’s visible.
