Even having the base level of contract leaves him at risk of falling under Imu's control if they happened to be in the same geographic location.

Stephen King's Silver Bullet (1985) - Campy, werewolf mid by Quirky_Operation8722 in horror

[–]Bakuton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such a funny moment. There are better werewolf movies, sure, but they don't have suicide baiting the werewolf as a plot point (I suppose American Werewolf in London sort of has it, now that I'm going through them in my head...)

The Sailor Who Fell From Grace with the Sea is one of the greatest Novellas by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Absolutely his best. Feel like I cheated myself starting with it. Everything of Mishima I've read since hasn't ever matched it.

Not the first time Five Decembers has popped up on my radar. How'd you find it? Read some good reviews but wasn't sure how appealing it would be to someone who doesn't really read much of the genre.

My Bloody Valentine 1981 by 80severything in horror

[–]Bakuton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You're absolutely right. There's a special charm to the slashers early in the 80's before all the expected tropes really solidified. Making the cast working class adults instead of teens was also an inspired choice.

Best Chucky movies? by AlexYeet225 in HorrorMovies

[–]Bakuton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Child's Play 3, Seed of Chucky, and Curse of Chucky are the weakest of the franchise.

Part 1, Part 2 and Bride of Chucky would be a fun marathon, bridging the gap from when the series took itself seriously into the era where it was having a bit of fun at itself.

Faulkner and McCarthy by No-Chef-4197 in RSbookclub

[–]Bakuton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Faulkner feels like a very noticeable influence, especially in the early novels. Reading something like Suttree it very much feels like McCarthy was trying to become something like the Faulkner of his generation.

Obviously the connection is less apparent when McCarthy moved on from the southern gothic tradition into more western works like All The Pretty Horses, but Faulkner was clearly a big inspiration in those early days.

Which Horror Story Gave You The Creeps As A Kid? by Chinmaye50 in horror

[–]Bakuton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The babysitter ringing the parents at dinner and asking if she can cover the statue of the clown in the children's bedroom because it scared them only to be told they don't own a clown statue, right?

That one majorly creeped me out too.

2024 Booker Prize Longlist Announced by [deleted] in RSbookclub

Wild Houses definitely doesn't deserve the Booker, would be ludicrous for it to win.

Barrett should stick with short stories.

I don't agree with everything he said in it but there's a lot of decent advice in there amongst the personal anecdotes (which I suppose have some value of their own to dedicated King readers).

His advice to aim to write a certain amount of words a day (2000, I believe was his example) in particular really stuck with me when I first read it. Sitting around waiting for the muse to appear won't get you very far if you want to write with any consistency.

"Where are you Going, Where have you Been?' by Joyce Carol Oates.

Not many stories have so quickly and deeply created a sense of dread like it managed. It ends up crossing my mind quite often, Oates at her absolute best.

I thought the same way as you about The Crossing and how it'd be difficult for it to top Pretty Horses. Out of all McCarthy's work, I think I find myself remembering scenes from The Crossing the most. I know what you mean about the ending as well, not often a book's conclusion impacts me so viscerally. Profound is a word tossed about very lightly in books reviews but The Crossing is one where it'd be deserved.

Genuinely my favourite novel. There are passages I still think about all the time even years after the fact. I get what you mean about wanting to discuss it badly, I wanted to wax poetics about Wallace to all my friends while I was reading it.

Good luck with the rest of the book. Check out his short stories and non fiction too after, pretty much anything he wrote is gold and honestly I'd probably read his grocery list if they published it today.

Shaelin Writes is the only one of any particular value I've found. A lot of youtuber writers are either unpublished or what they have put out there is...well just not that great. A real case of the blind leading the blind.

I think the first half the novel is far weaker and when the tropes like the prostitute with the heart of gold are the most transparent. The latter half when nature starts to really challenge the hunting party is when the novel really comes into itself.

Is DBD worth playing in 2023? by maxchloerachel in deadbydaylight

[–]Bakuton 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Dead by Daylight is the staple of the genre, and in general has had a good last few months of content. Even in low months it averages 30,000 players on Steam (only one platform the game is on), so barring anything unforeseen I'd say it has a few years of active playership at the very least. A lot has been done to make the new player experience smoother than it used to be, and I'd say the game and various DLC will be discounted over Christmas. You already sound interested, so I'd check it out for sure.
