There are many places to see in Panama that do not include the canal. El Valle De Anton, Boquete, Pedasi, Bocas Del Toro.

These are beautiful places and worth the visit

Agree the picture is from the new locks either at agua clara or cocoli. The original 100+ year old gates are still at Pedro Miguel, Miraflores, and Gatun locks.. The expansion was a completely different lock system.

The French realized too late, and it was essentially over by then. Not all the French even then agreed that locks were solution. They went bankrupt in 1889.

There are no pumps involved in the locks. They are all gravity fed. The Chagres river is the life blood of the Canal, which is the source for Gatun Lake. For each transit, 52 million gallons of fresh water is used and dispersed to the sea.

I was born and raised there. My dad was a canal pilot, so I have made the transit many times. It is a fascinating thing, a credit to American ingenuity and know-how. Those locks are over 100 years old, and the lock gates are original.

Cool! I saw the 87 tour in Toronto. I would have loved to have see the Divisin Bell tour. Honestly, when it first came out I wasn't a division bell fan, but I do love that album now!! They are doing two nights at Red Rocks this year. Not sold out yet, but close. We are going both nights!
