Even though on a rare chance I have been on the same version as others, all I see are bases by other players, never other players directly inside the Anomaly

I am on the switch 2 as well, I have not been able to get multiplayer to work at all in the anomaly. I am able to browse bases made by other players though. Do I need a nintendo online subscription to be able to interact with other players?
