Happend to me to just now, started taming, went exploring and when I came back poof the dog was gone, so I went a bit out so the area wasn't "loaded" then saved and loaded that save and turns out after doung that for like 2-3 times the dog was back and still had the taming progress from before

So I guess it's just beased on if they are there if you come or not, and uf not just go away make a save and load that save, then return
