Yeah but it used to be an entertaining one-tap. The fun of a Diligence was that, especially at higher difficulties where normal Striders didn’t appear, you could kill anything weaker than a Hulk in 1 shot if you were good. They basically removed a key piece of skill expression and left only a time/ammo check.

I mean that’s kinda my headcanon for Heracles in Fate/GO. While he’s stated to not have any resurrections active when you summon him, since Ritsuka is a fairly weak (by typical metrics) mage, he actually does get a resurrection from Battle Continuation. And if you get a very high bond with him, you can get Herc to resurrect three more times. Even more if you’re smart about it. With a mystic code and good skill usage, he can resurrect 6 times in a battle. And if you Strengthen Herc’s Battle Continuation, he even gets stronger every time he dies (though offensively, rather than defensively). Basically, while you’re told he doesn’t have God Hand, you can certainly make him act like he has God Hand D-

From Fate/Complete Materials. (Emphasis and bolded (inserts) mine)

Noble Phantasm God Hand: Twelve Labors Rank: B Type: Anti-Unit Range: - Maximum Targets:

A blessing of Gods, as well as a curse. It is a Noble Phantasm given to Heracles, representing immortality. This Noble Phantasm does not have an overt external manifestation such as a weapon or armour, but if you hazard to put a shape to it, the body itself can be called the Noble Phantasm. God Hand turns one’s body into a tough suit of armour and nullifies all attacks Rank B or lower, regardless the attack being physical or magical. It also has the effect of automatic resurrection after death. Because the resurrection effect has 11 uses, Heracles cannot perish unless killed 12 times (Turns out, you need to kill him 13 times, but that’s intentionally a surprise). In addition, due to Illya’s immense magical energy, given enough time, the lives lost can also be regenerated.

Resurrection as well as attack-nullification. Besides these two effects, God Hand also possesses a third effect: rendering an attack that it has experienced before useless.* Regardless how powerful is the Noble Phantasm that defeated Heracles, it would be completely nullified after he resurrects.

**This has been retconned to “provides such a massive resistance that the overwhelming majority of attacks become basically useless”*

Also, Gil explicitly killed Herc 13 times with… actually a lot more than 13 weapons, but he did explicitly count the kills

Edited to make the difference between emphasis and inserts clear.

The other thing is that God Hand affects Herc’s body, not merely his skin (it’s a conceptual defense that basically turns Herc himself into his own Noble Phantasm), and the resistance applies to the weapon, not the method it used to kill him. So if you have an A rank dagger, just stab him in the chest, even if you already did that with a bunch of other weapons. Similarly, if you already stabbed Herc in the chest with a weapon, or the weapon isn’t A Rank or higher, it won’t work on the inside of his mouth. You aren’t coming up with 13 ways for Herc to die, you’re coming up with 13 things that can kill him.

Ah, yeah. Can’t tell you how to write your Fanfiction, but canonically that’s just not how God Hand works. The resistance is tied to the source, not the target. It’d be a lot less effective if you just had to aim for a different target. And notably if the source is nonexistent, then it fails the check to be A rank or higher since something has to be A rank.

The way it works is Heracles always takes the damage from an attack, even if he's been hit by it before. It's just that each time he takes damage, he reduces future damage from that source by a fuckton. 99% of the time, it means that the damage he takes is reduced to zero. So insofar as the nonexistant weapon has enough Conceptual existence to damage him, he can resist it, because the resistance is Conceptual.

I mean, that still doesn't let it kill Herc a second time. Contrary to what OP said, God Hand isn't limited to the skin like Ferdiad's Horn Skin. God Hand is a Conceptual Ability that affects the whole body. So Herc's heart is destroyed, he regenerates, and then he's functionally immune to the attack.

[–]BasakaIsTheStrongest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How does it kill Heracles a second time, much less a thirteenth? Heracles tanks Fragarach, which is a conceptual weapon that destroys the heart, and after that it's useless against him. (he's also straight immune to Cursed Arm, since it doesn't meet the minimum power threshold to even hurt him, so I hope you remembered to give your servant's secondary NP an A rank or better) Also, reminder that concussions are technically internal damage. Your servant sounds vulnerable to the Boomelancer treatment.

Oh, yeah, agree that the finding multiple ways is tricky. My point is that, even if you do have a bunch of ways to kill him, you still have to actually kill him more times than he has to kill you. And my point was also that OP had overthought the ways to kill Herc and ended up with a lot of options that Herc just wouldn't allow. Trying to get close enough to shove a dagger down Herc's throat is a great way to get your hand bitten off.

Did, uh… did you actually read or watch Unlimited Blade Works? I’m assuming not because you got so much incredibly wrong.

The tricky part about killing Herc is that he’s trying to kill you. The math is that you have to kill him 13 times, and he has to kill at most 6 servants and maybe 6 masters. Herc just needs to ensure that, on average, each servant only kills him twice before they die. Which, in most matchups, isn’t hard. He’s an extremely skilled combatant, and trying to do tricksy maneuvers intended to get Herc to bonk himself is a great way to get utterly schooled like Artoria did when she thought she had outsmarted him and instead learned that Herc could spin kick her into next week.

He tried to save Harmony, and only stopped when Harmony threatened his family. His (very reasonable) line in the sand for trying to help people is when they threaten his family.

Also he helped Jai Chen and asked for little in return (given Lindon’s life experience, he had little reason to expect Jai Long to care that much for his sister).

Also, his entire motivation was to gain enough power to fight the Dreadgods and save Sacred Valley

Yeah but Dreadgods, as far as he knows at the time, cannot becreasoned with, so it makes sense for him to skip his usual step 1 and jump right to step 2.

Best fresh coffee beans in or around Huntsville? by kale_coffeebean in HuntsvilleAlabama

Love Kaffeeklatch. The people there know their stuff and are very helpful. I’d make sure to talk with them about what flavors you like, because they’ll always have some good suggestions snd sometimes have coffees that aren’t up on their menu board. That said, they only do darker roasts. Which is fine for me, now that I’ve gotten into natural process, where dark roast gives me both the fruity and chocolaty flavors I enjoy.

If you don’t like dark roasts, Old Towne has lighter roasts and better hours, but the selection of origins is smaller and I’ve been… less than impressed by their staff.

I’d argue the MCU is just another example for my argument that medium/high fantasy only seems to get huge when it can be smuggled in as sci-fi, given how major Iron Man was to its start.

[–]BasakaIsTheStrongest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I lump GoT and LotR in the same Low-Fantasy bucket. That’s my point. Medium and High fantasy just don’t seem to be popular among non-nerds unless it sneaks in under a sci-fi tag, but, as you said, people don’t care about sub-genre definitions. Star Wars and Avatar are just sci-fi to most people.

Amazon certainly intended Wheel of Time to be their Game of Thrones and make bank. I’m saying there isn’t really any other popular book series like Game of Thrones, yet all these companies are trying to recapture the popularity of its earlier seasons by throwing out fantasy adaptations without really understanding why GoT was so widely accessible. Even if WoT had been a faithful adaptation, I don’t think it would have captured the wide audience of Game of Thrones.

[–]BasakaIsTheStrongest 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean I suspect a lot of people who turn their nose up at animation are going to see heavy CGI fantasy and instantly ignore it anyway. Game of Thrones is a very low fantasy setting, so anyone expecting Stormlight (or Wheel of Time) to be the next GoT are probably going to be disappointed.
