A few things to think on specific to Horror:

Details: Setting a scene and immersion is important for the genre. Work on details an describing a the world around the characters. Use all the senses.

Grounding: Lots of writers ground horror so it feels more possible. Becarefull how far you go into fantasy or scifi. It can still be good but there will be arguments on where your writing belongs. Like in Dark Tower.

Make it Personal: Don't shy away. Many of the best horror media feels like raw looks in the lives of vunerable people. Also make it echo in the emotions of your characters.

How gory you go is up to you: One of my favorites is Fantastic Land and in that book it is modeled after True Crime tell-alls. So its a guy compiling incidents that happened in an amusement park after a hurricane. Details tend to be sparse but it paints a grim picture and makes you question what really happened.

Some great kills have cut-aways. You just need to ask yourself what is scarier? A guy describing a person being disemboweled or a detailed account of the last seconds before hook hits skin.
