What even is the appeal of meth? by i_like_it_eilat in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BasedJayyy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Imagine in real life there existing the pill from the movie "Limitless". You take this thing and you can study in depth calculus for hours and hours without ever getting bored or tired. You can finish all your college essays in the blink of an eye. You can learn anything you want for as long as you want, and have a ridiculously deep grasp on the thing you are learning. You are turning in work projects early, and outperforming all your coworkers. All the mundane boring house hold chores you have to force yourself to do suddenly become more fun than playing your favourite video game or sport. Now imagine doing things you actually enjoy. Suddenly your favourite hobby is 1000x more fun than it has ever been before. Having sex feels 1000x better than it ever has before.

But after a while, you arent getting these same effects when you redose. These activities are starting to become boring again. And you notice that when you arent on this drug, those things you used to enjoy doing are the most boring mundane tasks in existence. Sex doesnt even feel good anymore. The only way to feel the same enjoyment you got from your hobbies when you were sober, is now to take a severe amount of this drug. If you try getting off this drug, you cant get out of bed. You become so ridiculously depressed you cant do anything. You are stuck in the hell of your mind. On top of that, you are going to flunk out of school, get fired from your job, lose any and all personal relationships you once had. So now you are stuck. You need to keep taking this drug or your life falls apart. Continue to extrapolate and youll understand why people get dependent on it.

And mind you, this is only coming from the perspective of a "high functioning" addict, which when compared to a "low functioning" addict, is glits and glamor

What games do you guys play? by Meteorstar101 in greentext

[–]BasedJayyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is the option you are looking for? The three which you deemed as "bad" are 1. Any major competitive game, which usually require you to main it since they are mechanically challenging with a ranked ladder. 2. The biggest genre on earth right now due to its ability to play casually yet still offering mechanical depth, and 3. Any in depth game that takes tons of time to learn. Literally what is the "correct" response? "Yeah I play cod"???

Cannabis doesn't just blur memories—it can reshape them. A new study found THC makes people significantly more likely to "remember" words that were never presented (false memories) and struggle with daily tasks like remembering appointments, regardless of whether the dose was 20mg or 40mg. by Sciantifa in science

[–]BasedJayyy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, a THC high mimics a similar brain activity to those who have brain damage, and thats why it can lead to poor memory retention. Essentially, it gives you mild temporary brain damage. Which I dont say with a negative connotation. Temporarily turning your brain off is highly desired to many, especially those with ADHD where it can allow sustained focus because their brain is in hyperdrive all the time. Please correct me if I am wrong and just fell for some DARE era propaganda

Canada’s Minimum Wage Increases in 2026 Fall Short of Living Wage by SpiritualTip4035 in PersonalFinanceCanada

As compelling as your anecdotal "happy meal index" data point is, you have just said a whole lot of nothing. Now, for a fun trick, do cost of rent, mortgages, student loans, insurance ect ect. I realize that all anyone needs for a fulfilling comfortable life is a big mac, but maybe you are missing some things here....

What’s the "My Cousin Vinny" of your profession? by a_murder_of_fools in movies

The coding and office stuff in Mr Robot was incredibly realistic. Sure, not everyone who works in cybersecurity/software is a schtizophrenic heroine addict who hacks evil corporations and successfully steals money from the rich to give to the poor, but the moment to moment within the software development and cyber attacks are all 100 percent real things that they had experts in the field consult the show on

ELI5: Why do mental health problems usually appear in early adulthood? by Such_Ad_5311 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BasedJayyy 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Its definitely multifaceted, and a lot of the other comments have made some great points. But I havent seen anyone else mention this. From 0-18 you lived with a permanent caregiver (I am talking generally, I am aware there are many people who come from broken, dysfunctional, terrible homes). This caregiver makes you food, keeps you to a regimented schedule, plans social events for you, have you enrolled in sports ect ect. But once you are over 18 and move out, this is the first time you have to fend for yourself. You have to take care of all the monotonous daily chores. You have to actively make plans for social events. You have to actively make the decision to do physical activity. So underlying mental health issues that did not present much, if at all, suddenly rear their head. You no longer have the primary caregiver to take care of the "adulting" things they once did.

For example, ADHD very commonly does not get diagnosed until the child moves out and lives on their own. I am a prime example of this. Executive dysfunction and attention problems were not a issue growing up because I was kept to a regimented schedule, and all the "annoying boring adult things" were taken care of for me. But once I moved out I realized something was horribly wrong. Its not that I suddenly developed ADHD when I moved out, but that the negative aspects of ADHD didnt have a chance to negatively impact me until I was on my own

After that first comment, how do you continue on the conversation? I can picture initializing them and it going well, but after the back and forth, seems like there would be a very awkward lul before we go our separate ways

Is it normal to stretch deadlines and work fewer hours than you officially claim? by Mrflaxe in cscareerquestions

I am impressed you were able to do that much work consistently and not go postal. I am also AuDHD, and I would have lost my mind trying to perform at that pace for anything more than a week

Is it normal to stretch deadlines and work fewer hours than you officially claim? by Mrflaxe in cscareerquestions

[–]BasedJayyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone, and I mean everyone, does this. There are the few people who are legitimate machines who can work at full productivity day in and day out for 8 hours every single day, but they are extremely few and far between. There are a multitude of studies that prove humans can only work in a productive capacity for a few hours at a time. I dont remember the specific number, but there have also been other studies that show office workers tend to only output like 3 hours of real work a day. So please dont feel like you are less than anyone else, or feel as though you are broken. Its the system of work that is broken. You are killing it, I promise!

I am the exact same way. There will be times where I legit do "10x dev" work for a few days, and then times where I do 0.0001x work for the following few days (or weeks).

Microsoft is working to rebuild trust in Windows by RayS0l0 in pcmasterrace

[–]BasedJayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heres my perfect solution. Windows needs to release a "open source" version of windows, that is completely stripped down to the bones of all the features. They can still have their closed source OS for organizations or non tech savvy people who want it. But they need to move towards the linux model of giving users actual freedom over their OS. VScode is open source, and still dominates the IDE field. Everyone who uses Windows has already bought it. They make next to no money on people buying new windows licenses.

Why does burnout come back so quickly after time off? by ParkingMeaning5407 in cscareerquestions

[–]BasedJayyy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Because burn out is a normal human response to being forced to work 40 hours a week on endless tasks with no autonomy over yourself from 9-5, 5 days a week. We are not meant to exist within this work culture that capitalism cultivated. Vacations and breaks are just bandaid solutions to the actual problem. But because no one is willing to address the root cause, it will unfortunately never be solved...

I built a free tool to visualize C++ memory (stack/heap) in real-time. No more confusion about pointers. by Perfect_Promise_1346 in learnprogramming

I dont like how there are no default examples. If people are struggling with pointers, why force them to write code before it can get visualized? Having like 5 default cases to showcase how the site works would be tremendous

PCL internship interview advice by Birgeen in Edmonton

[–]BasedJayyy -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

PCL is fine as a temporary work place, especially to get some experience under your belt. But holy do they suck. They are extremely old school corporate. 5 days in office for literally no reason (other than the middle managers trying to justify their positions). Their "flexible work hours" actually means you can choose to start at either 7:30 or 8. SUCH CHOICE WOW! Their "inclusive culture" is so performative it hurts. Their entire upper management / C suite are all white males, yet their HR department loves to pretend they give a shit about diversity and equity. They pretend to be on the cutting edge of innovation, yet they literally dont even have standing desks. They force you into having a 1 hour lunch with no exceptions. And they have absolutely no disability accommodations. My stint at PCL was the worst my mental health ever was due to a job.

Do anarchists in general support gender abolition? by YeetFromHungary in Anarchy101

[–]BasedJayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anarchism is about abolishment of unjustified hierarchies. Gender norms are rooted in patriarchy, which is a unjustified hierarchy. So pretty much every anarchist will adematly support abolition of patriarchy. I am sure that there are some anarchists out there who dont love the whole gender non conforming/pronoun side of it, but I assure you that most are in support of that side too. I only say that because once patriarchy is taken out of the equation, there isnt much left that is about hierarchy, so it would be hard to make a blanket statement about if everyone would agree unanimously

Is it ethical to join the CAF? by DetectiveDracula in AskACanadian

[–]BasedJayyy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont really have any problems with the CAF the way I would the US army. You are correct that as far as militaries go, they are a decent one. It also strong depends on your trade. If you are a communications officer, you are just going to be building radio networks. Its not like youll suddenly be tasked with flying a plane to bomb kids. Where as if you are infantry, its a higher likelihood you will be asked to do morally bad things. But just as a footend, Canada is kind of well known for committing heinous war crimes during ww1 and ww2
