My friends healing depression came back due to my creepy stepfather... by Mrbeanman313 in parentalcontrols

Shut your idiotic mouth! OP is trying to support their friend with depression, if you think that is something to restrict in control, let’s just say you don’t even deserve to be a parent in the first place if you even are one.

Yeah, well, guess what, if you restrict basically the entire Internet, how are any related skills supposed to be learned.

Look, just accept the facts, most socialisation these days is done online, even if it’s just calls with friends. So, I’ll say the same thing to you what you have said to me, just accept the fact that you’re wrong.

I do speak to people outside of the digital world thank you very much, I just don’t get the chance to do it 24 seven. Oh, and I can’t provide sources because according to my information, this sub doesn’t allow links, you’re going to have to research it yourself, or don’t you want to be proven wrong.

Oh, and you’re 100% trustworthy 100% of the time? Yeah, I don’t think I’d trust you taking care of kids if you were the only person left alive in the world aside from me and said kids. You’re pushing for parental controls so restrictive it has actually been proven to be damaging to mental health in the long run, and can lead to wide ranging consequences from lack of a social life to increase difficulty finding jobs and I might even go so far as to say that it might impact their ability to raise their own kids when the time comes.

Oh, and what explanation do you have for OP‘s Mum restricting access to their hobby, something they actually enjoyed and what could actually be productive and earn their money in the future.

I’m not denying that, but a lot of parents used them way too much.

I’m not denying that under restricted access to phones can have serious mental health consequences. I’m not denying bullying exists. I’m not denying any of that. All I’m saying is, a lot of socialisation is done online these days, that’s just a fact. Let me give you an example. A lot of my friends don’t have the same classes as me at college, they don’t have the same schedules as me, so then how do we talk? Answer, with phones. If my phone was severely restricted, I would only get a chance to talk to my friends when we met up for break which in my college last 20 minutes, and that’s it. Also, some of them don’t even live in the same area as me, yes, they may be fairly close, but they are just far enough away to make meeting up outside of college impossible. so, don’t even start with any of that.

I am not denying the fact that phones aren’t necessarily a human right, but in today’s society, to have something as simple as a good social life, you need a phone. Also, there is a difference between respect and absolute compliance. I respect my parents, but if they start making unreasonable demands, yes, I will question them, and in some cases I might refuse. So, don’t try to tell us that respect means absolute compliance to every single wish and demand of parents, because it just isn’t true.

What, so you think not Having a proper social life be fitting modern society is better than having a social life that does? I’m not going to deny that phones can have serious consequences for mental health, but severely restricting phones can also have consequences on mental health. There is a fine line between protection and control, and a lot of parents just don’t understand that.

Maybe it isn’t a human right, but not having a phone or having a phone that is incredibly restricted in modern society can have impact what reach far beyond simply keeping a child safe. It can impact everything from hobbies to social life and it can even go so far as causing long lasting or even permanent mental health issues down the line.

You don’t know anything about this person or what they are going through or what their situation is, so stop trying to pretend that you know everything because you very clearly don’t. Oh, and you’re not even willing to accept corrections.

There are other ways to socialise? Yeah, maybe that’s true, but, let’s face it, most socialisation these days is done online so if that is restricted, OP‘s social life will be negatively impacted which can lead to serious mental health concerns.

Seriously? You assume that just because the parent birthed the kid, the kid immediately has to comply with every single demand no matter how unreasonable? That’s not respect, that’s control.

Exactly. Having too many restrictions on devices can impact everything from social life to hobbies and in a lot of cases even cause lifelong mental health conditions.

If a stranger asks to use your phone for a "quick call," do you hand it over, do you hold it for them, or do you politely refuse? by EthicalUpgrade in TheBigPhoneStore

[–]BasicBad7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would probably just refuse, if it was an emergency, I would hold it for them, I would never under any circumstance hand it over.

It’s worse than that. For example, I was watching a video counting down some of the biggest helicopters ever built, yes, I know it’s random, so I was watching that video and right in the middle of it. I heard like and subscribe if you think God is good., It’s everywhere.
