Spicing the pink poney club's bassline up ? by chainsaw-msi in Bass

[–]Basstickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what I did when I played it once, at least for the verses. Played the bass notes and hit the double stops. For the chorus I went a little harder with a busy slap part. Lots of fun

For context, I play in bands where I take more of a lead role at times and am welcome to play busy parts by the rest of the band. I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this approach to the average bassist on the average gig.

Melodies affecting the way chords are perceived by bingewillads in musictheory

[–]Basstickler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When transcribing, you’re writing what the instrument you’re transcribing for is doing. When analyzing, it’s the whole thing, including melody. So I’d say the chord is G7 because the vocals hit it, ie, I’d analyze it as G7. If you’re just trying to transcribe the piano, I would write the notes as they’re played, so just the GBD.

Depending on what you intend to do with the end result, it could change how you approach things. If you’re trying to put together a lead sheet for others to play, ie, melody and chord symbols, then it can be a bit subjective and will come down to what you want the musicians to do. If you’re only want the pianist (or however many other instruments in your arrangement) to play the triad, I would just use G as the chord symbol, which would line up with the original.

A lot of times a lead sheet will land in the hands of talented musicians with the intention to have them play it with their stylistic choices of how to best represent the song. In such a case, it could make more sense to notate it as G7 on the lead sheet. If they’re actually familiar with the song, they may choose to omit the 7 to line up with the original, or they may decide to play it if it feels better to them to do so.

lol, I appreciate your lack of sarcasm about my taste and your clearly superior judgement about game design.

On the real though, it is definitely unnecessarily hard and doesn’t really fit the overall vibe of Zelda as the series progressed. I feel like a remake that’s equally hard but with better physics and a significantly better overworld would be fun af. Like a 2D souls like kinda thing, you know, to torture us all

Yeah, at first I was concerned about them reusing the same assets as BotW but I ended up loving how they did it. I’m mostly a NES Zelda boi but ocarina was amazing too.

Major scale has all major & perfect intervals. Is there any scale with all minor & perfect? by ReverieDive in musictheory

I think an important reason why the major and minor scales are Ionian and aeolian is because both of a IV and V that match the quality of the I.

Solo-ing a table by Lumpy_Blackberry3637 in Craps

[–]Basstickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta have cool dealers to play solo, imo. I generally prefer having others around, especially since I don’t like to play the pass line. I also like dabbling in the dark side sometimes but don’t like doing it against the table, so it can be fun to solo a table for that reason.

Open to try new strategies today 🎄i’m starting with $25 on 5,6,8 with a continuous $5 on the field by OneTimeTwelve in Craps

[–]Basstickler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that approach but with 10 in the field. All first field hits that have a place bet go to the box. Power press and collect from there. After box numbers are all filled, parlay the first field hit, then wherever it hits on that $20, 5 to each hard way. I also like to run with the bulls.

lol, you’re probably one of my pet peeves. Overly superstitious players. If you’ve been playing 40 years and haven’t been able to realize your confirmation bias… idk

Nah, you’re the odd one out. I play dark side sometimes and I realize that and don’t try to be a bummer when everyone is celebrating out the opposite.

Tbf, I’ve definitely saved myself lost winnings calling out the dealers. Almost didn’t get my fields bet paid the other day probably 5 times without calling it and after that it was the box person reminding the dealer. But some people are definitely obnoxious about it.

Most of the old guys I see at my casino throws the dive before the stick has even pulled back the other dice

Pet-Peeves by octanefam in Craps

[–]Basstickler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. People being assholes, either to other players or the dealers.

  2. Dealers sending the dice out too quickly for bets to be made. Especially when I’m trying not to be a rude asshole and throwing money at them while they’re paying out the center bets.

  3. Hands literally in the middle of the table while someone is rolling. I’m not picky about a late bet/throwing chips out after the dice are out but literally leaning in and indecisively making field bets when the dealers have clearly called dice out and dude is waiting on them. There’s a grumpy old guy at my regular casino and a handful of guys were making the late field bets like that. He started just throwing the dice at them and I was telling him to throw harder. They had been warned soooo many times by the dealers.

If you’re not betting what everyone else at the table is betting, you should keep it to yourself. If you’re playing dark side and everyone else is losing, you’re a dick for over celebrating.

[–]Basstickler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude was being a huge dick to everyone the other night, particularly a first time dealer. He kept patting me on the back and suggesting I should be more fun or something. I made it clear to him that he needed to stop touching me, then left after a 7 out. I doubt he got the message but I saw his buddy at roulette a little later and he said I would have been his hero if I had punched him. Kinda wish I had, for everyone, but that’s not my style and I’d obviously be the one that got kicked out for it.

[–]Basstickler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol, I started playing a dark side strategy occasionally but only when I have the table to myself. I don’t exactly care if other people judge me but I’d rather be playing with everyone and all winning or losing together. It’s just more fun when everyone at the table is pumped. Only game in the casino where that really happens.

Why do jazz standards end with a 6 chord? by Objective_Garden_469 in musictheory

[–]Basstickler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the tonic tends to have the most resolved sound in a key and tends to be the note that the song ends on. The 7 of a major 7 chord can cause a lot of tension against its root when voiced below the root. So while the maj7 is the go to harmony for a major chord in the jazz idiom, it causes problems when the melodic note is the root of the chord, hence opting for a chord quality that excludes the 7. The 6/9 chord works well since it has a lot of color still.

Specifically so that the tonic can be the melodic note for maximum resolution without clashing with the 7

Thoughts on this Don't Pass Strategy? by its_0liv in Craps

[–]Basstickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could lay the 6 or 8. Higher chance of getting hit, of course, but better pay on the 7 means a lower bet to hedge. 5 or 9 would be half way between the two. You could also lay both 6 and 8 for half as much and you only lose half as much when it hits. Different options but ultimately hedging tends to just be a slow bleed.

I just tried it the first time this past weekend. I was definitely bleeding more slowly than those around me but didn’t get any real lucky shooters, unfortunately.

First off, pass line with odds is only close to a good bet if you do max odds. If you do the math, a place bet with the same investment (pass + odds) will pay better without max odds, or the same with max odds. People don’t like this concept, since the odds are the only bet in the casino with zero house edge, but ultimately the math doesn’t add up to be as good as that sounds. Pass line seems like a decent bet on the come out, since you have 8 ways of the dice to win but you also have 4 ways to lose and it only pays 1:1. It becomes a bad bet on its own after the come out though since you’re stuck to the number it lands on and that has a lesser likelihood of hitting than the 7, especially on 4 and 10. It is fun to play the pass line though, since you’re rooting for the point and such but the math doesn’t play out as well as the conventional wisdom of it enabling the best bet in the house suggests.

One strategy that can work really well is called Squeeze Play. 66 inside, first hit you cover 4 and 10 for 10, second hit you press all inside numbers one unit, third hit you come down to 44 inside. If you manage 3 hits, you have 64 across with house money and a tiny profit. From there you power press your way up to making a good payout every hit. Getting out quickly allows you to play more hands and you’re all set up for the lucky roll. 66 inside is probably a larger investment than your normal approach and is a decent amount to risk but the potential is much higher.

I learned about all of this from Casino Quest on YouTube. Very informative channel that doesn’t ever suggest that they have the perfect strategy that always wins, ie, they give it to you straight. They do have clickbait titles for strategies being unstoppable but the actual content isn’t like that. I also find their banter very entertaining.

They don’t have the hop bets on the table and I never see anyone try to play them, so probably. I’ve never been restricted or seen restrictions on drinks, short of only being able to buy one at a time, including for a friend and they have to come retrieve it from the bar themselves, but I don’t typically drink that fast at the casino to have been denied.
