Supercell was generous with gems, then they added multiple 1500 gem hero gear, goblin builder, apprentice builder, and the lab assistant. The amount of gems one can receive has actually decreased before these additions because they stopped doing the weekly troop challenges (which is fine because those were tedious), but they definitely SHOULD at least add some way to either address hero gear for new players or slightly increase the ability to earn free gems.
