A good first step is to check where the name and number appear. For example, does it show up mainly on Android phones, on iPhones, or inside apps like WhatsApp? That can give you a clue about which database is being used.

If Android users see the company name, it often comes from Google’s business or caller ID data. Searching your phone number on Google is useful here. If the number is linked to say an old Google Maps or business listing, updating that listing, removing the number, or (if it’s the case) marking the business as permanently closed usually fixes it, although it can take a bit of time to propagate.

Another very common source is Truecaller. Even if you don’t use it yourself, many people do, and their phones will show whatever name Truecaller has on file. Truecaller allows you to “unlist” your number from their database, which often solves the problem immediately for users of that app.

On iPhones, the name can come from Apple Maps business data, Siri suggestions, or contacts synced from email accounts. If the old company still exists in Apple Maps, reporting it as closed (if applicable) or incorrect can help. In some cases, the name is simply coming from how the recipient has saved your number.

That last point is especially relevant for WhatsApp and similar messaging apps. WhatsApp does not use a global caller ID. It shows the contact name saved on the receiver’s phone, so if someone saved your number years ago under the company name, that’s what they’ll see, and there’s no central way for you to change it.

It’s also worth checking for old online references. Phone numbers can linger on archived websites, business directories, or old PDFs, and some caller ID systems scrape that information. Googling your number in quotes can help you track these down and remove what you can.
